It's blowing my mind that Final Fantasy, one of the most Japanese of 'Japanese Role Playing Games' was programmed by Iranian-born Nasir Gebelli, who left Iran to avoid the 1979 revolution.
Studied programming in the US, and did notable work on the Apple II before being recommended to Square.
He programmed the first three Final Fantasy games and also Secret Of Mana.

CERN just managed to transport antimatter via truck, and people are asking what happens if it gets into an accident. the answer is... a car accident.
the energy equivalence of antimatter is huge — 10¹⁷J/kg, but the amount is tiny — 92 protons. it's so tiny that if i placed all 92 in your hand, the destruction and release of energy would feel less warm than mere sunlight, by a factor of at least a few thousands.
i'd be more worried about the 2-ton magnetic containment machine in that truck.

@robparsons It won't, any more than the Internet went away when the Internet bubble burst.
Generative AI will spend some time as a punchline, and then it'll come back, somewhat tamed by the bubble, so people will be more likely to use it where it makes sense, and not try to shove it into everything.

they've always been out of my grasp due to a reliance on Windows and Linux. Having a keyboard without a numpad has really finished it.

I'm just happy to see uppercase letters and a period at the end of a sentence.
👍

Technically your em-dashes are wrong. em-dashes are generally not meant to be surrounded by spaces—unlike en-dashes, which the Germans use for speaking their German language – a truly marvelous one, probably.
Practically, have fun! Rules for language don't matter.
By German typography rules, indeed, en-dash with spaces around it is.
I also can confirm that most books do follow that standard.
Germans who write emails or documents though very frequently use the em-dash with spaces around it, or just a single dash and don't care (in my case, I might use it more if it were more convenient to type, like the --- alias most word processors have).
@divVerent You confused me a little here, but fair enough. I was wondering about your point on *speaking* German, because I don't tend to speak dashes.
So I thought you meant speech/quotation marks. I've encountered German text that used en or em dashes here as well, but that's a fairly rare thing.

two nights ago I woke up with the idea that once in a while The Magic calls a very powerful muggleborn to become a pureblood, a sort of first of their name situation; after the call this requires a ritual that requires also a pureblood and results in the two being married.
After the war the Magic calls Hermione, Lucius Malfoy finds out about it, kidnaps Hermione, brings her to the Malfoy sacred grove or something. Draco has been summoned there, arrives, realizes what's happening, tries to run away, gets full-body-bound too, and the ritual is performed.
They find themselves warded in a very newlywed themed wing of Malfoy Manor, with the ability to have visitors, and to receive most of what they want through the house elf (including books from the Malfoy library), but unable to leave, they start cooperating to find a way to undo the ritual.
Narcissa didn't know anything, and allies with them.
For some reason, both Draco and Narcissa's first though is that Hermione should have had the chance to marry Neville, since he's suitably pureblood and a friend. Nobody considers Ron worthy of Hermione :D

Forse sta meglio.🤞

Just to be clear
a hiking outfit is first and foremost a *practical* garment, as evident from the fact that the skirt is not supported over a bustle but just a bit of padding
so if I'm making a matching hat it's perfectly reasonable to add earflaps to it, even if it's something that is vaguely shaped like a top hat, right?
#sewing #historicalSewing #theJaegermonsterSchoolOfMillinery
I've cut the pattern and started sewing and I have to say that it's not exactly a top hat, it's significantly shorter than that (something I'm tankful for, since sewing it is already unwieldy as is :) )
But is has all of the parts of a top hat, and I'm following instructions that could, with a wider crown side, result in a top hat (the milliner version in fabric over a buckram and wire structure, not the hatmaker version in mercury-treated felt)
and I've shamelessly cut earflaps for it.
meanwhile, life has happened, and progress on the hat has been slow, but
a) there *was* progress
b) yesterday I spilled blood on it (luckily on the buckram, and it won't be seen
c) I was starting to see the finished shape of the hat
and then I had to unpick all of the work from the last half an hour or so, because I am an idiot and didn't mark properly the center front and back and sides.
a) è andato avanti

