Do I need a linen hood? Do I need a slightly post-apocalyptic hood? Do I have a post-apocalyptic costume to wear it with?
no.
Have I been influenced again by influencers I follow on youtube? Maybe.
Have I cut the fabric for *two* hoods this morning, and handsewn half of the first? Maaaaaaaybe.

Dear linuxverse,
I'm trying to use the debian images from cloud.debian.org/images/cloud/ to setup a new virtual machine with libvirt, but it's not working and I don't understand what's wrong.
I have downloaded debian-12-genericcloud-amd64.qcow2
and then I try to run:
virt-install --name testvm --import --os-variant debian12 --disk debian-12-genericcloud-amd64.qcow2 --network network=glcomobr --cloud-init
(where the glcomobr is a network that I have defined locally and is currently up)
I get something like
Starting install...
Password for first root login is: TctupICHoRI9GIAL
Installation will continue in 10 seconds (press Enter to skip)...
the system boots, I see some messages from cloud-init starting with
Cloud-init v. 22.4.2 running 'init' at Wed, 21 A
ug 2024 15:11:56 +0000. Up 14.12 seconds
, and including ci-info: no authorized SSH keys fingerprints found for user debian.
but at the end I can't login with the generated password.Does anybody know what I'm doing wrong and can point me in the direction of the right documentation to follow?

@Ilkka Tengvall I've tried both, in different configurations, also trying to add an ssh pubkey in multiple ways.
Nothing worked, but I've found it was because of bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrep…
This morning I made a quick attempt using a different image and it's better

Probably relevant life and body positivity tip from a sewist, pattern drafter and seamstress:
The clothes are the problem. Please try to remember that you are not the wrong shape, size or dimensions. If the shirt doesn't button closed the shirt is too narrow, you're not too wide. If the dress sags at the back it's the dress pattern, not your ass. Absolutely nobody makes clothes that are Actually Your Size unless you custom order or make them yourself. Even then fitting is a skill and an art!
You're not the problem, the clothes are.

oh yes, I bought two pairs of that kind recently. they were so comfy in the shop.
in real life gravity and weight made the wiring (boning?) fold in half (and stabbing my ribs) while also folding the cup into a weird shape as a side effect.
they just used some lightweight plastic strip as boning...

@sewing has anyone ever made the 1720s wrapping gown from Janet Arnold's Patterns of Fashion 1? I've been working on a muslin today and I ~think~ I'm figuring it out, but I'd love to see a real life iteration. Or a blog post

Thanks for the advice!
I find the shoulder lines to be the hardest to gauge in historical patterns, probably because I personally tend to be much wider in the back/bigger in the arms, and fitting is still a skill I'm working on.
The original gown can be sort-of seen here: collectionssearchtwmuseums.org…
Where it looks far smaller than the drawings in Patterns of Fashion; it's also discussed in this excellent blog post:
thefashionarchaeologist.com/re…
But I'd love to see more people making her work, from any of the books - they're so interesting.

and I've finished the #AugustaStays! Except for the fact that I had misplaced 3 out of the 4 laces I had luceted, and could not try it.
This morning I've found two of the laces, and there is still a bit of string in the place of the last lace that has been misplaced, so I will probably be able to try it on?
I won't be able to take pictures for a while, it's still quite a busy time.

TIL that the TRIXIG set of precision screwdriver set (ikea.com/it/it/p/trixig-set-ca… ) uses standard 4 mm bits, and it even has a mostly different selection than the minnow set from iFixit ( eustore.ifixit.com/products/mi… ) I already had.
Did we need another precision screwdriver set? Are we going to use any of those bits except for the usual Philips and a couple of Torx?

Let me reveal unto you this dearly learnt textiles and laundry wisdom!
For years I have, without issue, cleaned up this and that but often cat piss with regular generic quality cotton kitchen towels and cotton hand towels. Wring them in cold water, rinse them with vinegar, wash normally in hot water with detergent for whites... They're fine.
But a viscose towel used for the same? Reeks! Even after multiple washes smells exactly like it did prior to them! Do not clean cat piss with viscose!

