Mi chiedo solo quanto possa avere appeal mastodon per la gioventù per una questione di interfaccia e stile, e come venga gestita la apertura ad altre istanze del fediverso che è un tema sempre molto delicato

Poi, però, abbiamo realizzato che c'è un ostacolo insormontabile: la sicurezza.
Un conto è avere un social privatissimo, di famiglia, un altro è avere un social con su 25 ragazzǝ. Avrebbe bisogno di monitoraggio e moderazione e andrebbe a gravare sulle spalle dellǝ insegnanti, che hanno già troppo da fare.
Sarebbe bello, ma per il momento partiamo dalle famiglie!
L'idea mi strapiace, soprattutto l'esigenza a cui risponde ❤ Da bambini impariamo a socializzare per gradi in ambienti via via più ampi e meno protetti, ma questo non avviene per la socializzazione online, che prevede quasi sempre un salto da 0 a 100, un po' come se passassimo direttamente dalla scuola dell'infanzia ai peggiori bar di Caracas. Ne parlo con amici e amiche famigliamuniti, magari a qualcuno interessa partecipare!
Tra l'altro mi megapiace anche molto l'idea di un mini-social che permetta a chi è più piccolo di restare in contatto con la famiglia allargata, magari per far vedere ai nonni e agli zii che abitano altrove cos'hanno appena disegnato o raccontare loro la propria giornata, cose così. Insomma le cose per cui i social erano belli 15 anni fa.
@mauriziozezo Sì. E immagina cosa resterà DOPO: un archivio incredibile, con i disegni dei bambini, accompagnati dai commenti dei nonni. Altro che album di foto.
quindi riuscite a creare una o più community non federate, che accettano soltanto gli iscritti locali? in tal caso potrebbe interessarmi la soluzione tecnica (oppure creare un "socialino" in particolare), per un centinaio (ma anche meno) di soci "over 60" che volessero comunicare fra loro. Però al momento è solo una mia idea e non so se potrebbe avere seguito...

It's become a great list of all the privacy violations Google did and still does. And I thought that it's gonna be long, but it's even longer than I imagined.
Looking at the results this morning the EU elections are definitely in "it could have been much worse" territory. While France continues its constant inexplicable flirtation with people called Le Pen and AfD somehow caught enough zeitgeist in the eastern parts of Germany to turn in an undeniably alarming performance, elsewhere.. it was less so. The biggest story is how badly the Greens lost. Even with their gains, the ID group plus ECR and AfD/Fidesz (both NI) are still smaller than the largest group (the EPP). On the left, Left plus S&D are nearly as large as the EPP and have only lost one seat between them. And both Fidesz in Hungary and PiS in Poland took a spanking, albeit in the former case this being "got less than half the vote". The fascists have not "won" this election. Not by a country mile. Don't listen to the constant "Far right takeover of Europe!!!11!!ELEVEN!!" stuff -- it just isn't true. Not only that, non-fascists are getting better at fighting the fascists electorally. There is room for optimism.
You don't owe anyone a follow (this includes me). Not even people you've been mutuals for a while. Not even people you know on real life. Not even people whose profile you check often.
Sometimes they just post too much. Or post stuff you don't want pop up on your list (but want to check on your terms). Or they start (re-)posting hate (you don't owe them a call out; especially not if you don't think it will go well). Sometimes they are lovely folks but just bore you with their favorite sports.
I don't speak Sindarin, but I found myself with an urgent need to know how one would say something like “Say meow and enter”, and some googling¹ and reading of web pages lead me to think it could be something like “Pedo muio a minno”, would it be correct?
Or maybe something like “Say, cat, and enter” would be better, and that, if I'm not mistaken, would be “Pedo muig a minno”?
If I understand correctly they are both neosindarin words, which makes me question Tolkien's priorities, but isn't necessarily an issue for my needs.
Did I get something horribly wrong? Would something else be better?

