Today there is what I believe is the pride parade closest to where I live, so of course while I'm ready to jump on a bookcase to hide from the noise I'm also doing studies in different techniques to paint rainbows
(no, it's just a coincidence, but I just noticed it and it felt appropriate)
(this is still work in progress, and most of the point was trying out techniques and materials)

I feel like the Internet Archive debate hits differently in countries like the US and UK, and countries like Hungary.
I do tons of academic research. The volumes needed to keep up with academia often run $100+ each. And unless I order them from overseas (delivery $30-50 each) there is no access to them. Several don't have a copy *on the entire continent* (few Hungarian libraries do international loan but it takes large amounts of money and months.)
I imagine many countries are even worse off.

Things I will never stop doing: translating Elfenbeinschwarz as Elvish bones black, and expect it to be extracted from real bones from real elves.
Now, I do worry a bit about the fact that elves are supposed to be immortal unless killed, so extracting said bones would probably require violent death, but they are going to the Halls of Mandos and then reincarnate in a new body, so they are going to eventually be ok? maybe?
ok, maybe it's better if they extract the pigment from random inanimate carbon sources :D

Una cosa che mi rifiuto di smettere di fare: tradurre Elfenbeinschwarz come “nero di ossa di elfo”, e aspettarmi che sia ottenuto da vere ossa di vero elfo.
Certo, un po' mi preoccupa il fatto che gli elfi sono immortali a meno che vengano uccisi, e quindi per estrarre le ossa gli si deve probabilmente causare una morte violenta, ma tanto poi vanno nelle Sale di Mandos e poi si reincarnano in un nuovo corpo, quindi alla fin fine va tutto bene, giusto? forse?
ok, forse è meglio se continuano ad estrarlo da fonti di carbonio inanimate a caso :D

@Egli/Lui ok, ma avorio in tedesco si dice Elfenbein, non Elfenknochen, sia nel contesto del nero di avorio che nel senso generale del materiale.
Lo dice wiktionary (en.wiktionary.org/wiki/ivory#T…), lo dice la pagina di wikipedia in tedesco (de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elfenbei…) e lo dice il catalogo Schmincke e le etichette degli altri prodotti di belle arti di marca tedesca (meno buona della Schminche :D) che ho in casa.
L'etimologia della parola Elfenbein non mi risulta abbia niente a che fare con gli elfi, e usa il termine Bein nel vecchio senso di ossa, che comunque non è accurato (visto che le zanne sono più denti che ossa), ma è un'etimologia, non è una classificazione scientifica del materiale, e comunque nel contesto ossa ha molto più senso di gamba per descrivere una zanna.
Si, ma quando dici Elfenbein per indicare l'avorio , la parola Elfen non deriva da Elfo, e' una storpiatura di Elefant....
Proviamo a riassumere. Nella parola composta, l'oggetto principale sta alla fine.
ElfenbeinSchwarz ha "Nero" come concetto principale, e ElfenBein come attributo. Stai dicendo "nero come l'avorio". Che non e' nero.
Se lo vuoi fantasy, la testa della gente la devi ficcare nel fantasy, perche' il tedesco e' tremendamente sensibile al contesto. Quindi, invece di tuffarti nella difficile arte di coniare parole composte, "Schwarz wie die Beine eines Elfen".
Per cui, usare knocken rimane il mio consiglio.
@Egli/Lui allora, la parola composta non è mia, la parola composta è tedesca, già esistente ed usata in germania e negli altri paesi di lingua tedesca: Elfenbeinschwarz, ovvero nero d'avorio, che è anche il nome italiano dello stesso colore, ovvero “pigmento nero ottenuto carbonizzando avorio” (ovviamente non lo producono più in quel modo, adesso lo ottengono bruciando scarti di animali non in via d'estinzione).
non posso chiamare quel colore con un altro nome in tedesco, né usando knocken, né usando una perifrasi, il nome di quel colore è quello, Elfenbeinschwarz, punto.
quello di cui parlavo nel post originale è la mia traduzione mentale della parola, in *altre* lingue rispetto al tedesco.

