From this little notebook I have in my lap, I can get high resolution photos of deep space, or scans of mosaic work done in pompeii 2000 years ago, or watch a silent film made in mexico in 1927, or read a novel published in the 1850s, or listen to a radio broadcast of a baseball game played in 1935, or watch an 8 hour train ride through the european countryside, or see pictures or video of Machu Picchu.

All of these things are at my fingertips.

And I mostly use it to read words that make me sad and angry while also making money for rich people.

food, sweet

Today's #solarOven experiment was an apple *thing* (too much sugar for a sauce, probably too little to make it keep like a preserve): 130 g pureed apples and 40 g sugar, white in one jar, muscovado in the other.

In theory, I believe that if I heated the jars in the solar oven the day before, filled them to the top instead of just halfway, and fully closed the lid (maybe for the last hour or so of cooking) it should be safe for preserving (maybe also with a bit more sugar), since everything has been at pasteurization temperatures for hours. In practice, this one is going in the fridge, and I don't think it's going to survive much more than two days :D

cibo, dolce

Will I be able to have pasta with a warm sauce either this evening or tomorrow evening?

a badly taken picture of a pot of tomato sauce inside a solar oven

I don't have a good place to use the #solarOven in the middle of the day (I get direct sun from around 13:30 daylight saving time), and today it's a bit overcast, but the temperature probe below the pot has been above 65°C for a few hours now.

Today I decided I wanted to resume working on a #python script to generate an svg file for a piecepack set from a template and svgs of the suites, which is something I've been working on and (mostly) off for ages.

What I did today:

* did a bit of cleanup in the directory where I thought the script was (it wasn't)
* moved an unrelated script (to generate a template for telescoping boxes) which *was* in the above directory to the repository where I was actually working on the piecepack script
* did the initial release on pypy of my library to write command line commands (which at the moment is basically just what I had in lesana, extracted in a way that is general purpose).

Not sure whether I should have a feeling of accomplishment (I *did* things that were in the queue for months) or lack of :D

Tips for dealing with extreme heat that I've learned as a cold-blooded Welsh pluviophile living in the arid hellscape that is South Africa;

* Soak your feet in a tub of cold water.
-- Better if you've got a fan pointed in your general direction; soak your feet until they acclimatise to the water temperature, remove feet and let the fan cool your wet feet down with evaporation, place feet back in water, repeat.

New #felted #fauxdori

I'm not 100% happy with it: it is quite heavy, so it's probably not really confortable to use (or at least to carry around), but using a thinner wool probably wouldn't be sturdy enough. Also, the felting isn't very regular.

However, it is usable, so I'm calling it done, and will use it at home.

And move on to the next attempt at making AllTheFauxdori. because I'm absolutely not obsessed with those, right?

I may have just sent this to my #crocheting mom

and her response wasn't “no way”.

maybe we'll both forget about it before the autumn (it's just not something that can be worked during the summer), maybe I'll crochet-nerd-sniper her again. BUAHAHAHAHAH :D

A volte è inevitabile, a volte no.

If you're fed up with streaming services, I can strongly recommend ordering or picking up DVDs from charity shops.

Some of them are selling at ridiculously low prices, and you get a library of stuff you have actually chosen.

If you rip it to a computer you can make your own little personal netflix, with no piracy involved, the titles stay available forever, and the money goes to charity.

(Same applies to CDs for making your own Spotify.)

@Sophie
planner_generator.py needs a system with python3, inkscape and pdfjam: in debian the latter is in the package texlive-extra-utils (and yes, it will install a lot of dependencies)

and then ./planner_generator.py --help should give hints; I've started to write some docs and found some bugs, and right now I can't fix them, but I'll look into it later.

I have no idea whether they work on something that isn't linux, however

(also, within reason, I'm willing to just generate custom requests with one of those templates and a custom language, if running the script is too much of a hassle — I can see it being so)

Someone on Fedi created a site collecting news columns from centuries ago, debate articles by voices supporting the union between England and Scotland but pointing out its many flaws that would need to be addressed.

I read it with great interest a month or two ago. Who was it?

This is a book. It is available as web pages at the link above but you can also buy it and other books in tangible and non-tangible forms from randomscottishhistory.com/2019… .

The author of the book and the whole site is on fedi, hello @FlikeNoir , your work is amazing!

randomscottishhistory is a site much bigger than just this book; There's an overwhelming amount of material and there is also a number of podcast series: randomscottishhistory.com/rsh-…

Yesterday evening, while it was pretty hot, I've decided that this night we'll try to use my grandmother's embroidered linen bedsheet, instead of keeping them in a drawer forever because they are too nice.

Now it's raining and the temperatures have gone down a bit: should I do it more often?

Electrons? Oh, you mean metal spirits?

We use metal strings to trap the metal spirits, and talismans of black sandstone engraved with tiny runic circles to harness their power.

Sometimes we replace the strings with totems made of layered metal, but those don't last very long on their own. We can also use light spirits to command the metal spirits at distance, but the metal spirits are the ones that do most of the work.

Since a few weeks, my #debian #bookworm system was no longer able to build the initrd.img for new kernels. This morning it couldn't boot at all with a recent kernel (it did with an older one), so I found the time to look into it: it seems that the problem could have been related to the fact that my system still had split /usr; I've installed the #usrmerge package and now the initrd.img has been built.

I've just realized that watercolours with a water brush are the artsy-painty thing that uses less water among all of the ones that I have around the house.

With just a few squeezes and passes on a wiping cloth for washing the brushes, and no other tool that requires washing, it's pretty hard to beat them.

Given the name, that's somewhat counterintuitive, however :)

(yes, I could be using pencils, pastels, pens and a lot of other things that don't require washing at all)

historical sewist reaction

Please don't take this as a critique of the pattern or its authors: it looks pretty well made, and historical clothing is not their job or interest, and that's perfectly fine.

However. This phrase.
