Yesterday while sewing I was watching a second-channel video of somebody talking about the current status of the main-channel project while cleaning the house and doing laundry and washing the dishes.
This morning, while doing laundry, I thought that I really hope at least some of this kind of things survives in the future, because *how cool* would it be to have a video of somebody in the past just doing their daily chores while chatting about unrelated things? even if we no longer care about the unrelated things, just to be able to see a glimpse in the almost¹ regular life of people.
Honesty, it's already nice to see the difference with the way those things are done in this corner of the world.
¹ I mean, it's still somebody who is recording a video that will get posted on the internet for everybody to see, some things are probably a bit different from the way the would be done in private.

I never use Caps Lock, so I disable the Caps Lock key completely with xmodmap, to avoid hitting it by accident.
Occasionally my X server gets into caps-lock state anyway. (Usually some complicated stunt was involved, like attaching x11vnc to the display remotely.) And then I can't turn it off again using the Caps Lock key.
So I wrote a tiny X client that lets me type 'xcapslock off' at a shell prompt …
… and then I had to make an alias to it, called 'XCAPSLOCK OFF'.

I actually use and like to have Caps Lock.
But I believe the Debian installer still contains a change I made when I discovered that the Brazilian Portuguese keyboard layout has 106 keys, and / is on the 106th key - so I had to be able to switch out of it manually without needing to type any absolute paths!

This undergraduate thesis by Jan Strehmel deserves a prize:
𝐀𝐛𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭. One of the most fundamental unanswered questions that has been bothering mankind during the Anthropocene is whether the use of swearwords in open source code is positively or negatively correlated with source code quality. To investigate this profound matter we crawled and analysed over 3800 C open source code containing English swearwords and over 7600 C open source code not containing swearwords from GitHub. Subsequently, we quantified the adherence of these two distinct sets of source code to coding standards, which we deploy as a proxy for source code quality via the SoftWipe tool developed in our group. We find that open source code containing swearwords exhibit significantly better code quality than those not containing swearwords under several statistical tests. We hypothesise that the use of swearwords constitutes an indicator of a profound emotional involvement of the programmer with the code and its inherent complexities, thus yielding better code based on a thorough, critical, and dialectic code analysis process.

It really sucks to be in a world where you have to choose between two vendors for the tools you must use to access most of your life, both of which have clearly stated they are actively working against both your best interests and the best interests of society. Of course, there's an alternative — various third parties, many of which are actively malicious and none of which are remotely reasonable choices when it comes to security, feature parity, or anything else.
Today this is about browsers, but the fact that I have to specify is its own problem.

Since there are no more analog TV stations on the air in this country, I have no way of testing sets I find it thrift stores anymore.
So, I finally decided to try the code that Charles Lohr developed for tricking an ESP8266 into transmitting analog TV signals over the air with its RX pin.
This is actually someone else's version of his code because he wrote his code to be compiled in the esp8266 SDK environment and I don't know how to use that. This code compiles in the Arduino IDE and it does work!
This is being transmitted over the air. This is not a composite video signal.

This is your regular PSA to learn the “over-under method” of rolling cables!
Coiling a cable the ‘normal’ way, whether just in your hands, around your elbow, or somewhere else, imparts a 1/2 axial twist to the cable each time.
That’s the main thing that causes your extension cables to develop kinks and degrade!
If you use the over-under method, the 1/2 twist is counteracted by a -1/2 twist every second loop, so the cable is kept flat and unstressed.
This can hugely increase the lifetime of your electrical cables, to upwards of 20 years of heavy use, without kinks or twists.

Ovvero esattamente il contrario del vivere la casa.
¹ ovviamente la foto è di una donna. Che sembra avere il numero giusto di dita, però sta caricando una lavatrice chiusa, e la marca della lavatrice sembrano pseudolettere.

Io cercherei qualche falegname interessato all'upcycling. Se non è recuperabile come strumento musicale magari si può convertire in un altro mobile senza snaturarne l'aspetto esteriore. 🤔
i pianoforte sono tra i rari strumenti che, salvo eccezioni, non aumentano di valore col tempo. Anzi.

It's officially autumn, the temperature indoors is the same that we would have in winter (except that there isn't a nice hot radiator to hug now and then) and I'm getting bored of cold lunches.
So I've just taken the thermal bento box out of the cupboard it has been sitting in for years, and on the stove there is a pot of mixed beans “ragù”, cooking at least for a couple of hours.
Tomorrow morning it will get re-heated, I'll prepare some cous cous, probably cook a few apples, and then we'll find out whether the thermal bentos are still working. (And if they don't, lukewarm cous cous is much more tolerable than lukewarm soup)

È ufficialmente autunno, la temperatura in casa è la stessa che ci sarebbe d'inverno (e non c'è neanche un calorifero caldo da abbracciare ogni tanto) e non ne posso più di pranzi freddi.
Quindi ho appena riesumato le schiscette termiche dal mobiletto dove sono rimaste per anni, e sul fornello c'è un “ragù” di fagioli misti che cuoce almeno per un paio di ore.
Domattina verrà riscaldato, preparerò del cous cous, probabilmente cuocerò un paio di mele, e poi si scoprirà se le schiscette termiche funzionano ancora. (E se non funzionano, se non altro il cous cous tiepido è decisamente più tollerabile di una minestra tiepida)

Anyway, the older I get the more I want to have things on (crochet) lace doilies on the furniture in the living / dining room.
And the bad thing is that I already have access to most of my grandmother's doilies, so I will probably have them with very little effort in the near future.
One of those things may be a model of Minas Tirith, because I may be growing old, but I'm still a nerd. But still. doilies! and tea cozies! I wonder what's next!