For my birthday, I’ve bought myself a fancy new expensive1fountain pen.
Such a fancy pen, of course requires a suitable case: I couldn’t use the failed prototype of a case I’ve been keeping my Preppys in, so I had to get out the nice vegetable tanned leather… Yeah, nope, I don’t have that (yet). I got out the latex and cardboard material that is sold as a (cheaper) leather substitute, doesn’t look like leather at all, but is quite nice (and easy) to work with. The project is not vegan anyway, because I used waxed linen thread, waxing it myself with a lot of very nicely smelling beeswax.
I got the measurements2 from the less failed prototype where I keep my desktop pens, and this time I made a proper pattern I could share online, under the usual Free Culture license.
From the width of the material I could conveniently cut two cases, so that’s what I did, started sewing the first one, realized that I got the order of stitching wrong, and also that if I used light blue thread instead of the black one it would look nice, and be easier to see in the pictures for the published pattern, started sewing the second one, and kept alternating between the two, depending on the availability of light for taking pictures.
One of the two took the place of my desktop one, where I had one more pen than slots, and one of the old prototypes was moved to keep my bedside pen, and the other new case was used for the new pen in my handbag, together with a Preppy, and now I have a free slot and you can see how this is going to go wrong, right? :D

I consider writing software a kind of craftsmanship. It's important to me to think through what I build, to consciously make design decisions based on knowledge and the existing problem space. To understand why things work (or not!) and be able to solve problems as they come up. To keep things readable, understandable, maintainable.
In the end, I want to be proud of what *I* build.

The amount I say "Just because it works doesn't mean it's right."
Functionality, maintainability, efficiency, elegance, scalability, portability, development cost, development time.
Looks like the MBA crowd has noticed they can use tools to affect one or two variables, and since they don't understand the others, those must not matter.
We'll be cleaning this mess up for decades.
@PhilSalkie and part of maintainability is managing of complexity (the accidental type, where we as devs have control), and with gen AI this is hard (if not impossible) to control. This defers maintenance costs, which as we all know (right?) increases them, and also makes the whole system harder (sometimes impossible) to change.
This model only makes sense if the software being shipped is short-lived/throw-away, a model fit for VC-backed companies designed to be acquired.
@sotolf that’s probably what they told the first person who refused to write assembly code and instead invented a higher-level language.
The resistance is futile, and the writing is on the wall. I understand very well where the limitations of the statistical machines are, and try to play with them to my advantage. Nothing more nothing less.
I’m not trying to convince anyone that that’s the right way to go - only that there other ways to fulfill your life creatively than programs.
@preslavrachev @sotolf I'm not sure why you keep thinking my statement was about scratching a creative itch of all things.
And the comparison to the move from assembly to higher-level languages is one of apples and oranges. A compiler is deterministic. An LLM *by design* is not.
But as I already said elsewhere, you do you.
I’ve been writing code for 25 years. Allow me to disagree. While I love building things, programming is just a tool for achieving a goal, not the end goal in and of itself. While I’m meticulous about what comes out as a final product, I don’t care anymore if it’s written by me, by a colleague, or by a machine, as long as it meets my strict criteria.
If you’re looking for an authentic form of expression, try creative writing. This is one area I’d be ashamed of delegating entirely to AI

(Unless you turn the comments off, first)
I was thinking about this kind of stuff today when I saw there was an "intel-microcode" update for my computer. My computer is pretty old now, and it seems to work fine. So I wonder what the update is about. And it crosses my mind that the political situation in the USA might mean companies are pressured into doing things they wouldn't have done in the past...
That said, I'll probably install the update. I think it unlikely to be malicious. But this forced-trust really isn't a great way for things to work.

