so, apparently it was a thing already in the 9th century?

“Aside from Christian literature and Biblical commentary, Sedulius held a passion for alcoholic beverages, especially beer. Sedulius liked the drink so much that he even wrote a lament to a small drought titled Nunc Viridant Segetes, or Drought in Spring. The poem ends with the line "Muse, ask our good father bishop: when do we drink again?"”

A few days ago we helped a friend disassemble an old thinkpad to refresh the thermal paste and clean around a bit: everything went fine, but removing the screws from the vga port was quite an hassle.

So yesterday we just received (among other things) an hex socket bit in the right size to disassemble the vga port of old thinkpads, suitable for my handbag screwdriver set.

Anybody else around here needs help to disassemble an old thinkpad? :D

"Okay. Where's the agreement it refers to?"

"Oh, we don't have that part. Just sign it."

How many times have you gone through this scenario? It's a structural trick to make you into the Bad Guy for rudely insisting on seeing, let alone having a copy, of legally-binding documents you are being asked to sign.

Today, I was that Bad Guy. I still feel rattled. And it's still not resolved. Supposedly, they will email me something.

I am really, really tired of this BS.

@Space Catitude 🚀 here usually you do get access to the document, *after* you ask.

Except that now they have started to use so-called “digital” signatures, where they give you a tablet and a pen to sign with, on a screen that only shows the signature space of the document you're signing, so you don't have any way to see that it's the same document that they gave you to read.

1/ The original post replies to a rant I had about artist pricing earlier aren't the place to discuss this, but I have one bit of advice for anyone working with an org who suddenly ask you to do it cheaper:

(Nuance in the next post)

If an org comes to you and asks for a piece of work to be done cheaper, AND YOU THINK THEY'RE STILL WORTH YOUR TIME AND NOT TAKING THE PISS try this:

"Hi there, for £X, I can't deliver our original agreement, but I can do this..."

Reasons why in the next post.

3/ And going, "this is what you can have for X" helps the person you're dealing with because they can then go back to Finance and say the same thing.

It's important, because then nobody can say it was achievable at the other budget and the person simply didn't try hard enough.

Likewise, for anyone else in the same sort of job as me, for the love of fuck, do the same thing.

If you had less money, you'd take things out of your basket.

So my local library's makerspace offered a free event where they brought in a bunch of old tower computers, printers, game consoles, etc., - laid out a bunch of iFixit toolkits - and let everyone (kids and adults alike) take everything apart!!!

One kid was hesitant because they didn't want to break anything and the library staff were like, none of it works. We're recycling and throwing everything out afterwards! Go hog wild, you won't get in trouble! You're meant to break it and take it apart!

The kid was absolutely enthusiastic and went to town!

I got to be a kid again and go into detail about all the computer parts and what each of the hardware did. It was awesome watching my children and other kids and adults interact, share tools, show off what they found.

I spoke with the organizer afterwards and asked if this was a regular thing and he said that he didn't have enough old equipment to make it regular. I laughed and said all of my friends have CLOSETS FULL OF THIS STUFF and the idea of giving it to a bunch of kids and adults to play with would bring joy and meaning to their life, lol!

I gave him the time to meet up with @fxbghackers and told him to make a community announcement about needing old electronics for donation to take apart and he'd get truck loads.

Just another way community helps each other out. This is post scarcity education.

Okay, people. When you're writing out a word, be that a swear word, or a word that could be triggering for some, or even just a word you find generally uncomfortable to write. Please do not use alternative characters to attempt to censor it. It makes it much more complicated to read, it disrupts people who potentially want to filter out that word from social media, and in the worst cases it can be confusing to people. I've had a couple times where people replaced letters with numbers, or non-qwerty characters to attempt to censor a word, and their attempt made me utterly confused by my screen reader's output. Please just write the actual word in its uncensored entirety. It is not bad and will help people know what you mean, and in some cases will make it easier for people to filter out the content that triggers them or that they don't want to see. Thanks

Things I will never stop doing: translating Elfenbeinschwarz as Elvish bones black, and expect it to be extracted from real bones from real elves.

Now, I do worry a bit about the fact that elves are supposed to be immortal unless killed, so extracting said bones would probably require violent death, but they are going to the Halls of Mandos and then reincarnate in a new body, so they are going to eventually be ok? maybe?

ok, maybe it's better if they extract the pigment from random inanimate carbon sources :D

Non so come spiegarlo.

La parola corretta in HochDeutsch e':

ElfenknochenSchwarz

Puoi metterci Bein?

in reply to Amiga Unicorn

in reply to Amiga Unicorn

Proviamo a riassumere.

Stai dicendo "nero come l'avorio".

in reply to Amiga Unicorn

in practice, if @Diego Roversi has opened the first door with his key, and I'm trying to open the second door my brain isn't able to realize it's supposed to give the hand the order to switch to the next key :D

I do not, repeat not, recommend walking around with a sledge hammer or a battering ram for those times when door locks are stubborn. It's so easily misunderstood by other people.

The cat is nice but single boosts don't do anything in terms of federation :)

Avery (She/Her) It made 102+ people see that cat and potentially follow the poster.

Introduction post is fine and all, but when you pay the cat tax it's a different game.

Dear paintingverse,

when I decided I wanted to try #painting with #acrylics I bought a few 20 ml tubes, because I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a new hobby, even if the price per liter was significantly higher, and I expected to only paint on A6 / postcard size, like I do with watercolours. They weren't metal tubes like I was used to in the 1800s :D but transparent plastic.

And then I got into myself some ideas on a bigger scale, and now I'm buying *huge*¹ 120 ml tubes. However I've found that the smaller tubes are quite convenient to use when painting on small scale on a cramped desktop, which is something I'm not planning to stop doing.

Does anybody have any experience with refilling smaller plastic paint tubes from of bigger ones? Is it even doable? If it is, I'd expect it's better to use the same brand/line/colour of paint, and possibly to avoid a complete refill, and only doing limited amounts at a time, to prevent wastage in case the biocides fail at their work and there is spoilage.

Also, I'm thinking I could either try to refill from the opening, or cut the seal at the bottom and easily refill from there, but then I'd need a solution to close it back in a way that doesn't let air in.

I guess that the alternative would be to buy empty metal tubes of the kind used by people who make their own paints, but that's too easy, right?

¹ I know :D

Would syringes our eyedroppers work, or is the paint too thick for that?

very minor injury, whining, no pictures

Today I need to do things that require quite a bit of washing of hands.

I have a big papercut on the base of my thumb.

The. Pain.

(and I don't even remember how it happened)

modern programming is like,

"if you're using bongo.rs to parse http headers, you will need to also install bepis to get buffered read support. but please note that bepis switched to using sasquatch for parallel tokenization as of version 0.0.67, so you will need the bongo-sasquatch extension crate as well."

old-time programming is like,

"i made a typo in this function in 1993. theo de raadt got so angry he punched a wall when he saw it. for ABI compatibility reasons, we shan't fix the typo."