Es gibt keine direkte Übersetzung für "Miau" in Sindarin, da es sich um einen Laut handelt, den Katzen von sich geben, und Katzen nicht im Tolkien-Universum existieren. Daher müssen Phantasiewörter verwendet werden, die ähnliche Laute und Bedeutungen haben.
Hey there. My Sindarin knowledge is quite crusty by now but I'll throw in my two cents anyway.
I haven't been able to find a word for "meow" and I doubt it exists. The Sindarin for "cat" is indeed "muig", apparently. So "Pedo muig a minno" would seem correct.
However, in Sindarin there is the topic of lenition (softening) of consonants (see here: elvish.org/gwaith/sindarin_pho…) under certain circumstances. There doesn't seem to be a precise consensus on when this happens, though. A good article on this particular subject is this: fa-kuan.muc.de/SINDARIN.RXML (see section about the inscription on the doors of Moria) which seems plausible to me. It explains how "mellon" should actually have been lenited (to "vellon") but wasn't because it was, in fact, the password and needed to be spoken in its original form. This apparently threw Gandalf off track at first because he, of course, knew Sindarin perfectly well, as did the creators of the inscription.
Long story short: depending on the context you wish to use this in, "Pedo muig a minno" would be correct but if you wish to adhere to lenition rules it would become "Pedo vuig a minno".

quello è vero fino a un certo punto, è più probabile che succeda con certi portatili o con periferiche particolari, ma la situazione è lontana dall'essere tragica come vogliono farti credere questi bravi signori che io chiamo molto affettuosamente "wincucks".

E come fa notare anche l'articolo, indossare calze (di materiali naturali o al massimo tecnici e quindi traspiranti) con i sandali (o con qualunque paio di scarpe, in realtà) è molto più igenico e salutare per il benessere dei piedi.

Up to know, everything I've ever painted¹ was on a format between A6 and B8. The acrylic paint I have is in 20 ml tubes, other than 120 ml of titanium white that is lasting me forever.
Then during the weekend I had an overambitious idea that I don't even mention, because it will end in nothing, and I decided I wanted to do at least a couple things on a slightly bigger format, before committing to anything else.
Of course, I also never bought any mounted canvas: I paint mostly on watercolour (postcard) paper, as that sturdy enough for such small formats, and I have a couple pieces of canvas mounted on cardboard, also in A6, that I haven't used yet.
And it was the weekend, and a weekend when I was too busy to visit a shop, but I had a couple one-hour slots and I was feeling the Urge.
So I took the biggest pad of watercolour paper I have (A3-ish, spiral bound at the top, not even glued on the sides) and started to paint with acrylic on it.
Fino ad ora, ho sempre dipinto¹ in formati tra l'A6 e il B8. Ho degli acrilici in tubetti da 20 ml, ad eccezione di 120 ml di bianco di titanio che mi sta durando un eternità.
E questo weekend ho avuto un'idea troppo ambiziosa, che non nomino neanche perché finirà in niente, ma ho deciso che se non altro voglio provare a fare qualcosa in un formato più grande, prima di prendere decisioni su altro.
Ovviamente non ho mai neanche comprato delle tele: di solito dipingo su (cartoline di) carta da aquarello, che in quel formato sono più che sufficienti, e ho in giro giusto un paio di cartoncino ricoperto di tela, sempre in formato A6.
Ed era il weekend, un weekend pieno di impegni, in cui non sarei riuscita a passare da un negozio, ma avevo un paio di slot da un'oretta liberi, e il Bisogno.
Quindi ho preso il blocco di carta da aquarelli più grande che avevo (circa A3, rilegato a spirale, neanche incollato sui 4 lati) e ho iniziato a dipingerci sopra ad acrilico.

Tonight when I should have been sleeping or writing some stuff for work, I accidentally took a walk down fedi memory lane. Someone posted on their profile which accounts they had when, and I was inspired and made yet another attempt to locate some fragments of posts on servers long gone.
Parlementum was run by encyclomundi, who after a while would come down with life-threatening illness and disappeared off the net for several years. When he resurfaced we said hello on Twitter, but I never met him in person before he left this world for good.
This loss was the point at which I decided I should travel to meet more fedis, so if you meet me in Portland, OR in August this year, it will be partly because Charles "encyclomundi" Roth, his generosity and his kindness made such a deep impression on me.
As parlementum was being wound down and encyclomundi withdrawing from online life in 2013, I took temporary refuge at unlimited.status.net, one of many general-purpose *.status.net servers Evan's company StatusNet was running, experimenting with different maximum post length. They had names like 280, 560 and ... unlimited.
This was during the #pumpocalypse. identi.ca was already running pump.io at this point, but *.status.net were still on StatusNet and OStatus. I was already on the pumpiverse with an account on microca.st, but wanted to stay on the OStatusverse as well. It was not yet clear what that verse would look like without its flagship.

