missà che la nostra è davvero arrivata, e sto meditando l'acquisto di una nuova: mi risulta che il consiglio del fediverso per stampanti che stampano e non cercano di infinocchiarti in abbonamenti vari siano le Brother, e i negozi soliti da cui compro questo genere di cose o non ne hanno, o hanno delle multifunzione enormi (e sono comunque esaurite)
avete consigli di negozi con sito da cui comprare stampanti, idealmente in it, al più in eu?
(sto cercando una laser a colori con connessione di rete cablata)

uno dei due operatori è trenord, l'altro operatore è TiLo, che è controllata al 50% da trenord e al 50% da FFS: una volta il personale del treno cambiava al confine, ma credo che adesso abbiano prevalentemente personale loro, certificato per viaggiare sulle linee di entrambe le nazioni, in modo da non doversi fermare a fare il cambio.
I treni di trenord su quella linea sono a due piani, per avere più capienza nella zona di Milano, mentre i treni TiLo sono a piano singolo, un po' più bassi, perché devono passare dalla galleria di Como che è, diciamo, vintage.

che poi è il motivo per cui quando si rompe il milano Porta Garibaldi - Chiasso, e lo sostituiscono con un altro treno, l'altro treno viene fermato a Como
causando polemiche sui giornali che li accusano di aver comprato i treni sbagliati che non passano dalle gallerie della linea, quando invece è perché hanno sostituito il treno giusto con un treno che è stato comprato per altre linee, ed è adeguato a quelle linee (ma non all'ultimo pezzetto di questa)
comunque sul tilo nella tratta italiana i controllori indossano la divisa trenord, uguale agli altri...

my mother's AC, also used for heating, has stopped working yesterday morning (service will be called tomorrow, because weekend).
since a few days I suspect that one of the heating elements in my oven is no longer turning on (I still need to test it, and then call service, I guess, or try to open it and see if there is anything obvious, otherwise call service).
and now my printer is giving errors of the “try a good clean, but if that doesn't work you need to change a motor that costs more than a new printer” kind (considering options. it wasn't printing that well lately, anyway).

@Antonio no, è che stirare bene delle cuciture molto curve su della lana non è così facile, quindi ci stava bene un'impuntura per tenerle piatte, ma non mi piaceva l'idea di un'impuntura a macchina in filo di colore contrastante¹, e quindi mi son messa a farla a mano in modo quasi invisibile.
¹ la stoffa è verde, variegata, con delle leggere sfumature tendenti all'oro. il filo con cui sto cucendo è quasi color oro (un po' più scuro): un punto molto breve ad una certa distanza dal successivo sparisce nella stoffa, una fila di punti a macchina si vedrebbe bene.
@Antonio beh, fondamentalmente cucire a mano consiste nel ripetere continuamente piccoli gesti, è il genere di attivita che si presta molto bene alla meditazione
però dipende da cosa uno fa con la testa mentre le mani cuciono

Yesterday we bought 1 kg of chestnuts from the supermarket. This morning we noticed a few chestnuts while walking, decided to pick some up and mix them with those from the supermarket and *without going out of our way or anything* we accidentally found ourselves with almost another kg of chestnuts.

I've just realized that the potential maximum score is 20724, and that the game involves counting points at the end to see whether the game¹ has been won.
To be fair, in context card games are usually played mostly by school-age children and are supposed to be at a somewhat useful learning exercise.
But maybe it's a bit too much?

TIL that in Milan you can pay your metrò fare by tapping a debit (or credit, I guess) card when entering and when leaving.
which is pretty convenient when the high speed train you're on, that you've chosen precisely because it stopped at the same station as your next train, announces that they are stopping at another train station in a different part of Milan (~15 minutes by metro from the right station) and they tell you you can continue your journey “with the first useful train” (if you can find one)
thankfully the disruption had affected most trains, and my second one was also late, so I could catch it easily :D

che è comodo quando l'alta velocità su cui sei, che hai scelto apposta perché fermava alla stessa stazione del treno successivo che devi prendere, annuncia che stavolta fermeranno ad una fermata diversa (a ~15 minuti di metrò da quella giusta) e che puoi continuare il tuo viaggio “a bordo dei primi treni utili” (se riesci a trovarne)
per fortuna i problemi coinvolgevano anche gli altri treni, anche il secondo era in ritardo e son riuscita a prenderlo facilmente :D

