So, I *miiiiight* have bought¹ a new board: olimex.com/Products/IoT/ESP32/…

it arrived yesterday.

this morning I quickly followed the tutorial to check if it was working (it is, and the camera quality looks decent enough)

now the question is: what do I want to do with it?

These things can all be true at the same time:

- If you created free software you don't owe anyone anything, you created it as a gift, people can accept it or not.

- If you are using free software you don't owe anyone anything, you received it as a gift.

- If you created your software because you wanted it to help people it will help more people longer if you create a community around it that can maintain the software longer than you.

- If you want to keep using the software longer it will help if you support the author and help create a community around the software that can maintain it longer than one volunteer author.

I've decided to post the pattern for the shawl I'm making on my website even if it hasn't been finished yet: it's easy enough that I'm pretty confident in it even after just a small sampler.

This is the current status:

My yarn winder has arrived, and it works!

It's fast, it doesn't hurt my wrists (like using a stick does), it can do 100g cakes and it makes the idea of dealing with about 6 kg of mostly very thin yarn much less daunting than having to make balls by hand.

TFW you wear your last pair of clean cotton thin¹ socks, and it breaks. and you don't have enough dirty clothing for a full washing machine load, and you should really go out and buy more, but UGH, no, I don't want to do that, I have lots of better things to do with my time!

so you spend a whole afternoon patching *one* pair of socks and finishing another pair that you sewed yourself from jersey fabric, that takes less time, right?

¹ as opposed to mid-thickness wool socks that I knit myself

I guess this means I've choosen a side?

(picture of two round patches, on one there is a screenprinted bull's eye in blue and yellow, the other shows the pin sewn to the back)

By that time I would have *serious* doubts about the colours, really, but they are the #screenPrint paints (dekaprint 2000 in blue and yellow + deckweiß to print it on black fabric) I needed to test, and the alternatives wouldn't have worked :D

also, aligning two colour prints on small scraps of fabric is hard, even if you have a bit of a border on the lighter colour :D

Every six months or so for the past several years, I've been doing a thread on Fedi about where to buy ebooks other than Amazon. It finally occurred to me that I could write it once, put it up on website, and update as needed, rather than constantly reinventing the wheel.

So, here we are. (And in spite of the title, this isn't JUST about eBooks)

I may have bought *some* wool yarn on cones, and now I need to turn it into 100g hanks, wash them, make center-pull balls and then it can be knitted. And some of it is very fine yarn meant for machine knitting.

I have a swift, I've set it to make an hank that is about 1m long, calculated how many meters are there in 100g (easy, the shop provided the number of meters in the full 500g cone), and then I didn't want to count the turns, so I started looking around the house for a magnet (I knew where it was and easily found it) and an hall effect sensor (I still haven't found it) and some microcontroller board to setup some kind of device for counting passes of the magnet over the sensor.

And then my SO told me ā€œwhy don't you just weight the empty swift?ā€

Yesterday I stumbled on handknittingcashmereyarn.com/c… (a pattern in Italian for the scarf made with triangles of which I don't remember the English name).

And I had plans for the afternoon! (ok, mostly it involved ironing a bit of backlog, and watching videos online while #knitting a sock).

Instead, I now have an urgent need to have one such scarf, except in a (the most simple) lace stitch, and I have one triangle already made.

Hey #Fediverse, here's a #tip. Be aware of those who surround you, and remember to use the #ContentWarning button.

It's simple: you click or tap on the CW button, fill the small space above the toot with one or more words summarizing the content, write the toot and post.

This will help people stay afloat by avoiding overexposure to #TrendingTopics, and also avoid mentally deteriorating #triggers for those who are recovering and have survived.

Here's a list of common #warning words:

  • uspol / ukpol / itapol / pol (anything political)
  • depression / mental health (mh)
  • violence / sexual violence
  • food, alcohol

Boost this around! Let's get through this together! :boosts_ok:

Feel free to add more under this toot! Let's make this as complete and exhaustive as possible.

Since some people are hijacking this thread to turn it into a "pros and cons": please keep your opinions on #ContentWarnings for yourself. For once.