@rag. Gustavino Bevilacqua per carità, il biglietto serve anche a disincentivare i viaggi non necessari, che è sacrosanto, visto che le linee ferroviarie attorno a milano sono già a più che capienza.

Why do I love #TerryPrachett
Here's why
Ever since I first picked up one of his books in the very early 90's as a young man. I thought I was going to be reading a funny fantasy novel.
Every time I was wrong.
What I read was a lesson in morality and ethics, a novel about giving a voice to the voiceless. Novels that tackled racism, gender politics, fascism and everything else that's used as a weapon to treat people poorly for being different to what they think is 'normal'.
He taught me well.

Tantissimi piccoli o pochi grandi? A voi la scelta.🙏

Contrary to my habits of somebody who works from home, I've just spent last week eating lunch every day from a bento box.

Hey fellow #Linux users, despite the #CrowdStrike problem only affecting #Windows, this is not a windows problem.
This is an "automatic update that got forced onto everyone with insufficient testing while also having way too many permissions" problem.

In all seriousness tho -
#hugops to the poor bastards who have to clean this up and especially to the poor bastard who now has the epic 'time I brought down prod' story - no matter who contributed the bug, it was a systemic failure of crowdstrike's QA process that allowed this to escape into the wider internet; the aim is not to rely on people not to make mistakes, but to build systems in such a fashion that mistakes can be caught and corrected before they become an issue for others.
Individual heroism never makes up for systemic failures, y'know?

Today's big IT security catastrophe seems to be all about one proprietary security product for Windows, by one big vendor. I don't think it's appropriate for software freedom folks to crow too hard about this: open source software sometimes also has catastrophic security problems. I would draw the line between a diverse and a homogeneous ecosystem. When almost everyone in the world uses the same software, a problem in that will affect almost everyone.
But open source is still the moral choice.

I ran an old kernel for a couple of months (it was a personal machine behind a firewall), then debugged it and submitted a patch, but a fix was already in the pipeline. It was the distro's vendor's own changes which crashed on certain chipsets.
I think they could've used some testing.

> But also distributions shipping signed bootloaders should make sure that they're updating those and updating the security generation to match, because otherwise they're shipping a vector that can be used to attack other operating systems and that's kind of a violation of the social contract around all of this.
I was getting deeply frustrated about the reporting on this which verged on "Microsoft pushing update to gatekeep Linux for no reason at all". The articles even went so far as to lightly hint that there is some security issue involved but completely missed the fact that distributions could quite easily have avoided this mess by keeping their bootloaders up to date (seriously, why isn't *this* the headline: multiple Linux distributions with 2yo security issue in the bootloader refuse to boot after signature update?). I am a bit shocked that this doesn't apply only to older and niche distros but quite recent and supported ones.
If Mozilla finally revokes a certificate we cheer on them, even if this breaks some websites. And we blame the websites that they didn't switch to a good CA in time.
And yes, MS should've done more testing too. But that stuff has been said now thousands of times and I'm just super annoyed at the reporting.

in reply to lj·rk • • •> If Mozilla finally revokes a certificate we cheer on them, even if this breaks some websites.
I don't think the comparison is fair, though... a broken SSL certificate can be worked around easily if you really need to access that website; breaking the boot bricks the entire machine (there's no "continue anyway" button), and is an order of magnitude more complex to fix for the user. Also, an update of an OS breaking the other is not something you expect.

Two questions:
1) Is it fixable?
2) If it is fixable, who has to fix it? Theoretically, it should be the Linux distros that haven't updated their grub code. But now the Linux partition is no longer bootable, so they can't. Is the Windows partition bootable? Can Microsoft fix it? Or do people have to go through hoops by preparing a special flash stick or CD, booting from it, and having something there fix the problem?
