anyway, doing a couple of prints with acrylic paint and a spray bottle of water instead of proper linocut ink works, cleaning up is a bit of a pain. I would never do tens of prints with it (but then I'm not doing them anyway).
Retarder medium would probably help, but I don't have it. But maybe for those few times when I want to use metallic or other special effect paint it's more sensible to buy that, and use the acrylics I already have, rather than buying more types of linocut ink.

Here is a hopefully-useful notice about Linux kernel security issues, as it seems like this knowledge isn't distributed very widely based on the number of emails I get on a weekly basis:
- The kernel security team does not have any "early notice" announcement list for security fixes for anyone, as that would only make things more insecure for everyone.
- The kernel community does not assign CVEs, nor do we deal with them at all. This is documented in the kernel's security policy, yet we still have a number of people asking for CVE numbers even after reading that policy. See my longer "CVEs are dead..." talk for full details about how the CVE process is broken for projects like Linux: kernel-recipes.org/en/2019/tal…
- You HAVE to take all of the stable/LTS releases in order to have a secure and stable system. If you attempt to cherry-pick random patches you will NOT fix all of the known, and unknown, problems, but rather you will end up with a potentially more insecure system, and one that contains known bugs. Reliance on an "enterprise" distribution to provide this for your systems is up to you, discuss it with them as to how they achieve this result as this is what you are paying for. If you aren't paying for it, just use Debian, they know what they are doing and track the stable kernels and have a larger installed base than any other Linux distro. For embedded, use Yocto, they track the stable releases, or keep your own buildroot-based system up to date with the new releases.
- Test all stable/LTS releases on your workload and hardware before putting the kernel into "production" as everyone runs a different % of the kernel source code from everyone else (servers run about 1.5mil lines of code, embedded runs about 3.5mil lines of code, your mileage will vary). If you can't test releases before moving them into production, you might want to solve that problem first.
- A fix for a known bug is better than the potential of a fix causing a future problem as future problems, when found, will be fixed then.
I think I need to give another talk about this issue to go into the above in more detail. So much for me giving a technical talk at Kernel Recipes this year...

@emery I'm eyeing flowerpots, because I really want this to produce a /functional/ final object; part of why I'm trying to bring in material culture in projects like this is to have them get a better understanding of Greek mythology as being part of the everyday culture, not just part of Literature or Special Events or Rituals. So I want them to make something they can at least store pencils/paper clips in, with myth on it.
That makes sense. Most of the "unpainted" pottery I'm finding in a quick search is meant to be fired afterwards. IIRC Greek pottery was 'painted' with slip and then fired to get the black colour on the red base clay?

If you live in a city with tall buildings, take a look at the night skyline. The buildings probably have flashing lights on them to help aircraft pilots to identify the shapes of buildings and not fly into them.
You might notice that the buildings flash in synchrony, even though they are hundreds of metres apart. What's going on?
and in related matters, I just got to sit at a stop-go person while a ginormous crane was being erected for the latest block 'o apartments that's going up in oakleigh. Was looking for the lights on it, but can't really see them in day time
The idea is that all the lights on a given building should flash together. That way, an aviator can visualize the solid space between lights that blink the same way. Blink same? Don't fly. Blink different? That's a gap.
And that's how it worked for a while. A building's owner would wire all the lights together and feed them with a centralized oscillator signal.
Later on, when wire got expensive and buildings got taller, they switched to short-range radio, with one transmitter sending the blink signal, and each light having a receiver in it.
This worked fine, because all oscillators will drift eventually, so every building gets a different blinking pattern.

Now you can buy a beacon like this one, which is standalone and has a GPS receiver in it. Anyone who's cobbled together an NTP server will know that the GPS system can provide microsecond-accurate time as a side-effect.
So these beacons don't care where they are, but they all know exactly when "now" is. And they can synchronize to each other by synchronizing to the GPS signal. It makes maintenance _so_ easy.
Trouble is, these beacons come preset to a particular blink pattern, and when you buy one (ten, fifty) you're probably not going to bother to change the blink pattern in them all. What if you forgot to do one?
So what happens is that your building is synchronized to GPS, and so is your neighbour's building, and so is _their_ neighbour's building. The whole city flashes once every two seconds, like clockwork.
Completely negating the whole point of having one blink-pattern per building, and rendering aviation around tall buildings unsafe again.
It's an accidental own-goal, brought about by the efficiencies of global, perfect, timekeeping.
(Postscript: a few of us here on the Fedi worked this out from first principles after someone noticed that the lights on several buildings in their city were all blinking together. It was a great piece of detective work.)