Content warnings are here for a reason: to let people not get too much overwhelmed from news, topics, and other things that can cloud judgment, or ruin mental clarity. Especially when it comes down to things they have no control over, and considered how toxic a discussion over any topic can become in the media today.

You're entitled to not be overwhelmed by a continuous barrage. You're allowed to choose how much to take today, and how many reactions to read. Treat yourself the way you wish others to treat, and respect other people's choices in the matter. If you think you may be strong enough to go through a lot, think again: it's just you. Be considerate of others.

If anybody else is interested in #HistoricalSewing, today I stumbled on a couple of lists of period #patternDrafting and generally #sewing books, mostly biased towards the early 1900s

Cose che vorrei imparassimo da questi due anni e spicci di pandemia: se sei malatə, non vai a lavoro.

Tutto vero.

Poche macchine (soprattutto parcheggiate), qualche pedone e bicicletta.

Picture taken in an italian town, with a tree-lined, downhill wide street; at the end there are a 4-stories building with shops and another street. Few cars (mostly parked), few pedestrians and bikes.

This pangram (a sentence using every letter of the alphabet) is so much more bad-ass than the stupid "quick brown fox" that I had to illustrate it. A tribute to master Jean Giraud (aka Moebius).

It is a website promoting "mastodon.uno" over other instances, it's their first link on the page.
If I had my own instance, I wouldn't federate with people tricking others into joining their instance [mastodon.uno] .

I feel an irrestistible need to share with you all the good news that I've just finished the thread in the bobbin right at the end of a seam.

Not the last seam of the project, that would have been *too much*, but not the next to last seam of a project either.

Last night a goddess visited me in a dream (you will easily guess which one) and told me that the next time I receive something packaged in a flimsy cardboard box I need to cut and assemble a small model of a box out of it, and burn it completely on her altar one night so that the boxiness of it reaches the big scratching post in the sky.

Decided late last night I should make a pixel font that resembles Latin Textura manuscripts, scribal abbreviations and all.

Coming up with rules in the font to automatically use the abbreviations was pretty fun. Making vector versions of all the letters was not.

Filed under: if it can be done it must be done (it's probably not a good idea), right?

18th century pocket. *tactical*!

(Picture of something shaped line a 18th century pocket, except it's made of blue cordura with alternating red and white 2.5 cm webbing sewn at regular 4 cm intervals, and the front slit is closed by a water repellent zipper.)

(Picture of the back of the same pocket, where the webbing is blue (in a darker hue than the cordura), there is no slit, but two small belt loops sewn in the top seam.)

I know, to make it properly *tactical* it should have been camo instead of brightly coloured, but I have no camo fabric at home (and honestly have no plan to buy any) and this was a spur-of-the-moment thing made with leftovers from my backpack-and-accessories.

Also, there isn't an exact pattern for *this* version, but my pattern for pockets is on sewing-patterns.trueelena.org/… and the MOLLE bit is done like on the backpack from the same site (sewing-patterns.trueelena.org/…), so #FreeSoftWear, I guess?

TFW it's 21:40, you're making something silly and want to see it finished, you are at the stage where you need to sew a waterproof zipper into waterproof fabric (so there is only one try) plus a lining, and you're stuck with deciding the best way to do it in a way that is as clean as possible. Also, the neighbors won't be happy about my sewing machine going on in the night

I'll try to do the sensible thing and sleep on it. As opposed to both doing it wrong right now AND waking up in the middle of the night with an idea on how to do it and then not being able to sleep.

Tomorrory is a holiday, so I'll be able to work on it in the morning, at least.

she has just taken a small magnet, maybe 2 cm tall, put it on her scissors, and used that as a guide to cut a regular sewing allowance around a pattern.

that loooks like a very useful #sewingTip!

TIL: using white glue to attach a waterproof zipper to TPU-coated cordura (and to uncoated lining cordura), and leaving it overnight with a lot of binder clips on WORKS.

In some places it had detached, but there was enough still working that I was able to sew the zipper with much less effort than I would have if everything was kept together with binder clips.