English Paper Piecing, Done Wrong

For quite some time, I have been thinking about trying a bit of patchwork, and English Paper Piecing looked like a technique suited to my tastes, with the handsewing involved and the fact of having a paper pattern of sort and everything.
The problem is, most of the scraps of fabric I get from my sewing aren’t really suitable for quilting, with a lot of them being either too black and too thick or too white and too thin.
On the other hand, my partner wears polo shirts at work, and while I try to mend the holes that form, after a while the edges get worn, and they just are no longer suitable for the office, even with some creative mending, and they get downgraded to home wear. But then more office shirts need to be bought, and the home ones accumulate, and there is only so much room for polo shirts in the house, and the worst ones end up in my creative reuse pile.
Some parts are worn out and they will end up as cabbage stuffing for things, but some are still in decent enough conditions and could be used as fabric.
But surely, for English Paper Piecing you’d need woven fabric, not knit, even if it’s the dense piqué used in polo shirts, right? Especially if it’s your first attempt at the technique, right?
Well, probably it wouldn’t work with complex shapes, but what about some 5-ish cm tall Standard Compliant bestagon? So I printed out some hexagons on thick paper, printed some bigger hexagons with sewing allowance as a cutting aid, found two shirts in the least me colours I could find (and one in grey because it was the best match for the other two) and decided to sacrifice them for the experiment.
And as long as the paper was still in the pieces, the work went nicely, so I persevered while trying to postpone the Moment of Truth.
After a while I measured things out and saw that I could squeeze a 6.5 × 7 hexagon pattern into something resembling a square that was a multiple of the 2.5 cm square on the back of my Piecepack tiles, and decided to go for another Standard for the back (because of course I wasn’t going to buy new fabric for lining the work).
I kept the paper in the pieces until both sides were ready, and used it to sew them right sides together, leaving the usual opening in the middle of one side.
Then I pressed, removed the paper, turned everything inside out, pressed again and. It worked!
The hexagons look like hexagons, the squares look like squares, the whole thing feels soft and drapey, but structurally sound. And it’s a bit lumpy, but not enough to cause issues when using it as a soft surface to put over a noisy wooden table to throw dice on.
I considered adding some lightweight batting in the middle, but there was really no need for it, and wondered about how to quilt the piece in a way that worked with the patterns on the two sides, but for something this small it wasn’t really required.
However, I decided to add a buttonhole stitch border on all edges, to close the opening I had left and to reinforce especially the small triangles on the hexagons side, as those had a smaller sewing allowance and could use it.
And of course, the 11 × 11 squares side wasn’t completely an accident, but part of A Plan.
For this project there isn’t really a pattern, but I did publish the files I used to print the paper pieceseven if they were pretty trivial.
And there are more polo shirts in that pile, and while they won’t be suitable for anything complex, maybe I could try some rhombs, or even kites and darts?

Meanwhile, it's been a while since my last thread on crafting.
I've picked back up #knitting a shawl from *very fine* yarn that I started in 2022, when it looked like this:
and now looks exactly the same, but *a lot more*.
Now I have written down a plan and I think I can finish it by the end of September: it's longer than the usual time before I get bored with it and move to something else, but now that I can actually see the end I really want to do it!
(right now I have picked up a 8 days buffer, so there is hope)
Also, I've kept going on with the 16th century hemd inspired shirt I started (check notes 3 months ago: it's structurally done, I need to finish the bottom hem and the smocking at the sleeves, and then sort out buttons, so I hope that one too will be finished by the end of September, and then I can start some other project I have in the queue!

the backpack is at a stage where I have to think, and today I'm not really able to think, and also it's somewhat heavy sewing, and sometimes I'd prefer to do something lighter, so my plan was to have a second project to alternate it with.

what about dealing with 4.5 meters of lightweight fabric, hemming all of it and then bringing it down to 36ish cm? That's more like it :D
I've decided to make a shirt by following the instructions for a 16th century hemd, except in cotton voile, and a bit shorter so that I can tuck it into my jeans if I want.

Also, in a Pile of things I was supposed to be clearing I've found an attempt at English Paper Piecing that only needed me to remove the paper bits, turn it inside out and sew it shut, and I've just finished the paper bits removal.

also, I've decided to sew a buttonhole stitch reinforcement all around the English Paper Piecing mat, so it's no longer 10 minutes and it's done, but I hope to finish it in the next few days too.