Dear paintingverse,
when I decided I wanted to try #painting with #acrylics I bought a few 20 ml tubes, because I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a new hobby, even if the price per liter was significantly higher, and I expected to only paint on A6 / postcard size, like I do with watercolours. They weren't metal tubes like I was used to in the 1800s :D but transparent plastic.
And then I got into myself some ideas on a bigger scale, and now I'm buying *huge*¹ 120 ml tubes. However I've found that the smaller tubes are quite convenient to use when painting on small scale on a cramped desktop, which is something I'm not planning to stop doing.
Does anybody have any experience with refilling smaller plastic paint tubes from of bigger ones? Is it even doable? If it is, I'd expect it's better to use the same brand/line/colour of paint, and possibly to avoid a complete refill, and only doing limited amounts at a time, to prevent wastage in case the biocides fail at their work and there is spoilage.
Also, I'm thinking I could either try to refill from the opening, or cut the seal at the bottom and easily refill from there, but then I'd need a solution to close it back in a way that doesn't let air in.
I guess that the alternative would be to buy empty metal tubes of the kind used by people who make their own paints, but that's too easy, right?

Quando ho deciso di provare a #dipingere con gli #acrilici ho comprato dei tubetti da 20 ml, perché non volevo spendere uno sproposito su un nuovo hobby (anche se il prezzo al litro era significativamente più alto), e mi aspettavo di dipingere in formato A6/cartolina, come faccio con gli acquerelli. Non erano i tubetti di metallo a cui ero abituata nell'ottocento, ma tubetti di plastica trasparente.
E poi mi sono fatta venire idee su scala più ampia, e adesso sto comprando dei tubetti *enormi*¹ da 120 ml. Ma mi sono anche accorta che i tubetti da 20 ml sono decisamente comodi quando si dipinge in piccolo formato su una scrivania incasinata, che è qualcosa che intendo continuare a fare.
Qualcuno ha esperienza nel riempire dei tubetti di plastica piccoli a partire da tubetti più grandi? È fattibile? Se lo è, mi aspetto che sia meglio usare la stessa marca/linea/colore, e probabilmente meglio evitare di riempire completamente, ma aggiungere quantità limitate per volta, in modo da evitare sprechi nel caso il biocida fallisca e qualcosa vada male.
Come idea immagino che le opzioni siano riempire dall'apertura normale, oppure tagliare il sigillo sul retro e riempire facilmente, ma a quel punto c'è bisogno di qualcosa per chiudere bene in modo che non entri l'aria.
Immagino che l'alternativa sia comprare i tubetti di metallo vuoti che vendono per chi si fa da solo i colori, ma quella è un'opzione troppo semplice, giusto?

Io uso gli acrilici in barattolo, però credo che con una siringa grossa sia possibile fare il travaso (ma te ne serve una per colore).
P.S.: a inizio carriera Picasso usava pittura per muri, che costava meno.
Guarda un modo per risparmiare materiale (non necessariamente soldi) è prendere i pigmenti e il medium acrilico (indicativamente Liquetex) così ti fai i colori come ti servono nelle quantità necessarie.
Di travasare tubi grandi in tubi piccoli, non l'ho mai fatto in tutti i miei anni di Liceo Artistico e Accademia di Belle Arti...
Anzi non ci ho mai pensato fino ad oggi... e ne è passata parecchia di acqua sotto ai ponti.. 👴

I don't speak Sindarin, but I found myself with an urgent need to know how one would say something like “Say meow and enter”, and some googling¹ and reading of web pages lead me to think it could be something like “Pedo muio a minno”, would it be correct?
Or maybe something like “Say, cat, and enter” would be better, and that, if I'm not mistaken, would be “Pedo muig a minno”?
If I understand correctly they are both neosindarin words, which makes me question Tolkien's priorities, but isn't necessarily an issue for my needs.
Did I get something horribly wrong? Would something else be better?

Hey there. My Sindarin knowledge is quite crusty by now but I'll throw in my two cents anyway.
I haven't been able to find a word for "meow" and I doubt it exists. The Sindarin for "cat" is indeed "muig", apparently. So "Pedo muig a minno" would seem correct.
However, in Sindarin there is the topic of lenition (softening) of consonants (see here: elvish.org/gwaith/sindarin_pho…) under certain circumstances. There doesn't seem to be a precise consensus on when this happens, though. A good article on this particular subject is this: fa-kuan.muc.de/SINDARIN.RXML (see section about the inscription on the doors of Moria) which seems plausible to me. It explains how "mellon" should actually have been lenited (to "vellon") but wasn't because it was, in fact, the password and needed to be spoken in its original form. This apparently threw Gandalf off track at first because he, of course, knew Sindarin perfectly well, as did the creators of the inscription.
Long story short: depending on the context you wish to use this in, "Pedo muig a minno" would be correct but if you wish to adhere to lenition rules it would become "Pedo vuig a minno".

