This week we worked mostly on some internal tools to help us keep more products in stock, but we did get a moment to also do a little hardware! First up we’re working on bringing up the Flopp…Adafruit Industries - Makers, hackers, artists, designers and engineers!
a nifty chip that is! this version will also support floppy disk emulation mode by letting us control the direction of the two-level shifters. An additional GPIO expander provides the 4-way button interface, which we will use for offline disk imaging.

aaaaand I've caused an email to be sent to a number of work address just before 7 in the morning of a Sunday.
(I was reading wiki.archlinux.org/title/GNU_S… for personal reasons, as one does on 7 in the morning of a Sunday, and found a workaround for a problem I had at $DAYJOB, so I added a note to the relevant ticket)
(and honestly if the people involved get a notification from their work email at that hour, that's their problem: it's all people above me in the power hierarchy and it's not like we have a culture of having to be ready to reply to things at all hours, to the contrary)

I have no idea either.
Happy Maladay1 to those who celebrate it, I guess.
If you care about the how, it started as china ink on tracing paper, with the help of a template (and a correction sheet for one page where I used the wrong line on the template).
A rubber stamp was carved with the author’s signature and stamped on white paper because the ink from the pad wasn’t working well on tracing paper.
Then everything was scanned (with the correction on top of the wrong page) asemic_zine_scans.tar.
Imported in Inkscape and traced asemic_zine_svg.tar.
Printed, cut in half, folded and stapled. The magenta lines weren’t by design, but are there because my printer is currently2cursed.
And finally, asemic_zine.pdf was created, joining the pages together with pdfjam, for convenience in case somebody wants to download the full thing.
All the .tar and .pdf downloads from this page are released under the WTFPL, or All Rites Reversed..

@𝕽𝖔𝖇𝖔 a merenda invece abbiamo assaggiato il Sencha (té verde), per fortuna preso solo come campione da 20 grammi, e quello invece è stato fortemente deludente: insulso e pochissimo saporito.
O meglio, sarebbe stato deludente se avessi avuto aspettative, ma tutto sommato gli Irlandesi non è che siano famosi per i loro té verdi, per cui le aspettative erano basse, e posso dimenticarmene senza danno e tornare a comprare té verde dalle coppie italo-nipponiche :D

Like we could just have a laptop. And store the records on there. Not on the internet. We could back them up with an external hard drive, or even physical copies in a locked file cabinet.

To be honest, it is difficult to take anticapitalistic groups seriously if they use laptops at all. Laptops (and smartphones too) are basically a lot of capitalism squeezed and packed very hard to fit inside the the small devices we use today.
Electric power is pretty capitalistic too. Most electric power in the world is generated and distributed by huge capitalistic companies. Even if you have PV at home I doubt your panels were made by a local family-owned shop.

Cleaning the nozzle of my bottle of carpenter's glue with Isopropyl alcohol when I suddenly remembered this D&D page.
Sovereign Glue
Wondrous Item, legendaryThis viscous, milky-white substance can form a permanent adhesive bond between any two objects. It must be stored in a jar or flask that has been coated inside with oil of slipperiness [emphasis mine]. When found, a container contains 1d6 + 1 ounces.

The idea for this project came after @neauoire & I were discussing the disappearance of certain traditional seasteading skills and maritime communication knowledge. We believe these skills are valuable when electronics misbehave, but they're also just generally fun to learn and to use.

Last weekend I've bought my first (convection) microwave oven, ever!
And. it. has. buttons. (and a knob)
And I didn't take much effort finding it, it was bought with supermarket points.
One meal has been successfully reheated, one piece of bread has been unsuccessfully grilled (I didn't allow enough time because the tea was already ready :D ) and actual cooking attempts will follow in the next months

Yesterday while sewing I was watching a second-channel video of somebody talking about the current status of the main-channel project while cleaning the house and doing laundry and washing the dishes.
This morning, while doing laundry, I thought that I really hope at least some of this kind of things survives in the future, because *how cool* would it be to have a video of somebody in the past just doing their daily chores while chatting about unrelated things? even if we no longer care about the unrelated things, just to be able to see a glimpse in the almost¹ regular life of people.
Honesty, it's already nice to see the difference with the way those things are done in this corner of the world.
¹ I mean, it's still somebody who is recording a video that will get posted on the internet for everybody to see, some things are probably a bit different from the way the would be done in private.

and when it started to get written down a bit, often they skimp on the details that are obvious to everybody at the time (and baffle us).
a video on its own would probably have parts that leave us baffled too¹, but having both written sources and unrelated videos I hope would solve a number of mysteries!
¹ why is she saying that she's washing the clothes, when she's just putting them in an oddly shaped box and going away?
And with this project I think I'm doing both a mantua makers seam and a prickstitch for the first time. or maybe I have already done them, but under a different name?