Been really enjoying learning #Inkscape over the last few days as a replacement to what I used to do in Adobe Illustrator.
Definitely a powerful program for text and vector graphics. Now that I've got my way around it with shortcuts and the like, I won't ever open or pay for Adobe Illustrator again.
It's also ticking the boxes for the type of work I used to do in Adobe Photoshop in regards to graphic design and text layout work for posters and such.

Two Linen Hoods

I’ve been influenced again into feeling the need for a garment.
It was again a case of multiple sources conspiring in the same direction for unrelated reasons, but I decided I absolutely needed a linen hood, made from the heavy white linen I knew I had in my stash.
Why? I don’t know. I do like the feeling of wearing a hood, and the white linen should give a decent protection from the sun, but I don’t know how often I’m going to wear these instead of just a hat. On the other hand the linen was already there and I needed something small to sew.
My first idea was to make a square hood: some time ago I had already made one out of some leftovers of duvet cover, vaguely inspired by theS , because I have a long-term plan of making one a bit more from scratch1.
I like the fact that this pattern is completely made out of squares and rectangles, and while the flannel one is quite fitting, as suitable for a warm garment, I felt that by making it just a cm or two wider it would have worked nicely for a warm weather one, and indeed it did.
Except, before I even started on the square hood, I started to think that the same square top would also be good for a hood-scarf, one of those long flowy garments that sit on the head, wrap around the neck and fall down, moving with the wind and the movements of the person.
Because, let’s be honest. worn in a way that look like a veil they feel nice, it’s true. But with the help of a couple of pins then you can do this.
And no, I’ve never played that game2, and I’m not even 100% sure what it is about, other than killing people, climbing buildings and petting cats3, but that’s not really an issue when making a bit of casual cosplay of something, right?
Anyway, should anybody feel the need to make themselves a hood or ten, the patterns have been released as usual as #FreeSoftWear: square hoodand hood scarf.

today my mother mentioned thinking about the croccante (almond brittle) her grandmother used to make.
we didn't have enough almonds at home, nor the time to make proper croccante.
but we did have a slightly stale package of unsweetened cornflakes.
some sugar may have accidentally fallen into a pan, and after it was almost liquid and slightly caramelized some cornflakes may have accidentally fallen in the sugar.
(this finished a meal that had started with some popcorn, in front of a movie, and progressed with bean (and tomato) spreads on freshly baked bread. it's all vegetables so it's healthy, right?)
(oh, and we've had polenta* for lunch. but at least the bread wasn't made with cornmeal :D )

oggi mia madre stava pensando al croccante che faceva sua nonna.
non avevamo abbastanza mandorle in casa, né il tempo di preparare del croccante per bene.
però c'era in giro una confezione di cornflakes senza zucchero un po' vecchiotto.
potrebbe essere accidentalmente caduto dello zucchero in un pentolino, e quando era quasi liquido e leggermente caramellato potrebbero esserci caduti dentro dei cornflakes.
(e questo è stato il dolce in un pasto iniziato con dei popcorn, guardando un film, e proseguito con creme di fagioli (e pomodori) sul pane appena sfornato. Sono tutti vegetali quindi fanno bene, giusto?)
(ah, e a pranzo c'era stata polenta*. ma almeno il pane di stasera non era pan giald)

Stamattina, mentre stendevo il bucato, ho pensato che spero veramente che almeno qualcuno di questo video sopravviva nel futuro, perché quanto non sarebbe figo avere un video di qualcuno nel passato che svolge questi compiti quotidiani mentre chiacchera di cose scorrelate? anche se non ci interessa niente delle cose di cui parla, solo per avere una finestra sulla vita quasi¹ quotidiana della gente.
Tutto sommato è già carino adesso vedere la differenza con il modo in cui quelle stesse cose vengono fatte da quest'altra parte del mondo.
¹ è comunque qualcuno che si sta riprendendo per un video che finirà sull'internet dove tutti lo vedono, immagino che non sia proprio proprio tutto identico a come quelle cose verrebbero fatte in privato.

and when it started to get written down a bit, often they skimp on the details that are obvious to everybody at the time (and baffle us).
a video on its own would probably have parts that leave us baffled too¹, but having both written sources and unrelated videos I hope would solve a number of mysteries!
¹ why is she saying that she's washing the clothes, when she's just putting them in an oddly shaped box and going away?