Canada has serious ports that are, well, kinda up-north-ish. In order to get ships in to those ports, which include some significant manufacturing and other supplies, one must use a kind of ship called an icebreaker.
Icebreakers are, basically, a big-assed razorblade at the prow, and big-assed engines at the stern.
Being an icebreaker captain is one of the most stressful jobs you can imagine.
You're working in harsh weather. You can't see shit. You have these client ships that are very slow and very large and very expensive. If you even *touch* one of the client ships, that's $3m, minimum, instantly.
An icebreaker would go right through an oil tanker, and come out the other side of it with a broken radar antenna, covered in oil.
And the icebreaker runs in front of the client breaking ice so it can get where it's going.
There are three main modern tools you can use, versus the old days: You have a radar system, you have a speed log, and you have GPS.
All of those tools have serial outputs on them, good ol' RS-232.
So here was the concept: take a PC and make a custom "ice breaking" UI, taking input from the three devices, and rendering it in such a fashion that the icebreaker skipper could get all the info in one place.
And I was sub-contracted to do that. It was about a six month long project. I wrote an entire windowing system on top of DOS to use VGA to show the display.
(I'm a good fucking programmer, and that's not the only time I've written a graphical UI from scratch.)
And. A comical note: about six weeks before the project was due, my hard drive died. And. My backup drive died.
All I had were some two-month old printouts.
So, for my juniors, when I tell you "typing is not the bottleneck", I know what I'm fucking talking about.
It took me a couple of weeks to re-create 4 months worth of work. If I had to bet, I'd bet my second edition was *better* than the edition I lost.
So we come down to the day, and I am ready.
First, I had to go before the admiral's board of the Canadian Coast Guard and give a demo.
*Second* comical note: the fucking app froze in the middle of the demo, and w/o in any way acknowledging this, I used it as an opportunity to demonstrate that even if we lost power, the app would restart correctly.
Yep. That's right. I rebooted the computer and startup.bat did its magic.
Anyway, the admiral's board is like, "cool, let's try it in the field."
So I fly to Newfoundland, and I get on an actual icebreaker ship.
Oh my people, it was so fucking cool. Icebreakers aren't gigantic, like container ships or tanker ships, but they're *big*, just the same.
And the Canadian Coast Guard is a commercial service, not a military one, so even tho they spend months at sea, they take very good care of their sailors, so, broadly speaking, the place was all modern cons.
(You still have to take navy showers, but other than that.)
Now. I was afraid of sea sickness. I'd been on fishing trips on the open ocean, and had been very sick. So I wore a patch.
You may not know this, but there are still Royal Navy traditions practiced aboard ships.
One of the important ones: there's always a comedy officer. Someone whose job it is to be funny, to make sailors smile.
You think that's silly, but sometimes these people are on board these ships for a *year*. It is important that they be amused.
And the other Royal Navy tradition: Captains are inviolate commanders, at all times in all settings. They present "serious". They eat and drink separately from the crew. They have only three or four other officers that they ever get to, comparatively, relax with.
So, you have a comedy officer, and you have a captain, and the captain simply looks the other way when the comedy officer is up to their hijinks.
He *knows* the hijinks. He *sees* the hijinks. But he pretends not to.
I'm up on the bridge, with my PC, connected to my three devices, and we're getting close to the ice.
Comedy officer comes up to the bridge, and *he* also has a sea-sickness patch.
Kids, the icebreaker, as I said, is not tiny. There's no tossing about in the waves. You do not need a seasickness patch.
Then he comes back an hour later, and now he's got *two* patches.
An hour later, he's got *four* patches.
Then he comes to the bridge and his whole jaw is covered with them.
The captain is totally ignoring this guy. He's not even spozed to be on the bridge, let alone covered in little patches (just circular bandaids, actually). But the rest of the crew is laughing their ass off.
And it's *funny*.
I mean, yeah, I was embarrassed, but, whatever, I got it. I took off my stupid patch.
We're getting to the ice, and getting to the ice is so amazingly cool, I didn't even mind the comedy officer making me the butt of the joke.
Now we're in the ice. We have a convoy of 3 container ships behind us.
If you stand at the stern, you can see those huge twin engines throwing 4-meter chunks of ice up into the air.
And I have my PC. And it has its three devices feeding my slick-assed custom icebreaker display. "I'm from the government and I'm here to help."
Here's the thing. Three devices, innit:
1) The GPS works but is spotty, cuz you're in a constant storm.
2) The speed log is basically a vent on the bottom of the hull, measuring the water passing by. But the ice is rushing under the bottom of the hull, and it jams the vent.
3) The radar tracks the target, but the target is so close it might just as well be the icebreaker itself, and the tracker gradually creeps on to the icebreaker's own ass.
So my display, which is accurately showing the data, is like:
We're going slower than a Toronto pub crawl. No, wait! We're going faster than the speed of light!
We're somewhere in Mexico. No, wait! We are probably in Kansas.
The client ship is going the exact same speed at the exact same location as us! No wait. It *is* us. No wait, it's *ramming* us at full speed!!
Man, I had some fails in my time, but this one wasn't just a fail, it was fucking *embarrassing*.
"Build a special custom icebreaking display using the hardware on the ship, it'll be brilliant!"
The hardware doesn't work in the ice. Any actual icebreaker captain could have told me -- us -- that, had we -- they -- ever actually consulted one.