I went to the bathroom to retrieve the palette knife I had washed previously, the window was open, noticed the colour of the sky, decided to check whether some of the laundry was already dry and bring it inside.
By the time I had gone from the bathroom to the balcony via the kitchen it was just starting to rain (but everything was dry, so I hurriedly brought everything inside.
Then I run one flight of stairs to my mother, to help her retrieve *her* laundry, and by the time I reached her and we were half-way through her laundry it had started to *pour*
(most of her laundry was saved by the awning)
Sono andata in bagno a riprendere una spatola che avevo lavato, c'era la finestra aperta, ho notato il colore del cielo, deciso di controllare se c'era della biancheria già asciutta e iniziare a ritirare.
Ora che ho fatto il giro bagno -> cucina -> balcone stava iniziando a piovere (tutta la biancheria era asciutta, l'ho ritirata in fretta e furia).
Poi ho corso un piano di scale per andare ad aiutare mia madre a ritirare la *sua* biancheria, e ora che l'ho raggiunta ed eravamo a metà lavoro si è messo a *diluviare*.
(la maggiorparte del suo bucato è stata salvata dalle tende da sole)

Up to know, everything I've ever painted¹ was on a format between A6 and B8. The acrylic paint I have is in 20 ml tubes, other than 120 ml of titanium white that is lasting me forever.
Then during the weekend I had an overambitious idea that I don't even mention, because it will end in nothing, and I decided I wanted to do at least a couple things on a slightly bigger format, before committing to anything else.
Of course, I also never bought any mounted canvas: I paint mostly on watercolour (postcard) paper, as that sturdy enough for such small formats, and I have a couple pieces of canvas mounted on cardboard, also in A6, that I haven't used yet.
And it was the weekend, and a weekend when I was too busy to visit a shop, but I had a couple one-hour slots and I was feeling the Urge.
So I took the biggest pad of watercolour paper I have (A3-ish, spiral bound at the top, not even glued on the sides) and started to paint with acrylic on it.

TFW you partially pull your drying rack out of the wall (it's attached with six screws that go into wall plugs, one of the plugs came out of the wall) in the morning, and then in the evening you see that it has been removed from the wall, *and* the wall has already been repaired so that it can be reattached soon.

TFW alla mattina strappi parzialmente dal muro lo stendibiancheria (è attaccato con sei viti/tasselli e uno dei tasselli è uscito dal muro), e alla sera scopri che è stato staccato completamente e il muro è già stato riparato per poterlo riappendere a breve.

Today I've had a chance to notice that we (western societies) are sending off our textile waste to another continent, where at least some of it gets probably¹ shipped to China to be processed into felt to protect the floor when painting the walls, and then shipped back to us.
Why aren't we doing this anymore in Prato²? It could even be done by Chinese nationals, there, but at least it wouldn't travel halfway around the world and back!
¹ I have no idea whether that's the origin of that textile waste, maybe that felt was using textile waste from China itself, but still.

Ma è difficile fare qualcosa che abbia veramente un effetto, come individui.
(Rammendarsi i vestiti ha tanti buoni effetti ed è un'ottima pratica da consigliarsi a prescindere, anche se difficilmente ha un vero impatto sul problema)

I'd expect not enough people are painting their walls to use all of the textile waste that gets produced.
Even if those felts were made of a polyester and cotton mix that probably comes from some of the worst garments for recycling (at least if one considers both the ease of recycling and the mass)

For all the thousands of posts I've seen on the Fediverse about "alt text or I won't boost" or that take even harsher stances, and the dozens of posts taking a more encouraging stance... why the hell isn't anyone talking about the Fediverse's content warning problem?
So many instances require content warnings for explicit or violent images... and so many artists just say "NSFW Image."
My dude, my pal, my bro... I'm not clicking that. Is it art? Is it real person porn? Is it gay or het? Is it a naked body or is it anal sex? Is it bdsm? Vore? Monsterfucking?
