Hey #devs and people who know about phone apps and #opensource development.

I asked recently the developers of the app #Aloha, a supposedly #privacy -conscious #browser, why they weren't open source. (Because I thought it would make sense to be able to review the code to make sure that there isn't anything dodgy in there.)

The replied the following:
Thanks for the message. Open source only make sense when you can build and install straight away to your device, but with mobile devices it is not very easy to do. You have to have a lot of skills and be a part of developer program. Plus it requires back end and server infrastructure. Having code open sourced doesn’t necessarily means the production builds available in stores have been built unmodified, so it just don’t make sense to go open source in our case.
Does that make sense to you at all? It feels to me that they are dismissing the whole idea because of one small thing. "Showing the code doesn't make sense because the app stores add some code".... ???

News around Liberapay

Here is a summary of the April and May months most important news about #Liberapay.

Status of Liberapay's polyglotism: the website is fully available in 14 languages! The new ones are Romanian and Malay. You can contribute on hosted Weblate and support the team financially through its Liberapay account.

Addons.mozilla.org now supports Liberapay as a donation platform that add-on developers can link to.

The well-known free software image editor GIMP now has its own team account on Liberapay. This means that you can donate to the project as a whole, then its members will decide how to split the money, whereas previously you had to figure out by yourself who the contributors are and how much to donate to each one.

You can now attach a longer and nicer public name to your Liberapay account. See here.

A symbolic donation challenge

Since you are reading this post I guess you are directly interested in the improvement of Diaspora*. As you probably know Diaspora* couldn't improve without the hard and enthusiastic work of the developers. That is why

I challenge you to give at least a symbolic €0.01/week amount to the Diaspora* developers

€0.01/week is not much. It just €0.52/year so probably you can easily afford that. I guess you throw away much more to buy some fancy junk you don't even need at all ;-)

Isn't €0.01/week too little?

Yes, it is symbolic, but it is much more than nothing.

Also it can be a lot if most of us are willing to join (especially if some of us are willing to give a bit more).

For example, imagine if just 1% of the currently registered users of the federation have been taking this challenge. That would mean about €65/week for the developers. Just 15% of the users that were active in the past 6 month could give €75/week this way. 70% of the monthly active users could give €105/week for the developers by this "symbolic" donation.

Of course, you are free and encouraged to give more. (I also do so.)

How to participate?
- Create an account at https://liberapay.com.
- Add some money to your wallet.
- Start directly donating the developers.

Please, also encourage others to join this cause by spreading the message and voting on the poll below.

Thanks for your feedback on the previous post regarding app download source.
The results are obvious - 100% of votes for F-Droid.
Well, we expected a high percentage for F-Droid, but this is very clear.

Immagine/foto

Based on the results:

* We won't publish releases of dandelion* signed by our key anymore
* We will wait for F-Droid to build dandelion* and attach the app signed by them to our GitHub page
* This way there will be just one signing key used - for you users - this means you can update your dandelion* installation regardless if downloaded from us, or from F-Droid store
* If you download an *.apk telling a wrong key error at installation, you can be sure it's not done by F-Droid - so don't install
* In the last versions, there was an "secondlion*" apk attached on our GitHub Release page. This one has a different package id and can be installed beside dandelion*. In future updates this won't serve the only purpose - to just allow a second account - anymore. secondlion* will be our dandelion*-fresh/beta version from now on, signed by us, which can be installed alongside dandelion*.
* This will affect all future releases - we won't update or change previous releases
* It's up to you - you can go for the F-Droid release, the faster published secondlion* - or install both

Does this mean the project is dead?
Absolutely not.

What if my current installation came from the GitHub page?
Just uninstall the app, and install the latest build from F-Droid:
https://f-droid.org/repo/com.github.dfa.diaspora_android_12.apk

Who has access to future used signing keys

* dandelion*: Just F-Droid has access to the key
* secondlion*: Maintainers (@gsantner, @vanitasvitae)

Does anyone have experience teaching Linux to an 11 year old? I've been using Linux for over a decade but I am a terrible teacher when it comes to computing (I get way too frustrated when people don't know what I'm talking about). If you have any advice or links on the topic, it would be very much appreciated.