I don't care what tools you use. Whether your use is ethical or not is not my business, it's yours, and it is your conscience you'll have to clear. I used to be a gatekeeping elitist prick who judged people who used software I disliked. I try not to be one anymore.
But - and this is a very, very big but - if the tools you use only exist because they're scraping and DDoSing the entire internet, and the cost of their existence is externalized to me, and everyone else running a website?
Then I will care, and I will call you out on your bullshit if you try to present yourself as an ally, while making excuses for the damage these things cause.
This is not about ethics. This is not about copyright, or rights in general. This is about externalizing costs to people who do not deserve this level of abuse, and then denying their complaints.

Yes, the #EU has a lot of regulations.
But remember that thanks to those regulations you can use a single USB-C cable that can charge anything, rather than 10 different connectors and adapters as it was common until 10-15 years ago.
Remember that it’s thanks to those regulations if you no longer have to pay eye watering roaming fees for calls and data when you travel to other EU countries, as it was common until 5-10 years ago.
Remember that it’s thanks to those regulations if big tech has at least some constraints onto what it can do with your data and how much choice you have as a customer.
Remember that it’s thanks to those regulations if you, as a EU citizen, can benefit from the services of any other embassy of any other EU country if stranded abroad.
Those who try to depict the EU as a bureaucratic hell worth dismantling are those who hate the impact that its laws have on their freedom of exploiting markets, exploiting customers or living out of rent money.
Or those who hate the combined economic and political power of a united Europe with a single market because it threatens their national interests, and they’d rather exert their leverage with a bunch of divided and weaker countries instead.
Europe isn’t perfect and a lot can be improved. But those who call for its demise DO NOT talk in your interests.

