Dear linuxverse,

I'm trying to use the debian images from cloud.debian.org/images/cloud/ to setup a new virtual machine with libvirt, but it's not working and I don't understand what's wrong.

I have downloaded debian-12-genericcloud-amd64.qcow2 and then I try to run:

virt-install --name testvm --import --os-variant debian12 --disk debian-12-genericcloud-amd64.qcow2 --network network=glcomobr --cloud-init

(where the glcomobr is a network that I have defined locally and is currently up)

I get something like

Starting install...
Password for first root login is: TctupICHoRI9GIAL
Installation will continue in 10 seconds (press Enter to skip)...

the system boots, I see some messages from cloud-init starting with

Cloud-init v. 22.4.2 running 'init' at Wed, 21 A
ug 2024 15:11:56 +0000. Up 14.12 seconds
, and including ci-info: no authorized SSH keys fingerprints found for user debian.but at the end I can't login with the generated password.

Does anybody know what I'm doing wrong and can point me in the direction of the right documentation to follow?

Probably relevant life and body positivity tip from a sewist, pattern drafter and seamstress:
The clothes are the problem. Please try to remember that you are not the wrong shape, size or dimensions. If the shirt doesn't button closed the shirt is too narrow, you're not too wide. If the dress sags at the back it's the dress pattern, not your ass. Absolutely nobody makes clothes that are Actually Your Size unless you custom order or make them yourself. Even then fitting is a skill and an art!

You're not the problem, the clothes are.

in reply to Sini Tuulia

oh yes, I bought two pairs of that kind recently. they were so comfy in the shop.
in real life gravity and weight made the wiring (boning?) fold in half (and stabbing my ribs) while also folding the cup into a weird shape as a side effect.

they just used some lightweight plastic strip as boning...

I work on a spandex sports bra design right now...

in reply to Sibylle

@sibylle I've used synthetic whalebone in mine, the same that gets used in historical costuming corsets. (It's a carefully engineered slightly more expensive plastic.) It's not right at the side of bust either, more directly under the armpit and to the side? I've not had it warp even in long line bras that need some four to five hooks to close. If you can easily source synthetic whalebone and switch to that, you might be able to use them again!

Thanks for the advice!
I find the shoulder lines to be the hardest to gauge in historical patterns, probably because I personally tend to be much wider in the back/bigger in the arms, and fitting is still a skill I'm working on.

The original gown can be sort-of seen here: collectionssearchtwmuseums.org…
Where it looks far smaller than the drawings in Patterns of Fashion; it's also discussed in this excellent blog post:

But I'd love to see more people making her work, from any of the books - they're so interesting.

consumerism (the excuse is that it's repair tools)

TIL that the TRIXIG set of precision screwdriver set (ikea.com/it/it/p/trixig-set-ca… ) uses standard 4 mm bits, and it even has a mostly different selection than the minnow set from iFixit ( eustore.ifixit.com/products/mi… ) I already had.

TFW you wake up in the early morning wondering what is the total mass the buildings of a typical Tuscany walled town (say, Lucca), and whether 5 and a half million kg is a small but measurable percent of it or a rounding error.

@Walter Tross già, ma dei 90000 credo che una parte significativa abiti fuori dalle mura, nel resto del comune, e che dentro alle mura ci siano più edifici non residenziali.

For years I have, without issue, cleaned up this and that but often cat piss with regular generic quality cotton kitchen towels and cotton hand towels. Wring them in cold water, rinse them with vinegar, wash normally in hot water with detergent for whites... They're fine.

But a viscose towel used for the same? Reeks! Even after multiple washes smells exactly like it did prior to them! Do not clean cat piss with viscose!

Here's why

Ever since I first picked up one of his books in the very early 90's as a young man. I thought I was going to be reading a funny fantasy novel.

Every time I was wrong.

What I read was a lesson in morality and ethics, a novel about giving a voice to the voiceless. Novels that tackled racism, gender politics, fascism and everything else that's used as a weapon to treat people poorly for being different to what they think is 'normal'.

He taught me well.

Tantissimi piccoli o pochi grandi? A voi la scelta.🙏

these have always been designed as an opt-in mechanism. they allow the reader to know that a post exists without reading it.

Your followers may actually want to see your opinions on current events!! But they may not want to see the opinions of people everyone their followers boost. Or not see them today. 🧵

Sono compresi (ma non fotografati) anche i pesi di metallo da inserire alla base delle tende.