Open Knowledge

---

* Humanity must work together to solve the problems we face on a global scale.

* No single entity, government, company, or organization can solely achieve this.

* All entities must willingly combine forces, skills, abilities, influences, communications, and connections in order to achieve this.

* Open Access needs to be granted to knowledge, research, and discoveries.

* Censorship of any kind will only inhibit humanity's ability to work together.

---

Description

Throughout history, there has been a battle between those who wish to control information, and those who wish to set it free. Looking past profit and greed, there is a reasonable mentality for supporting the control of information. Humans can not always work for free, they require food, water, shelter and other essentials for survival. In order to continue quality of work, these needs must be met.

However, the money is not always reaching those who make the discoveries, and these are the people who work the hardest. This must change.

Intellectual Property is a misnomer, no single entity owns their intellect. One builds knowledge on the shoulders of others. While it is true that one deserves credit for their work, the act of disabling others to share this work is an injustice to humanity, and renders the work as useless.

A solution to this problem is more important than any other.

Without knowledge, education, and the ability to access it: Humans will not be able to make informed decisions, and will not be able to solve other complex problem they face. Until this problem is solved, humanity will continue to shuffle their feet slowly toward solutions, and when the day come that Earth is in mortal peril, Earth's population might not be ready to act.

Notes

This document will be ever-changing and is only the beginning of a greater work. I encourage all who are interested to contribute, communicate, and discuss by any means necessary.

If anybody actually took the time to read all the way to this point, and is reading this... Please spam me with messages about anything. related or unrelated.

_Another note: This is a first draft, needs some edits, and is / will be a "living document" of sorts._

_^ Visualization of the Internet... image is somewhat related, since the Internet allows for the capability to share information in creative ways_

Why we don't publish at the Play Store

We got some requests recently, asking, why we do not publish #dandelion at the #GooglePlay. So here are our main reasons, why we don't plan to uploadthe app there currently.

First of all, we do not comply with Googles terms of service. Having to pay ~25€ to Google who did not write the app and does not respect your freedom nor your privacy on its platforms (Youtube, GMail...) just doesn't feel right. We believe, that our userbase is well aware of the privacy concerns that come with using Google's Services, so many diaspora* users actually get their apps through F-Droid (which is great). Second, if a user that does not know about F-Droid yet wants to use dandelion* and searches for it, they'll hopefully find out about the F-Droid project and may get in touch with free software that way. So by not publishing to Google Play, we hope to get more people to understand, use and appreciate free and open source software.

If you find dandelion* on the Play Store, please be aware, that you likely just found a version built by someone else. We can not guarantee that such a version has not been tampered with in terms of #malware, so we highly discourage you to use it. It should be clear, that we'll never charge you any money for using, downloading, sharing or modifying the app. Note also, that we won't support those versions.

If you want to dontate to the project to support the developers, and keep them motivated, please feel free to contact us :D As always, you can help us by submitting bug reports, code and/or translations on github and crowdin.
PS: We maintainers (@gsantner and @vanitasvitae) will soon have more time again to actively work on the app. The last weeks we were distracted with educational work, so here is some background information:

@gsantner was working on another FLOSS app called Froody, which lets you share (naturally growing) food and other things with others. He hopes to enable people to live a more sustainable life. The main idea is to share to and help other people by e.g. sharing pears, which would rot anyway if unused.Everything is built with international use in mind. The app is available at https://github.com/froodyapp/froody-android, and is currently available in #English, #German and #Japanese. Also translatable on Crowdin. He also writes his bachlor thesis about Open Source and Android, which will be completed in summer and likely to be released in an appropiate free license.

@vanitasvitae is writing his bachelor thesis about an #OMEMO module for #Smack, a #XMPP library used by many free messengers like #Jitsi or #Kontalk.
He hopes to enable those messengers to #encrypt your communication end-to-end using the OMEMO protocol introduced by #conversations.
He'll also attend #FOSDEM in #brussels by the way, so if you are there you might meet him and chat a little ;)

Sharing welcome!