@cstross mmm, yes, I used to have one cable, a lightning cable, and it did everything. Now I have a cupboard full of USB-C cables. Some do 100W, some don’t, some do display port alt mode.
Did you know it’s possible to get a USB-C cable that only does USB2? I didn’t, until I only got USB2 speeds on my SSD.
Calling USB-C a standard is like calling all 4 legged animals dogs.
@cstross And I do get that, but I think this is a case of careful what you wish for. Lots of battery powered electronics now come with a USB-C charge cable that you want to throw in the bin, because it will get mixed up with all your other cables and you will use it and spend 30 minutes wondering why your device is slow/doesn't work. Of particular joy to those performing tech support for parents.
Apple tried to stop shipping cables with everything, and people got pissed about that too.
those regulations also include other perks like:
- Prices you see in the store or online are final (no hidden fees).
- You get European movies and content on Netflix and other platforms
- When you order something, you get info when it will be delivered
- When you buy food, you know it’s safe to eat
- 2 years of free warranty for gadgets and electronics
- Your kid can go to school or get a degree regardless of your financial situation
… and that’s just scratching the surface
@NicksWorld
I'm not sure that's a good analogy.
The EU is perhaps more like a benevolent uncle who keeps you safe and looks after you from a distance.
Oh how I wish we were still European here in the UK!
@NicksWorld @MikeFromLFE
As an American, I'm jealous of that willingness to reign in the worst behaviors society can create.
If you think the EU's regulations are excessivly strict, I can promise you the reality of an unregulated hellscape of amoral predatory rent seeking is far worse.
@NicksWorld @MikeFromLFE Not really true. Enforcement of regulations is largely down to member states not the EU*, which has fewer employees (about 32,000) than some medium sized city councils. It's sometimes the case that national political factors influence the enforcement of regulations delegated to member states. Eg, Ireland is generally regarded as being soft on lawbreaking by US big tech companies bc of heavy US presence
*though the EU has a Court of Justice that can be appealed to
They're trying, at least...
But those 10 different connectors and adapters are still 10 different cables, they just all have usb-c plugs on now so you can't see the difference anymore.
Example: The multi-port 140W usb-c charger I bought last year came with a cable that would only charge at 10W. Different but identical looking cable, 60W.
Example: My Noco (so, not some Ali special) battery booster has a usb-c charging port, but only charges at the typical 7W of a micro-usb connection.
Because of EU regulation, we don't live a hellhole country like the USA.
If European capitalists were allowed to, they would exploit and abuse us the same way.
One might point out that the chinese were first in mandating micro-USB for phones. Then EU came along mandating USB-C.
Also, one may acknowledge the (very small) benefits like phone connectors and roaming, larger benefits like climate policies (impotent, but still), and more, and still think that the downsides of bureaucracy, bad democracy deficit and ingrained, foundational neoliberalism equals net negative.
One might also point to small things like data roaming or consumer protection stuff like @iamkonstantin lists, and ask: which of these would likely have passed even without an EU? Most, I think.
Some things like enforcing standards like USB-C, *could* have happened without EU, but EU makes it more likely.

I'm currently furious about #Brexit because I learned that the EU has a unified process for Small Claims Court.
I'm being stiffed on a holiday-related deposit by a Greek company and I need to hire lawyers to submit the claim in Greece on my behalf instead of being able to file it in the UK.
I'm a federalist, but even I have to recognise the EU is beyond reform, Europe needs a post-EU, federal future.
A monetary union lacking fiscal and investment structures means a structurally dysfunctional EU. A EU Commission that cannot be held responsible by it's constituents is structurally dysfunctional. A democratically elected EU parliament that can't draft laws is structurally dysfunctional. The Euro being a low-value Deutsche Mark, pushing Southern, deficit nations like Italy into endless austerity (causing the rise of populism), while keeping German exports strong, is structurally dysfunctional. Having strict budget deficit rules which cause perpetual austerity after periods of economic crisis, yet loosening those deficit rules only for military spending, is structurally dysfunctional.
No amount of USB-C and no roaming fees will cover the fact that the EU is at an impasse, and the current Brussels political class is invested in the status quo, that will lead to the unravelling of the Euro and the EU itself.
@mattesilver
Nah, the push to China was thanks to logistics getting a lot cheaper thanks to invention of cargo containers in the 1970s, and GATT morphing into WTO in 1995.
Otherwise, hardware would still be made in USA (it isn't).
As for software, it's still being made in Europe (as it's made everywhere), but USA can dominate thanks to a large internal market and leveraging their earlier dominance with mainframes. (IBM, arpanet, etc.)

True, but I'm not looking forward to the regulations when right wingers are in charge.
I fear massive power concentration, even if it had some positive outcomes up to now. The EU can change and then it still affects the whole slew of countries.
Also the EU is not very democratic AFAIK.
@EdBruce In theory there are penalties etc but in general the EU seems to avoid this route. Although they did withdraw lots of money from Poland after the anti-lgbt zones were formed.
Do remember that the EU parliament is voted for so there are large numbers of right wing and even fascist in the parliament. We daily fight these people to maintain some kind of liberal democracy. Given a chance many of these people would dismantle the EU.
One of the positive things to come out of Brexit was that other nations saw the horrific economic fallout and in recent polls the EU is more supported than ever. So thanks Britain, your sacrifice is noted.