11/12 dello scialle finiti! Per caso ho calcolato dei nuovi obiettivi per avere qualcosa su cui mettere dei segni di spunta mentre faccio le ultime 20 righe o giù di lì? cosa ve lo fa pensare?
E ho anche deciso di rinforzare il bordo del tappetino in English Paper Piecing con dei punti occhiello, quindi non bastano più 10 minuti per finirlo,ma spero in questi giorni di finire anche quello.
The reinforcement around the mat has been done, the mat has been photographed (there will be a blog post) and put away in its final place (the gaming cupboard).
The shawl is progressing slowly but steady, according to the plan.
And half of the hem of the hemd has been done, and one of the sleeves is almost smocked.
*And* my temporary desktop is free of clutter and ready to be replaced with the real one!

La cucitura di rinforzo del tappetino è finita, l'ho fotografato (ci sarà un post sul blog) e messo al suo posto definitivo (il mobiletto dei giuochi).
Lo scialle prosegue lento ma costante, secondo i piani.
E metà dell'orlo della camicia è fatto, e anche lo smocking su una delle maniche.
*E* la mia scrivania provvisoria è stata liberata, pronta per essere sostituita con la scrivania vera!
(sì, sto facendo le ferie estive, non sto anche lavorando in questi giorni)

(strictly speaking, 63/64 of the lace part, then I have 5 rows of garter stitch border, but I didn't bother counting those when calculating the milestones)
I think I can safely say that I may finish it at least one week earlier than expected, maybe a bit more?
At least the knitting: I may have to block it outdoors, and thus I fully expect that when I'll be ready to do so we will have at the very least a full month of rain :D

(volendo essere pignoli 63/64 della parte lavorata, poi ci sono 5 righte di bordo a punto legaccio, ma quelli non li ho contati quando calcolavo gli obiettivi)
Credo di potermi azzardare a dire che lo finirò almeno una settimana prima del previsto, magari anche qualcosina di più?
Almeno il lavoro ai ferri: è possibile che io lo debba bloccare all'aperto, e quindi sono sicura che quando sarò pronta per farlo ci sarà almeno un mese di pioggia continua :D

I'm afraid that our printer is reaching the end of its life, and I'm considering buying a new one: I believe that the recommendation for printers that print and don't try to trick you into subscriptions is Brother, and the usual shops I buy these things from either don't have them, or they are huge multifunction ones (and they are out of stock anyway).
do you have recommendations for ships with a website to buy printers from, ideally in it or at least in eu?
(I'm looking for a colour laser, with ethernet)

in reply to Lars Wirzenius • •@Lars Wirzenius yeah, they satisfy the “in EU” requirement, but I suspect that shipping for something as heavy as a printer would be somewhat unreasonable.
I've checked one of the shops and they don't have any Canon model either, but I still have to check the other places, that's useful to know.

which is why it's definitely going to be laser and not inkjet :)

però erano anche più capienti di quelli della Samsung, quindi il costo copia non era così drammatico, e col modo in cui tipicamente stampo tendevano a durare un bel po' di tempo, facevo ampiamente in tempo a ripagare il mutuo prima del toner successivo :D

Certo, c'è sempre quella fastidiosa cosa del "non hai il giallo, non puoi stampare in bianco e nero" ma quello credo sia inevitabile ormai

non ho ancora guardato le catene tipo mediaword, a quelle come ultima spiaggia posso abbassarmi, ma amazon proprio no
(prima ancora però devo andare a fare un giro nel negozio dove ho comprato l'ultima stampante, ma uff, lì bisogna andare di persona, e si fa fatica :D )
(e se non c'è l'inchiostro giallo non possono stampare i disegni traccianti, quindi ovvio che non possano stampare neanche il bianco e nero :D )

tipicamente disegnati nel tardo pomeriggio, stampati alla sera, quando i negozi sono chiusi, in modo da riuscire a tagliare e incollare i pezzi prima della mattina dopo, quando riesco a tagliare la stoffa prima del lavoro.
Inseririci un viaggio in copisteria in orario di apertura fa saltare tutto quanto.
(e non ho un posto dove mettere un proiettore fisso sopra al tavolo da taglio, anche perché non ho un tavolo da taglio)

Per i cartamodelli ci vorrebbe un plotter che li disegni direttamente sulla stoffa… magari con una testa da taglio così non servirebbero neppure le forbici.

e che funzioni anche su pezzi di forma irregolare, per quando si stanno tagliando cose nuove dagli avanzi di un progetto vecchio
e deve essere abbastanza largo per tagliare almeno la stoffa alta 160 cm (ma spesso mi capita di lavorare con stoffe alte 240 cm, altrimenti detti “copripiumoni dell'ikea”)
e non ho spazio neanche per un tavolo da taglio dedicato, dove ce la metto una cosa così? :D