The detective work was largely: • They must be synchronizing to something wide-area. • Even in parts of the world that don’t do the shortwave radio clock thing. • They seem to flash for an exact number of seconds. • If it’s GPS then there must be GPS-enabled beacons for sale online. • Web search > oh, lookit that.
Thankyou for explaining this! I've tried to take photos of the Melbourne CBD skyline at night and noticed that many of the buildings have rooftop navigation lights in synch, a few switch with the same period but a different part of the cycle, and a few others appear to drift over time so they appear to harmonise sometimes but not at other times.
Cool! I've noticed the lights on a group of nearby wind turbines all blinked together, very satisfying, but I did wonder how they were synchronized. Thanks for the explanation!

Oh, fascinating. I'd noticed this synchronization with things like AM broadcast antenna tower arrays before, which maybe is a lot like a single building conceptually, but I hadn't noticed city skylines in recent years.
Couldn't they manufacture them to blink at a time based on the bottom bits of their latitude/longitude? So that lights on the same building would blink nearly simultaneously, but lights on different buildings would blink at discernibly different times?

But seriously, they are already made with customizable blink timing patterns, but the fact that you see entire cities blinking like one giant Christmas tree tells you how much this feature is being used.
Right, the lack of use of the customization is why I was looking for a manufacturing default that might accomplish the desired purpose.
Saying "bottom bits" was cavalier of the details; but the GPS has the location, and I'm confident it's possible to develop a location-based algorithm that could distinguish buildings reasonably well without requiring they be build on a grid. It seems like the manufacturers could improve the situation without cooperation from the field.
similarly, back before GPS, radio altimeters, etc, if two flights were accidentally assigned to the same flight level, differences in their barometric altimeters meant they would probably miss each other even if they got quite close.
So after the tech advances, everything is right at the altitude it’s been put at and the danger of collision went up for a while.
That’s fixed now, but only because they built an entire traffic avoidance system to avoid this (TCAS)
Huh. I was under the impression that the synchronisation was deliberate to not create visual cacophony by randomly blinking lights. The documents I have available about the rules for equipping wind turbines also say that the lights should be synchronized. But that might be a German speciality? On the other hand, the rules for aviation safety ate pretty international... 🤷♂️
@ascii158 From the replies I’ve had, it does vary somewhat by jurisdiction. One document I found about Australian CASA rules mentions simultaneous flashing; you can find it somewhere in the replies.
This would be something for the benefit of night-flying life-flight helicopters or something like that? I would have thought that most aviation would simply stay well away from any lights.

Interesting. I'd have thought that modern cities are so light-cluttered that there's very little chance of being able to resolve individual buildings anyway.
I've an interest in this (my last serious job related to pilot-training software, mostly relating to airlines) but no specific knowledge.
@jorgeyanesdiez I can't think of a way to do this without the beacon needing to have a copy of a map. Consider in a dense downtown: the corners of different skyscrapers may be across a street only 20 m wide but the buildings themselves fill a 200 m block. Closeness is actually the _opposite_ of what you want.
Thanks for explaining! Reminded me of the theory of relativity where you think about the fact that due to the limitation of speed of light there is no real "same time" in different locations as the an observer sees the lights flashing differently based on his viewpoint. Doesn't matter here of course, but theoretically it would be the perfect example.

If the buildings are that close together it might be safer to have them on the same blink schedule so they appear to be one contiguous structure. Because you probably don’t want anyone trying to fly between them.
@CStamp … in fog or smoke, or in high winds, or if there’s a general power failure taking out a block, or c’mon, use your imagination, engage disaster movie mode. The fact that these safety systems exist in the first place means that they save lives. “Shouldn’t” isn’t an argument.

Periodic reminder that if you're working with woven, non-elastic fabric, there aren't many reasons¹ not to use cotton thread to sew it: it will work, it won't break and it won't rot² unless it's really bad quality thread. The time between everybody using linen thread (for linen and cotton) and when plastic thread was available wasn't that long, compared to the history of clothing, but it was still many decades, and at a time when clothing was still an expensive thing that needed to last.
¹ and other than variations “I have a TON of plastic thread and don't want to buy more” I can't think any that doesn't involve another natural fiber such as linen or silk thread. ² in your wardrobe, things may be different if you bury it in soil :)

When I had a serger I used both the light weight and regular cotton, but I never had a great experience with sergers, so I think it's better to hear from somebody who has.
@kamikat You should be able to, though you may need to find some heavy washers or a way to adapt your spool pins to hold them down. Try online sellers for the big cones.

