red as in Garibaldi, not as in Star Trek, and right now I've only done one cut, and then moved on to other things (it was time for tea :D ), but I plan to finish cutting most pieces tomorrow and then start (slowly) #sewing

I've decided I need to do something vaguely useful with a few microcontroller boards I have, use some of the simple ESP8266 ones to collect temperature and humidity data from various rooms of the house to a MQTT server, collect that data in a RRD and show the current values on an epaper panel together with the current time and weather forecast.
Current status is:
* the MQTT server at home is no longer working (uops, that's why I wasn't receiving other unrelated notifications. I believe I know what the reason is, and how to solve it, but not today. I have mosquitto installed also on the laptop and that one is working)
* the python library I wanted to use to read data from MQTT is broken in debian testing (bug opened at the end of november)
* I can't find the ESP8266 boards. I know that they are around here somewhere, but WHERE???

Then, with the board nicely sitting on a breadboard, a stable 3.3V and no ratnest of jumper cables I've seen that the code I wrote last week works: the board turns on, connects and sends the temperature and humidity data from the DHT22 on mqtt, sets a timer and goes into deep sleep.
As long as you don't use Serial.flush(); before going into deep sleep, otherwise it will hang on it until it *gets* a serial, or something, and it will not have a serial while running on battery (uooops).
(yes, the DHT22 seems to be working fine on 3.3V, probably as long as it's close enough to the board that the voltage isn't dropping. and I'm not going to have 5V while on battery, so 3.3V it is)

The Bag of Random Sensors that had the DHT22 also gifted me with 3 (THREE!) BMP280 (temperature and atmospheric pressure, I2C or SPI).
While playing with them I've learned:
* The #esp32c3 can use #i2c on any pin; the default I believe is 8 and 9, but they are also used while programming, so meh
* You can change the i2c pins in #arduino by calling Wire.setPins(I2C_SDA, I2C_SCL); before any Wire.begin();
* There is an example sketch called Wire -> WireScan which scans for i2c devices (you will have to change it to use the pins you want to use with a call to Wire.setPins) which is a godsend.

aaaand, temperature and pressure have been read.
for some reason, however, right now arduino isn't compiling the sketch twice in a row (with the error “panic: runtime error: index out of range [9] with length 9”).
But I'll look into it probably during the Christmas holidays, for today I'm ok with this.

instead, I've looked a bit at the python side of things, and surprisingly what I did worked fine, even if it wasn't much.
The whole ESP32 family can do hardware I2C on most of their bidirectional GPIO pins. I2C is a relatively simple protocol that can be simulated in software on any GPIO pin on any MCU (FYI):

Today I've been "nerd snipped" by a friend.
He had to write some excel formulas, and he was writing them in 'pseudocode' before putting the formula together, while commenting about "why I can't write formulas in a sane language".
So I've spent my evening (and part of my night) doing this:

They are based on a menswear block, so for people who need more fullness in the front than in the back; one day I will also draft the same pattern based on a womanswear block, but right now I don't need jeans-like trousers in non-denim and I don't have a source for decent denim, so don't hold your breath for it :)

- Dist-upgraded my VPS from Debian 10 to Debian 11
- Updated the ansible playbook which configure my VPS almost up to date with the real state of my VPS. Things have started to diverge many moons ago. Now is quite back on track to be able to run without any unwanted side effects
- Installed Dentrite matrix homeserver with a couple of bridges, using the aforementioned ansible playbook

Status update on the flannel shirt: all of the main pieces have been assembled, two buttonholes out of five have been done. I still have to fell the seams on the sleeves and the sides, and hemstitch the hems. And then I must not forget the reinforcement patches at the sides and sleeves. The one I've almost forgotten about about every time I think on what's still to do on the shirt :D
Being able to wear it this weekend is starting to sound feasible, unless something unexpected happens.

#til that there is yet another #fabric-based thing that is called buckram and it has some similarities, but is definitely a different thing from the other two I knew.
A mesh material used to make fursuit eye pieces.
(The other two are the buckram used in hats and the one used to stiffen stays)
I was outside for a walk with @Diego Roversi , and asked him to come with me to a #fabric shop, so that I could buy exactly what I needed (to wrap christmas packages), with no time to look around at what they had and get ideas.
We did. I got what I needed. We payed.
And then just before leaving I noticed some nice woolens. And I may have taken a picture and sent it to my mother.

I still have to finish other handsewn things, but I have the cutting mat on the table, and I decided I might as well start cutting the #AugustaStays, and then maybe later in the weekend I can make the buckram.
Natural linen would have probably been better than white¹, but oh well, in 200 years they are going to be yellow too :D and they will be trimmed with powder blue cotton

Beside the nightgown, the sewing plan for this week involved making a second bathrobe like the one I made a few weeks ago (in the picture, this one is a darker gray) so that a) I now have a SPARE! (rather than just one disintegrating bathrobe :D ) b) the bulky fabric isn't taking up space in the stash anymore c) I've taken improved step-by-step pictures to publish the pattern.
Today I've done all of the machine sewing, I only have to hemstitch all of the binding by hand (because I'm a masochist).
And this makes it three garments for which I have written instructions, taken pictures, and “only” need to edit those pictures and add them to instructions to be able to publish the pattern.

@Teffer and people who has made 18th century #stays : I'm reading the instructions for the #AugustaStays and they say to layer the fabric, starting from the outside, as outer layer, heavyweight linen interlining, buckram, so that buckram is towards the body, with just the optional lining separating it from the shift.
Do you have any idea why it isn't layered as outer layer, buckram, heavyweight lining?

TFW you realize you've been cleaning and oiling a domestic power tool while it was on, because the sun was shining on the lamp and you couldn't see it was on.
luckily, my foot was quite far from the pedal, so the actual risk was minimal.

One thing that I've seen mentioned less than other #fediTips these days is that in the fediverse culture the number of followers isn't considered important, having *mutuals* is.
Some instances even hide the number of followers and people followed, and users can do so for their own account.
Even when it's visible, having a huge number of followers and following very few people is looked at as a oddity, and a sign of somebody who's probably not interested in interacting with people, and thus is not really part of the fediverse culture.
The converse is also true: users with almost no followers who follow a lot of people (unless they are really new) give a bad “bot” vibe, and people in the fediverse tend to be wary of them.
Having a reasonable number of both followers and people followed is seen as ideal.
This doesn't mean that you have to follow everybody who follows you! curating the list of people you follow is an important part of the fediverse experience, and you should only follow people whose posts are of interest to you and will make your life better. However I'd recommend giving at least a chance to everybody who follows you, looking at their profile and posts and consider whether you want to follow them.
And then, remember that unfollowing people is perfectly acceptable and requires no explanation: following somebody is not a long term commitment and consent can be given and taken away at any time.

I was shocked and offended by the fact that neither units nor qalc (the command line programs) know about the talent unit of weight.
except I was wrong, units *does* know about the talent, but only the Attic and the Aeginetan ones.
It's still missing the Babylonian one, which is the one I was looking for, but nevermind.
(also: 90 kg for an axe? 60 kg for the blade of a dagger? 300 kg carried by one person? I can see how one needs to be two thirds god to use this kind of equipment :D )

Mind you, I admit that elastane in knits is pretty useful, and it helps them do what it's in the nature of knits to do.
But wovens. wovens are supposed to be dimensionally stable, not elastic!
And who in their right mind has *ever* thought “this silk satin would be better if it had a bit of elastane in it”???
(I only had to cut a square, and I had to measure it something like 12 times)
Maybe you can make the same for elastane.
the problem isn't that it shrinks or expands in a consistent way. the problem is that, being silk satin, it shifted and moved as if possessed. and when I tried to pull on it gently to try and get a straigth line, the elastane would stretch, and then shift even more when I released it.
And it's not like it's doing anything useful.

Poi a cena prendete la pappa al pomodoro avanzata dal pranzo, metteteci dentro della trita di pollo, fatene delle polpette e cuocetele in padella, riciclando il piatto che è stato inventato per riciclare :D
E poi al pranzo dopo ci son le polpette avanzate dalla cena da scaldare al volo in forno :D

Components: 2 33Ohm resistors in serie, 1 thick washer, some silicone sealant, some wire.
Componenti: 2 resistenze da 33Ohm in serie, 1 rondella un po' spessa, un po' di silicone sigillante e qualche cavo.
A bit less of 0.5W, enough for reaching 35 C - 38 C.
Poco meno di mezzo Watt di potenza, abbastanza per raggiungere tra i 35 e i 38 gradi.

Problems, problems, self-induced #sewingPersonProblems.
I've done the last machine seam on the flannel shirt¹, but I want to use the same blue thread to sew a pair of linen trousers for my SO. He's not going to wear them for a few months, of course, but I want to see if the pattern is correct, so they are high priority.
However, my mother has just finished a filet crochet yoke for a nightgown that I'm going to make in linen for myself. Again, not something that is going to be worn any time soon², but it's a quick sew and it will allow me to know how much leftover linen I have for another project. But it needs a different colour of thread in the machine.
The sensible thing would be to sew the trousers during the next week, and then sew the nightgown. Luckily it's also the lazy thing, so that's probably what I'm going to do.
Can you guess how much I'd want to change plans and start with the nightgown? :D
(there will be pictures of everything mentioned. one day. :D )
¹ lots of handsewing remains, but that takes a different time slot.
² unless I decide to wear it as a chemise, but even then in winter I don't really need a linen one.

On a more serious note: I still have to edit a few step-by-step pictures and write an introduction, and then the pattern for those jeans will be ready for publishing.
And I've also started to cut the fabric for the nightgown, AND wrote the instructions I plan to follow while sewing it, so that I can take pictures and then publish also that pattern.
The yoke part will have a lot of “and then magic happens” however, as I have no idea how to write a crochet pattern.

I still have to baste the seam lines for the armscyes and cut the gussets out of the sleeves (which I'm going to do only when I'm ready to sew them, to avoid losing pieces), and then I'll be able to clear the living room table :D

I started by cutting and sewing the sleeve gussets (so that all of the cutting is done) and the sleeves are being sewn. I've sewn one of the cuffs, and the next step will probably be the other one, and I've sewn, but not pressed, the collar and small tab for the center front.
The sewing silk is going through the fabric very smoothly, I love working with it and I don't regret not doing the straight seams by machine at all.

The back has also been attached to the yoke (straight seams), and I'm attaching the gathered part.
The basic body of the sleeves have been sewn, but I still have to attach the cuffs (which are already sewed and pressed) and the reinforcement patches (I must remember the reinforcement patches.)
The fabric is fraying a bit, which isn't great while working on it, but is not going to be a problem in the finished garment, since every raw edge is nicely finished.

Currently sewing the side seams, and then I'll be able to try the shirt on!

We still have to go back and visit the last couple of rooms that we didn't have time to visit because the museum was closing down, but we keep postponing it because it's just two rooms, and what if we get lost rewatching everything else, and still miss those?
(no, we've never been thrown out of a museum because it was closing. we always left them with good grace after the second or third announcement that it was closing, *before* they actually have to come and grab us with force :D )
(and it's not because we get there late :D )

also, I found that the reinforcement patches I've cut are too small, so tomorrow I'll cut new ones. and then buttons and buttonholes.
The plans for the evening (meeting people online) have changed, so there is a decent chance that the dress code will be “evening dress, i.e. pajamas”, but wearing the new shirt on New Year's Day looks feasible.
Also, there is still a bit of thread on the spool, probably enough for the patches.

I still have to cut and sew at least one detachable collar, but that will happen later, now I think I'll move on to the jacket project and ideally the Augusta Stays.
I hope to be able to take proper pictures of the shirt this weekend!