I never use Caps Lock, so I disable the Caps Lock key completely with xmodmap, to avoid hitting it by accident.
Occasionally my X server gets into caps-lock state anyway. (Usually some complicated stunt was involved, like attaching x11vnc to the display remotely.) And then I can't turn it off again using the Caps Lock key.
So I wrote a tiny X client that lets me type 'xcapslock off' at a shell prompt …
… and then I had to make an alias to it, called 'XCAPSLOCK OFF'.

I actually use and like to have Caps Lock.
But I believe the Debian installer still contains a change I made when I discovered that the Brazilian Portuguese keyboard layout has 106 keys, and / is on the 106th key - so I had to be able to switch out of it manually without needing to type any absolute paths!

One of the most fundamental unanswered questions that has been bothering mankind during the Anthropocene is whether the use of swearwords in open source code is positively or negatively correlated with source code quality. To investigate this profound matter we crawled and analysed over 3800 C open source code containing English swearwords and over 7600 C open source code not containing swearwords from GitHub. Subsequently, we quantified the adherence of these two distinct sets of source code to coding standards, which we deploy as a proxy for source code quality via the SoftWipe tool developed in our group. We find that open source code containing swearwords exhibit significantly better code quality than those not containing swearwords under several statistical tests. We hypothesise that the use of swearwords constitutes an indicator of a profound emotional involvement of the programmer with the code and its inherent complexities, thus yielding better code based on a thorough, critical, and dialectic code analysis process.

It really sucks to be in a world where you have to choose between two vendors for the tools you must use to access most of your life, both of which have clearly stated they are actively working against both your best interests and the best interests of society. Of course, there's an alternative — various third parties, many of which are actively malicious and none of which are remotely reasonable choices when it comes to security, feature parity, or anything else.
Today this is about browsers, but the fact that I have to specify is its own problem.

Since there are no more analog TV stations on the air in this country, I have no way of testing sets I find it thrift stores anymore.
So, I finally decided to try the code that Charles Lohr developed for tricking an ESP8266 into transmitting analog TV signals over the air with its RX pin.
This is actually someone else's version of his code because he wrote his code to be compiled in the esp8266 SDK environment and I don't know how to use that. This code compiles in the Arduino IDE and it does work!
This is being transmitted over the air. This is not a composite video signal.

This is your regular PSA to learn the “over-under method” of rolling cables!
Coiling a cable the ‘normal’ way, whether just in your hands, around your elbow, or somewhere else, imparts a 1/2 axial twist to the cable each time.
That’s the main thing that causes your extension cables to develop kinks and degrade!
If you use the over-under method, the 1/2 twist is counteracted by a -1/2 twist every second loop, so the cable is kept flat and unstressed.
This can hugely increase the lifetime of your electrical cables, to upwards of 20 years of heavy use, without kinks or twists.

Ovvero esattamente il contrario del vivere la casa.
¹ ovviamente la foto è di una donna. Che sembra avere il numero giusto di dita, però sta caricando una lavatrice chiusa, e la marca della lavatrice sembrano pseudolettere.

It's officially autumn, the temperature indoors is the same that we would have in winter (except that there isn't a nice hot radiator to hug now and then) and I'm getting bored of cold lunches.
So I've just taken the thermal bento box out of the cupboard it has been sitting in for years, and on the stove there is a pot of mixed beans “ragù”, cooking at least for a couple of hours.
Tomorrow morning it will get re-heated, I'll prepare some cous cous, probably cook a few apples, and then we'll find out whether the thermal bentos are still working. (And if they don't, lukewarm cous cous is much more tolerable than lukewarm soup)
È ufficialmente autunno, la temperatura in casa è la stessa che ci sarebbe d'inverno (e non c'è neanche un calorifero caldo da abbracciare ogni tanto) e non ne posso più di pranzi freddi.
Quindi ho appena riesumato le schiscette termiche dal mobiletto dove sono rimaste per anni, e sul fornello c'è un “ragù” di fagioli misti che cuoce almeno per un paio di ore.
Domattina verrà riscaldato, preparerò del cous cous, probabilmente cuocerò un paio di mele, e poi si scoprirà se le schiscette termiche funzionano ancora. (E se non funzionano, se non altro il cous cous tiepido è decisamente più tollerabile di una minestra tiepida)