It was becoming clear that Qvitter was the future of the Fediverse. It was being called the Fediverse now, at least by some people, since around May 2012 if I remember our fedi archaeology accurately.
GNU Social / StatusNet was looking old-fashioned and Qvitter was the new and cool web application that looked like Twitter 2013 instead of Twitter 2008. Unfortunately it also broke the Wayback Machine, so today I'm grateful to the sites that retained the old-school UI as their default.
Early on quitter.se seems to have kept old-school the default, so we can see my profile page and that I joined on 2013-07-21.
2016 was a tumultuous year. A Twitter exodus led to @Angry Sun and others first joining quitter.se and other Qvitter sites, then setting up their own servers where they didn't have to follow quitter.se rules. quitter.se admin Hannes helped them with this, you can read more about it in Robek's web.archive.org/web/2022110718… . This changed Fediverse social dynamics forever.
A few months later @Eugen Rochko launched Mastodon and mastodon.social. *This* changed Fediverse social dynamics forever. Again.
2016-10-11 I joined mastodon.social to try it out, but quitter.se was still my main.
@evan @Gargron Mastodon in my opinion changed the culture of the Fediverse multiple times in different subsequent waves! There was as much culture shock between us and some of the 2018 people as between 2016 GNU Social Fediverse and when sealion.club/freezepeach.social and SPC arrived.
1. AP, and a backend written to use it as its internal datamodel from the get go 2. A backend in a language for highly concurrent network services (Elixir) 3. A frontend with new ideas for threading and a modern web framework (Vue)
The first phase was to bootstrap by building the new frontend over the GNU Social backend. Some time around 2017-04-01 I joined heldscalla to be there as it happened. We can see in chirp.cooleysekula.net/convers… that I was setting up my follows on the new account.
Here's a funny thing. My latest jump between accounts was when I moved here, to libranet. And that's the one I'm the most vague on. 🤣
I joined on 2018-07-03 and I think it was because I had wanted to try Friendica for some time. I think Heldscalla was also always intended to be an interim and an experiment. But then quitter.se collapsed shortly after I joined.
I think I may have been one of the last active users on Heldscalla, as Pleroma BE was ready, and people had left for a full FE+BE Pleroma server like Soykaf, or they had gone to Mastodon. It was closed or collapsed shortly after I left, I think.
Even though I barely remember why I moved here, libranet is now the main I've had the longest. It has performance issues sometimes, it needs to periodically close for db backups, the UI has its fair share of quirks, but I feel really at home here.
Life is slower and more thoughtful in the conversation-oriented Friendica model, compared to the more microbloggy and hectic Pleroma, Mastodon and *key worlds. To me, anyway.
So, happy birthday Fediverse! It's been a joy to see you happen and I am grateful to not just the handful of people mentioned, but to all the other people who were necesssary for this to ever happen, to happen the way it did, and for it to still be here today.
Thank you to all of you, and if I can make sure it won't clash with my HK visa renewal, I hope to meet several of you at FOSSy 2024!
@sun Weirdest one is I barely have memories of how SPC/FZP/… changed fedi (as I joined fedi somewhere in in 2013, first instance being loadaverage.org which was one of the last GNU Social instances to close down).
@iceloops @sun yeah, I hopped to the Friendica side of things with friendica.eu / social.hacktivis.me / snarl.de at some point though so I could connect with the folks at diaspora without yet-another-account (and then diaspora got irrelevant).

It would be great to know more about the word fediverse was getting used in 2012, the [The Federated SNS (Fediverse) Historical Timeline](codeberg.org/ddfon/federated-s…) likes to a [Twitter archive](web.archive.org/web/2022121008…) that doesn't show usage really picking up until early 2013. But then again that's usage on Twitter ... what about actually on the (proto-)fediverse?

I agree that it wasn't in general use. The skilledtests group "fediverse", e.g., wasn't created until 2013-07.
My timeline is based on people who were there agreeing that by the time Katsma was using it on Twitter in 2013-01, it had an established meaning.
The term was in use before identi.ca left OStatus, as people were creating more servers and moving away ahead of time. I haven't been able to find a hard source for that claim though, sorry.

I'm not sure about the 2012-05 reference, it might be talking about the fediverse in the sense of "the network used by the feds" (aka US government employees).

As far as I remember, “fediverse” was actively used in identica groups. But, unfortunately, after a thorough search of web.archive.org for instances around that time, none were archived. The only ones archived were the Twitter ones, users who crossposted to Twitter.