"Linux would have prevented this!" literally true because my former colleague KP Singh wrote a kernel security module that lets EDR implementations load ebpf into the kernel to monitor and act on security hooks and Crowdstrike now uses that rather than requiring its own kernel module that would otherwise absolutely have allowed this to happen, so everyone please say thank you to him
in reply to Matthew Garrett

I find these recent takes by the Linux “Master Race” / Community extremely toxic and damaging to the community. Open Source Software is not the answer and has shared it’s own number of recent controversies (ie XC, OpenSSL) but these seem to be forgotten about pretty quickly - just because it’s open doesn’t mean it’s secure. As a software developer and user of MacOS, Windows 11 and Debian 12, I find all 3 OS’s have their place, purpose and reason to co-exist
in reply to Simon

@Simbo2k6 I don't think open source solves this problem, but this *specific* problem is absolutely solved by Linux and I am not going to generalise beyond that
in reply to Matthew Garrett

seeing as a similar api is absolutely available within the closed source OS that suffered this unfortunate issue, open source has no real advantage here. Crowdstrike had reportedly threatened an anti-trust lawsuit as a result of being forced to use it. There are also reports of Debian suffering a similar issue as a result of Crowdstrike’s poor code review / qa practices. Parading Open Source around as the saviour is just farcical as the issue is outside Microsoft
in reply to Simon

@Simbo2k6
Tell that to ESR. He states this right. Non libre = recipe
for a disaster.
in reply to Matthew Garrett

@Simbo2k6

The msg was not for you, but I have to reckon than ESR was
right on FLOSS and how it avoided most potential issues better
than the current issue with Clowdstrike.
I don't agree on the 90% of its daily life reasoning, of course.
I don't like weapon lickers...

in reply to Matthew Garrett

Well Linux is more secure, I'll say, it depends. Generally speaking, its really well secured for servers(desktop is an other story and depend on so many factors), but Linux have its part of critical problem, just thinking about last CVE about ssh....

In all seriousness tho -

#hugops to the poor bastards who have to clean this up and especially to the poor bastard who now has the epic 'time I brought down prod' story - no matter who contributed the bug, it was a systemic failure of crowdstrike's QA process that allowed this to escape into the wider internet; the aim is not to rely on people not to make mistakes, but to build systems in such a fashion that mistakes can be caught and corrected before they become an issue for others.

Individual heroism never makes up for systemic failures, y'know?

Today's big IT security catastrophe seems to be all about one proprietary security product for Windows, by one big vendor. I don't think it's appropriate for software freedom folks to crow too hard about this: open source software sometimes also has catastrophic security problems. I would draw the line between a diverse and a homogeneous ecosystem. When almost everyone in the world uses the same software, a problem in that will affect almost everyone.

But open source is still the moral choice.

@martinvermeer Yeah, given the number of times my Linux machine has refused to boot properly after an update, I’m not exactly crowing about this. 😂 #chroot

@josh @martinvermeer The funniest time was when my distro's updated kernel oopsed at boot.

I ran an old kernel for a couple of months (it was a personal machine behind a firewall), then debugged it and submitted a patch, but a fix was already in the pipeline. It was the distro's vendor's own changes which crashed on certain chipsets.

I think they could've used some testing.

@pare @martinvermeer Ugh. That sounds like a serious pain. I run Manjaro these days, which has a reputation for cavalier quality control, but my own experience with it has been pretty solid (so far, lol).

@josh @pare @martinvermeer I've bot had trouble with #Debian unattended upgrades this millennium. But if I managed really important systems or large numbers of them, I'd set up a more careful approach.

progressive rollouts are also an important part of any organization's update strategy, which is orthogonal to both closed/open and homogenous/heterogenous

so, apparently it was a thing already in the 9th century?

“Aside from Christian literature and Biblical commentary, Sedulius held a passion for alcoholic beverages, especially beer. Sedulius liked the drink so much that he even wrote a lament to a small drought titled Nunc Viridant Segetes, or Drought in Spring. The poem ends with the line "Muse, ask our good father bishop: when do we drink again?"”

(why did I end up on the wikipedia page of a monk from the 9th century?)

I have an illustrated version of this poem, which always moves me when I read it to my daughter:
