Linux Day 2025

I think it's fun that I often feel like several people on fedi are like my neighbors.
We don't follow each other, but we follow the same people, so we occasionally boost each other and like each other's stuff, but there's no real interest for more on either side, and like, that's great. I love that for us.
I love being friendly acquaintances on the internet.
If you're a friendly acquaintance, I hope you're having a nice morning, afternoon, or evening.

I need to do something quick and easy, and to clear up the sewing room a bit: I'll just do this cap for which I've cut the fabric more than one year ago, should only require a couple hours.
proceeds to do some finishing by hand over each seam.
like this

anyway, unexpected hand-finishing done, machine seams all done, now the only thing that is missing is a final pressing and then attaching the lining by hand (as I always expected to do).
And then I'll have a second choice of hat to go with my autumn outfit, for when for some inexplicable reason I may not want to wear a witch hat with ear flaps.

and the button on top. I almost forgot about the button on top.
And back when I had cut the fabric I had forgotten about it too, so tomorrow I'll have to dig through the stash until I get to the remains of this fabric, but I know I still have it.

If you're helping people sign up on here, that's great! 👏
However, I'd strongly suggest not signing up on the mastodon.social server. It's way way too large and that's dangerous (here's why fedi.tips/its-a-really-bad-ide…).
I know some find choice overwhelming, so if you just want one general long-established very busy server mas.to is a better option for example.
There are also lots of other good servers listed at fedi.garden and joinmastodon.org/servers

FWIW I'm reasonably sure Facebook never supported XMPP federation. They supported logging in via XMPP with a regular XMPP client (c2s) but they didn't support s2s. Meaning you could only chat with other Facebook users.
GTalk had federation and it was somewhat bad when they shut that down. But I don't remember Facebook's XMPP access being very relevant for the larger ecosystem.
@daniel I agree that it would be a better example. Wikipedia has decent references if you'd like to update the article: support.google.com/talk/?hl=en…

Yesterday we bought 1 kg of chestnuts from the supermarket. This morning we noticed a few chestnuts while walking, decided to pick some up and mix them with those from the supermarket and *without going out of our way or anything* we accidentally found ourselves with almost another kg of chestnuts.

Friendly reminder to watch out for AI pattern scams! Lazy pattern makers will do AI patterns (or just be lazy) and instructions that don't math or fit together
A friend just reached out to me regarding a quilt block. The pattern was advertised at 12 inch block when it was 14 inches using the pattern. The pictured design wasn't possible!. The math didn't math.
She had already painstakingly color coordinated 8 colors for the design, to coordinate with a 12 inch pre-printed block.
So I helped her tweak the block design to keep her 8 fabric choices, to get the math to math.
What is worse: she blamed herself! The pattern was garbage, it wasn't her fault at all.

#Debian #armel has reached end of life with the release of #trixie and will not be included in #forky (already being removed from sid).
Unfortunately, that means e-waste for the affected devices, such as several older #RPi editions (unless switching to Raspian, which may or may not even work or support them for longer and is effort anyway).
armel
has not been part of #LTS and #ELTS for a while, but this was not a problem as it’s a minority architecture and users could always upgrade (btw, if your armel box is still running bookworm, you’ll want to be on trixie by 2026-06-10).
I asked for it to be included in trixie LTS and ELTS, so that the old hardware can be used mostly securely until about 2035 instead of 2028, and the limiting factor for this is not will or infrastructure but funding. (While most security fixes aren’t specific to one of the architectures in question, there’s still some overhead, and armel
is often slower to build and may need some more hand-holding than the newer armhf
and arm64
, so I believe that funding is actually needed.)
I’m just a private individual running one box with it I got as a gift, so I cannot offer much, but if you care about Debian and can offer funding, please approach @freexian (who organise LTS and offer ELTS as a separate-from-Debian offer) about this (and specifically mention armel
).
If someone has connections to organisations involved in devices that cannot run armv7 hardfloat Debian or better, such as the #Raspberry Pi foundation, please ask them to contribute to #Freexian in the same way, so we can have proper Debian on these devices for seven years longer than planned.
Thanks in advance.

tonight while half-asleep I thought of a possible set of rules for a card game using the cards in use in a #conworld
I've just realized that the potential maximum score is 20724, and that the game involves counting points at the end to see whether the game¹ has been won.
To be fair, in context card games are usually played mostly by school-age children and are supposed to be at a somewhat useful learning exercise.
But maybe it's a bit too much?

TIL that in Milan you can pay your metrò fare by tapping a debit (or credit, I guess) card when entering and when leaving.
which is pretty convenient when the high speed train you're on, that you've chosen precisely because it stopped at the same station as your next train, announces that they are stopping at another train station in a different part of Milan (~15 minutes by metro from the right station) and they tell you you can continue your journey “with the first useful train” (if you can find one)
thankfully the disruption had affected most trains, and my second one was also late, so I could catch it easily :D

Idea: Webstamps.
Little logos, like eki stamps: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eki_st… but for personal sites. The idea being that each person would design their own and put it someplace on their site, and anyone who visited the site could print it out and paste it into their stamp book.
Different from blog buttons in that they're meant to be displayed physically, with digital display an afterthought. With that in mind, they should probably:
• be monochrome
• not move (no animation)
• fit on a passport book page (5 x 3.5 in.)
• express something about the site
• include the home url
No real utility, but it could be fun.

Welcome to the Standard Reading Group. Each month, I'll post a selection from the standardebooks.org site. Download it, read at your own pace, and discuss it on the fediverse.
1. Use #StandardReading to post your thoughts. Follow that hashtag to keep up with the conversation.
2. Put discussion of specific details under a CW with the book title and chapter you're on.
3. CW for content, too! Many of these books will reflect the prejudices of their eras. Let's grapple with those topics, but give people the option to approach on their own terms.
4. The books are free, but consider donating to Standard Ebooks if you have the means.
Since we're starting mid-month, September's selection is a novella, The Room in the Dragon Volant: standardebooks.org/ebooks/j-sh…

It really depended on the way we naturally project agency on things for the illusion. But it wasn't hard to see through after a few minutes.
LLMs are better. It takes longer to see through them. But it's still basically the same thing, and getting LLM chatbots to do your homework isn't going to fare much better.

Some people on activitypub seemed a bit interested in mobile linux, so I decided to share a bit more of my experience on here. I will break it up into different posts covering different aspects.
I have been using a PinePhone 1.2b (3GB of RAM, 32GB eMMC storage) as my daily driver for roughly four years now. That may sound impressive, but I only really use a phone so people can reach me, for music on the go, and for a browser in a pinch. I'm not on my phone all that often.
PinePhone: pine64.org/devices/pinephone/
Currently, I have Mobian (based on Debian) Trixie installed on the internal eMMC storage and a 512GB microSD card mounted at /home, both utilizing full-disk encryption, for plenty of storage for my use-case. I'm using the Phosh interface, since it is more stable in my experience than plasma mobile currently. I also mostly use GTK software since they tend to integrate better with Phosh. I do not have cellular service on it, I even have the entire cellular modem disabled via the hardware dipswitch on the back currently.

I'm using cellular service rather than wifi more than half of the time, and I feel that these days it's way more reliable than it used to be: lately the main reason why I didn't have data service has been because I had not paid for it (ehm... :D ), or disabled international roaming because I live close to a border and then traveled internationally (double ehm...)
to be fair, I never use it for phone calls, only data, so I don't know whether receiving calls is reliable
(and I suspend a lot, because battery and not wanting notifications anyway)