Some of those Twitter posts with “fediverse”, came from Laconica/StatusNet instances. Some of them were very familiar. It started as “identiverse” before it turned into “fediverse”. I remember there was a discussion about it. Someone raised how “identiverse” no longer fits as there are other instances besides identica already (not to mention, other software, and identica is attached to Laconica/StatusNet).
So, yeah, sadly, that's history that can no longer be “verified”. I don't even trust what I remember, LOL. It was a time when everyone was just cool about it, agrees easily, and then poof, it's done. It didn't register well in our memories.
Yeah! Parlementum / Encyclomundi. I miss him. He was one of the earliest host who simply provided various services without asking for anything in return.
He's still around, using Hubzilla I think, but not that active anymore, I think?
Oh, I am so sad to hear of Charles' passing. He was such a lovely person...one of the friends I made through Identica, and one of the people I have hoped to reconnect with in the Fediverse.

Today I've had a chance to notice that we (western societies) are sending off our textile waste to another continent, where at least some of it gets probably¹ shipped to China to be processed into felt to protect the floor when painting the walls, and then shipped back to us.
Why aren't we doing this anymore in Prato²? It could even be done by Chinese nationals, there, but at least it wouldn't travel halfway around the world and back!
¹ I have no idea whether that's the origin of that textile waste, maybe that felt was using textile waste from China itself, but still. ² an Italian town with a long tradition of textile industry, historically including textile recycling. These days it also has the second biggest community of Chinese nationals in Italy, most of them working in textile workshops, not always up to even Italian standards of workplace conditions.

Ma è difficile fare qualcosa che abbia veramente un effetto, come individui.
(Rammendarsi i vestiti ha tanti buoni effetti ed è un'ottima pratica da consigliarsi a prescindere, anche se difficilmente ha un vero impatto sul problema)
Io tendo a consumarli fino alla fine e spesso li faccio rammendare (cosa che da solo non sarei mai in grado di fare 😅); ma sono d'accordo con te che le scelte di pochi non abbiano impatto su fenomeni di questa portata.

Even if those felts were made of a polyester and cotton mix that probably comes from some of the worst garments for recycling (at least if one considers both the ease of recycling and the mass)

It is *evident* that the fact that the living room table is covered in bits of cardboard and bookbinding paper means that I'm cleaning up my desktop, right?
As in “making a small chest of drawers to store some of the samplers and small containers of ink that I currently have in a mess on the desktop” :D
The current status is that 3 out of 4 drawers are done, one is nearly done, and the structure to put them in needs to be redone from scratch, because my measurements have been way too optimistic and the drawers don't fit :(
But I've started to put some of the ink samplers in one of the drawers, and those are fitting just fine. Also, *all¹* the colours!

Lo status attuale è che 3 dei 4 cassetti sono finiti, il quarto è a buon punto, e la struttura in cui metterli è da rifare da capo, dato che sono stata troppo ottimista quando ho progettato le misure e i cassetti non ci stanno :(
Però ho iniziato a mettere un po' di campioni di inchiostro in uno dei cassetti, e quelli sono stati progettati correttamente. Ed inoltre *colori* *tutti¹ i colori*!
¹ in realtà poco più di metà dei colori disponibili per quella linea di inchiostri.
Unsure if I've ever shared my personal philosophy here, but it goes: "People are going to look, so give them something to fucking look at!"
I developed it when I was younger and visibly goth and queer, possibly even more so than now. People stared but I was always without a doubt the most interesting looking person on that bit of street, so I couldn't fault them for it! And anybody who had issues with it could see just how little I cared to hide.
If people are going to stare, just wear your favourite weird fabulous thing, the cute eyeshadow, the nice shoes that are comfy. Hold your head up high and walk on like you own the world. You're not the boring person without taste looking on and silently judging, you're the one who is feeling good about themselves and being who you want to be.
They're going to look anyway, make them remember that they looked! 😄
@amberage There's a local man here who uses a cane and wears an eye-patch. And yet he's not known for that, those are just details about the appearance of the Man Who Wears Three Piece Suits In Any Weather And Always Looks Fantastic! I wish him all the best, he has beautiful vintage looking coats as well.
People these days will first spot my face mask, or at least do a double take. Then their eyes linger and they see everything else!
@Gulleko Exactly! And I mean, in most cities (with the exceptions of ones with very thriving art scenes or super beautiful scenery) standing out even a little bit when there's absolutely nothing else of interest to look at makes them look at you
I live in a very small town, and my sense of style is definitely different from most people's. My favourite winter coat is vintage, wool, bright red and full length, and everyone else is walking around in modern black polyester. 😅
@Gulleko Here, in a medium sized European city, there's a huge quantity of jeans, jeans, jeans, puffy jacket, windbreaker, puffy jacket, jeans, athleisure and then tracksuits and some more jeans. 😆 Here there are a lot of metalheads, but even then it's black jeans!
@Gulleko My knees hate the pressure from trousers these days, so unless I have the knees literally cut away from jeans I can't wear them. 😅 They're also an absolute bitch to properly pattern and make, so I never got around to it just to slash them up, though they were a very usable garment back when I could wear them. Always in black, of course.
I have home skirts and outside skirts, because who wants to sweep the floors with everything the hem touched when out on walkies? Easier to change out of them, and wear them when going outside again.
Oh yeah, that's understandable. Jeans may be convenient and sturdy, but they're definitely not very comfortable (unless they're stretch jeans). I don't wear skirts long enough to drag on the floor no matter if it's inside or outside, because they would be so dirty from cat hair and their kitty litter... My ideal length is being able to step over a sleeping cat without having to lift my skirt. 😸
@Gulleko Stretch jeans are more comfortable but they don't last! I try to make mine so they just touch the tops of my shoes, but inevitably they'll swish over something, or drag on stairs. This didn't bother me before The Rona, but here we are. The top skirt gathers less cat hair, and the petticoat hem is mostly hidden, so it doesn't matter if it has cat hair! But also I vacuum like three times a week these days, so. 😄
@Gulleko I also probably have at least ADHD, but I've solved the issue by letting the vacuum cleaner live in the living room! Whenever I feel like there's too much fabric dust, bits of thread, cat hair, adventurous bits of kitty litter or anything, I can just grab the vacuum cleaner without any further steps to take and it doesn't take that long because I do it that often.
(Let's not talk about the state of my dishes, though...)
@Beckydog I was excruciatingly shy as a child and then felt weird all my life (neurodivergence, it comes for you!) and figured that because it was impossible to be just like everyone else, I'd be myself in the loudest most spectacular way I possibly knew how. It's been great!