Also due to these regulations I cannot buy antibiotic ointment when the Czech regime is depriving me of healthcare when I have an infected eczema and am afraid it will produce sepsis and I die, because antibiotic ointment ran out and when I call a dermatologist and tell I need it urgently she gives me an appointment 4 months (!!!) in the future!
In a corrupt developing 3rd world dictatorship Cambodia it is possible to buy antibiotic ointments without prescription and also dermatologist wait there is only 7-10 days, not 4 months.
I feel

Its also those regulations that enforce VIOLENT borders

"Brexit Benefits" include those roaming fees coming back.
Before we left the EU the fees weren't just scrapped for EU countries, but also for select non-EU countries, e.g. the USA. Now most providers have roaming fees for all of them, the ones that don't still have more restrictions on where you can roam without those extra fees

> But remember that thanks to those regulations you can use a single USB-C cable that can charge anything
buddy there's like a dozen different USB-C cables with different capabilities and even devices with USB-C ports that can't be charged with normal USB-C cables+chargers unless it's a dumb USB-A on the other end which guarantees that it only uses 5v and no PD negotiation required
and then there's the devices where it actually matters if you actually plug the USB-C cable in "upside down" or not because not all devices have all the pins on both sides
don't build your enthusiasm up for the EU's over-regulation on a such a silly lie
@feld yes, I’m aware of the different types of USB-C conventions out there. Also when it comes to different current/power requirements.
But I see it from the perspective of someone who believed it to be impossible 10 years ago to even be able to plug the same thing into a laptop, a phone or a headphone.
Even being able to plug the same thing into different laptops was unthinkable. I had a stash of “universal” power cords with at least 15 different barrel connectors, and 5 different addons to adjust for different voltage and current requirements.
And let’s not talk of smaller devices using combinations of mini USB, micro USB, USB-A and other exotic variants (a problem that still affects HDMI btw).
Of course the USB-C standard is still fragmented and confusing, and a lot of work must still be done, but we’re in a state that is light years ahead of where we were a decade ago.
I always find it wrily funny when euroskeptics talk about "bureaucrats in Brussels imposing rules".
Er.... no
Countries who are in the EU send representatives to Brussels. That's where our representatives get together, talk to each other, reach a consensus and agree on the rules that we will all follow. Every country in the EU is taking part in that decision making process. We make our rules together. So those who then refuse to be team members? They're the arseholes.
Regulation and bureaucracy are conflict management tools.
Their extent is determined by the complexity of the society.
Eliminating both without reducing underlying complexity will just bring you unmanaged conflicts and more decisions determined by relative strength.
important to note that overregulation was a complaint of the Brexshiteers. Peoples lives were being ruined by "red tape", and Brexshit would fix it!!
But the regulations they overturned once they left were all of a type.
Consumer protection from scams and frauds.
Environmental protection from corporate malfeasance.
Consumer protection from overreaching corporate control of public spaces.
Anything which helped make life a little more bearable was first destroyed. The current state of the UK shows the results, with life expectancy plunging, education levels declining, insolvency and pollution skyrocketing.
the "no roaming fees" is great, but remember that for years before that, the EU mandated maximum roaming rates, which slowly went down (and (IIRC) the 60€/month max roaming fee).
It's been 20 years since people experienced real unregulated roaming in the EU

At this point, open-source development itself is being DDoS'ed by LLMs and their human users.
At the risk of being a bit gross: this is the software development version of peeing in the pool. If *one* person does it, it's gross but will probably go unnoticed. However, at this point, it's like having 100 people all lined up on the side of the pool peeing into it in unison. I don't really want to swim in that, do you? And now they've started eyeing the punchbowl and watercoolers too. #AI #AIslop #LLMs

lugano

@kappazeta @thunderpussycat dimenticavo: trenord.it/linee-e-orari/circo…
@valhalla