I almost poured my (pea) milk into my coffee bean cup (for grinding) when I made my cappuccino this morning. I'm glad I noticed just in time and put beans in there and the milk in the milk jug.
I purchased a LOT of "souvenir fabric" when I lived overseas. At the time, I didn't sew much so I thought 1-2 metres of fabric would be sufficient. I have a pattern I can use to adapt some of this into tops but I mainly need to use what I got for contrasting pockets and yokes, bags, or cushion covers. It's all fun to use! #sewing #travel

you know what else is magic? Getting in your climate controlled coach, driving to somewhere 40 miles away and arriving about a half hour later, and all the while you listened to a symphony played by a 100 piece orchestra.

The hooks and eyes on the linen jacket I did last year aren't working. I think I know why, and the next time I'll do something similar I'll add some boning where the hooks and eyes are supposed to be, but doing it on this jacket would be too much pain.
So, buttons and buttonholes it is.
And in the last couple weeks I've made 32 fabric covered buttons (with a metal washer, not with a kit), marked with thread the position of 31 buttonholes, made 16 buttonholes (15 remaining, plus attaching all of the buttons).
And the time of the year when a linen jacket is useful is approaching fast (or at least, I hope it is. #teamWinter).
Will I finish the jacket before the weather cools down a bit? Will we have a week of cool weather while the jacket is still not done, followed by a month-long return of summer?

(ma vabbé, dai, mica dobbiamo arrivare da qualche parte, il problema di trenord è portarti da qualche parte entro l'orario in cui devi arrivare, ma se non hai un orario di arrivo c'è molto meno rischio :D )

Ieri ho parlato di eco ansia con una coppia di amici che a breve saranno genitori. Ovviamente hanno deriso la ragazza che piangendo ha detto di non voler figli, aggiungendo che l'eco ansia sarebbe solo l'ennesima malattia fittizia inventata dalla gen z per attirare l'attenzione.
Probabilmente sono io che non ho figli e non posso capire, ma mi sale veramente il veleno se penso che questi stanno per mettere al mondo una persona che vedrà il peggio della catastrofe climatica senza nemmeno porsi il problema di cosa stia succedendo oggi.
Inutile aggiungere che la società chiama loro maturi e responsabili perché hanno figli a scatola chiusa e me bamboccio perché non ne voglio e mi faccio domande...
Generare persone che non potranno essere altro che schiavi, e che dovranno mangiarsi il vicino di casa prima di essere mangiati da quello (finito quello mangeranno i genitori, che ormai sono improduttivi), non è che mi sembri un'idea molto matura e responsabile.
io ho una figlia di 11 anni e soffro di eco ansia pensando a cosa le riserverà il futuro. Non importa essere genitori o meno. È una questione di amore, sensibilità ed empatia verso chi dovrà affrontare un futuro potenzialmente terribile...

I've had a chance to see the first episode of the Wheel of Time, and I have many questions about their choices, but the biggest one is this.

Did they even bother reading even to the end of the first book (if I remember it correctly, or maybe it's the beginning of the second) before doing the casting?
Or are they going to skip a major episode, drastically change the character and the series should basically be considered a completely different thing from the books? (this would be the least bad option, I guess. The books *do* have a number of problems.)

Al massimo ho provato ad aprire una lattina di piselli supponendo per assurdo che fosse aperta (l'altra persona che stava cercando di cucinare con me ha provato a farli uscire per effetto tunnel).
Somebody(TM) should make a bot that posts daily snippets of Babbage's rants from his works. And what he wrote as fun stories (complete with tables of data as the punchline!).
I don't think it would work on mastodon, however, he didn't exactly work with a 500 characters limit :D

in reply to Elena ``of Valhalla'' • •anyway, doing a couple of prints with acrylic paint and a spray bottle of water instead of proper linocut ink works, cleaning up is a bit of a pain. I would never do tens of prints with it (but then I'm not doing them anyway).
Retarder medium would probably help, but I don't have it. But maybe for those few times when I want to use metallic or other special effect paint it's more sensible to buy that, and use the acrylics I already have, rather than buying more types of linocut ink.