@slothdude @Silversong A bunch of lads in high school did this thing where they'd play air guitar, mimic a heavy guitar riff and growl "Pale like the moon!" when I walked past in my full gothen regalia... I never knew if they meant it to mock me, or if we all thought it was equally in good fun, but in the end it was one of my favourite achievements in life to have a literal theme song everywhere I went! If they ever thought I'd take it as anything but a compliment, they sure didn't need to make it so rad!
@0xdariaj I don't feel like messing with taking it off and putting it back on, so I just always have one on when I'm somewhere. The easiest place to properly put it on is at home and sitting down! Usually my excursions are not that long anyway (I get tired) so it's not an issue to wear the same mask.
It's just nice to dress nice, too! It's not exactly armour, but it's better for morale to face small difficulties if you also look great. 😆

but one thing you have to maintain is your brain. If you're constantly driving your programming brain at maximum speed, maximum awareness of all possible caveats and vulnerabilities, always considering "how will I maintain this code in ten years time?" you're going to burn yourself out.
You're associating programming with a high-stress high-attention activity. That's going to make programming something that's categorized in your brain as no fun, never relaxing, never something you do just cause it would be interesting... you're going to start dreading it, even just a little. "oh well, let's get this over with."
That's not a good way to think about it in the long run.

Scambio lieviti madre. Non so quale sia l'hashtag giusto, e se ci sia, ma se qualcuno volesse del lievito madre, scambio/cedo volentieri. Una volta a settimana, solitamente il venerdì sera rinfresco sia il licoli ( lievito madre idratazione 100% ) che il lievito "standard" ( idratazione al 50% ). Basta organizzarsi.
Al più, cerco grani di kefir di acqua , per provarli.

La primissima idea, prima che di famiglie, parlava di scuole.
Poi, però, abbiamo realizzato che c'è un ostacolo insormontabile: la sicurezza.
Un conto è avere un social privatissimo, di famiglia, un altro è avere un social con su 25 ragazzǝ. Avrebbe bisogno di monitoraggio e moderazione e andrebbe a gravare sulle spalle dellǝ insegnanti, che hanno già troppo da fare.
Sarebbe bello, ma per il momento partiamo dalle famiglie!

in reply to Kenobit • • •Da bambini impariamo a socializzare per gradi in ambienti via via più ampi e meno protetti, ma questo non avviene per la socializzazione online, che prevede quasi sempre un salto da 0 a 100, un po' come se passassimo direttamente dalla scuola dell'infanzia ai peggiori bar di Caracas.

La scelta di federarle sarà delle famiglie, in futuro, quando la prole sarà cresciuta (o quando loro lo riterranno opportuno).
