Welcome to the Federation!

The Federation is a global social network that works by having different computers talk to each other, instead of having one computer having full control over the network and people's data.

The Federation includes five different projects:They are interconnected

Each of those projects are installed onto different computers called nodes, and those nodes talk to the others, and together make the full Federation. Any post you make can be viewed from any node.

Unlike other networks like Facebook, you see what you want, not what they want you to see. Content does not get bumped up because of popularity or what you do on the social network.

#Hashtags are essential to The Federation. You follow hashtags, and posts tagged with it appear in your stream. Hashtags open up your posts to different communities. The #newhere tag is followed by people that want to welcome new users into the community. The #linux tag is followed by people that like GNU/Linux systems, or just computers in general.

Just remember, if you want to find content here remember to follow #hashtags, and other people.

When you post things there is an option called visibility. It decides who sees your posts. Public means everyone can see them, "all aspects" (or similar) means only your contacts can see them, etc,

It is our job as the community to make content, invite people, fight spam, and even work on the projects themselves.

Have fun in this community.

OK, I think I have this diaspora* engagement thing down for all us #gplusrefugee types. I'm writing this up partly to help 'splain things to others who are #newhere, and to help me wrap my head around it as well. Maybe even get someone who knows it better to straighten me out if I'm egregiously wrong.

The levers we have are #hashtags and contacts, which are grouped into aspects.

What we see is based on who is in our active aspects, and what hashtags we are following. If someone in an active aspect shares a post that is visible to you, you will see it, regardless of the hashtags. This means you could get #photography posts from someone in your #linux aspect. People have many facets. Likewise, if a post is public and has a hashtag you follow, you will see it even if the author isn't in your contacts/active aspects. If people get into the habit of practicing #thoughtfulhashtag, I'd argue that it would be beneficial to follow hashtags as a consumer, and leave aspects for use as a producer (or for select people from whom you want everything).

What we make visible is based on the aspects the post is published to. If you only make it available to your Family aspect, then only those contacts will see the post, regardless of how many tags you load the post with. I assume this is why the auto-reciprocate follow mechanism is on by default. Since visibility is controlled by the author, the auto-follow is a mechanism for a consumer to self-subscribe to a producers content. With creative use of aspects, it's still possible to actively curate your audience. Unless you are careful with hashtags and publish everything as public, you will find diaspora* a lonely place if you turn off auto-follow.

I think I cleared that up for myself. I hope that helped at least one other person. If I made any horrific factual error(s), please let me know. If you disagree with my analysis, I'm open for discussion. If you still have no idea what the hell is going on, ask away and I, or someone else (I hope) will surely help as best they can.

Hello and a big welcome

to everyone arriving from Google+

A lot of you have been joining since yesterday. We're so pleased that you've decided to give diaspora\* a try!

We hope that you quickly find your way here, and enjoy getting connected with people and content.

Here's a few tips for getting started:
  • There are some step-by-step tutorials on our project website covering the basics of how diaspora* works, and how to get connected with people. There's a link to these in the side-bar, should you ever want to read them in future, and there's also an in-app Help section you can access through your user menu (at the right-hand end of the header bar).
  • You can search for people by name or by diaspora* ID (which looks like an email address), if you know it, from the search field in the header bar. You can invite people to join you in diaspora* by sending them a link to our project website, from where they can choose their own pod to register with. Your friends don't need to be on the same pod as you in order to connect and communicate with you.
  • One good way to start getting connected with people is to start following some #tags of subjects that interest you (maybe #music, #photography, #linux, or #activism ... whatever interests you) so that you will see content on those topics in your stream. You can then start following people whose posts you find interesting, by placing them into one of your aspects.
  • If you have any questions, post something with the #question or #help tag, and people will try to help you. Make sure to make your post public so anyone who can help is able to see it!
diaspora\* has some very simple community guidelines, which we hope everyone will feel able to follow so that all members can have the best possible experience here.

We're trying to improve diaspora* all the time, fixing bugs, honing performance and adding new features. But how fast we can do this is limited by the time developers have. To improve diaspora* faster, we need more developers! If you've just signed up and can code, or know someone who can and who might be interested in joining our team, get in touch!

<3 diaspora\*

I've got a little #Linux #Problem.
On an external hard-drive formatted in #NTFS there's a folder named like "foo - bar.mp4" which i can't delete, move or rename. Any hints?
