You know what: it'd be great if people who need accessibility didn't go around calling other people's work "trash". I get it: accessibility is hard, and required for people to use a computer—but you know how proprietary platforms deal with it? They pay developers. You know what Linux users do for it? They fucking whine about it, and then they go out and say that any effort made is trash.

Well, guess what: stuff doesn't fix itself.

Dear lazyweb,

I remember that some time ago somebody mentioned a good (well maintained with modern extensions) #xmpp server that offered accounts for a small price (as opposed to free) and wasn't conversations.im, but I can't find which one it was.

I'm writing suggestions for new users, and I'd like to provide more than just one alternative.

#xmpp

For example, the jmp.chat gateway. Once a person has an account on some server and a client application, then jmp.chat/ gives xmpp phone numbers with standard telephony network connections for a small fee after a free demo period. They are a gateway for voicemail, texts, SIP and other media through xmpp, and committed to the GPL.

For more technically inclined readers, xmpp.org/about/myths.html compares benefits of xmpp with other communication standards protocols.

It's Prime Day, which means that I'm spending money anywhere but Amazon.

I have a couple of electronics gizmos and related artifacts that I need for myself and for our Maker Space.

I am soliciting suggestions for which items to buy and where to buy them in this thread. I will update it throughout the day, and may octopode it, we'll see how froggy I'm feeling.

Ebook readers -

The first item I'm looking for is a cheap and reliable ebook reader with a backlight, support for common file formats (epub I guess, is the only one I care about) and ideally a web browser which can be used to browse a library web page we run on our intranet to load ebooks on to the thing.

Micro USB or USB-C charging, and battery life of 20+ hours active is ideal

I need 4 - 6 of them, but I'd like to spend less than $300, which is the most complicated part here.

in reply to Andrew (Television Executive)

Tablets -

There are a couple of places in the maker space where having an easy interface to a web portal, etc, would be really useful.

Stuff like "checking out a piece of equipment from the closet" and "clocking out of my volunteer shift" and "registering the time that I turned on the kiln, and what temperature I set it to."

I plan on having a web page to record these things, but a wall or desk tethered touch screen would be useful. Less than $75?

Thanks to the sewing machine, advances in the quality of machine lace etc. shirtwaists in the most delicate & dainty materials can now be had for pretty cheap, but before buying them the prudent office girl should ask herself: can I afford their laundry costs?

(says the one who has just ironed and starched a few shirts, and even cheated a lot (steam iron, spray starch…), but it's HOT)

the amount of *-ism in that book is just as can be expected from a book of the early 1800 that is meant to be used when teaching the poor so that they can become exploitable domestic workers.

But then, it was the early 1800s, it's not like one could expect anything better.

And for people who are interested in historical clothing, it's full of useful bits.

Ever used this?
"wget <url-to-gpg-key> | sudo apt-key add -"

man:apt-key says
"apt-key - Deprecated APT key management utility"

It has been deprecated for (quite) a while now, but most people probably missed that.

is an excellent blog post describing what you should use instead.

It also describes a feature to restrict a gpg key to a specific repo (available since apt 1.1):

BTW, I feel I should mention that of course I'm also leaving freenode, you can find me on both Libera.chat and OFTC.

I may still be on FreeNode for a few days, to help with the ongoing migration of one channel, but if you need to contact me it's better to use one of the other two.

Here's my favorite git feature that no one knows about:

You can reference commits using the commit message instead of the hash. The ":/" syntax accepts a regex that matches any part of the commit message, returning the youngest matching commit.

ugh. libre-#$$@#$-office.

I've looked into it and it's because the package has a Recommends on unoconv (converter between LibreOffice document formats), which in turn Recommends the whole suite.

I've found that apt install --no-install-recommends gnome-books brings down the dependency list to a much more reasonable size. (of course, some features of gnome-books will be missed, notably all those that relate to dealing with office formats).

Disclaimer: I had to work with uno (accessing libreoffice from python programs) and I got traumatized by the experience :)

Interesting news from the #xmpp world: there is been funding to work on improving / bringing back user portability for xmpp.

* one tiny bit of kneadable eraser
* some pencil lead shavings (from a 2mm lead rather than a regular pencil, so that there was no wood)

kneaded together for a while, applied with a toothpick over an #SMDjumper

profit!

no more cleaning a jumper that has been written over with pencil every time I try to update the firmware on my #espruinoPico

disclaimer: wash your hands after kneading the eraser and before touching sensitive electronics, as they may be more conductive than usual :D

New shirt!

Sewn by hand, pattern by Bernadette Banners on youtube with minor changes (all of the non-historically accurate details are mine).

Light blue (with a purple tint) shirting that I bought a few years ago, so it counts as stashbusting, right?

Worn tucked in

and loose, with a belt (I guess it can be worn without the belt, but I don't think I like that look)

It is pretty long, almost reaching to above-knee lenght.

Also, is it me, or am I accidentally ending up with a pidgeon breast look even when wearing things from a different era?

I am once again asking that you start your own instance. Just do it. Control your own data, make your own rules, and choose what you see. It’s fun. And as the Fediverse scales horizontally, we will each individually hold a larger stake in the network.

Again, if you are having any trouble, please (!) feel free to reach out to me. I will be more than happy to help you out with whatever problems you have.

Set it up on a server that is yours or will be yours

Pay someone else to host it for you

If you're annoyed by the shit #Signal is doing, don't switch to the next centralized thing. They all tend to go bad after a while and you can't do anything about it. Use decentralized messengers instead, like #XMPP, #Matrix or #Deltachat. Federated protocols like them can't add features unless a lot of people agree.

Dear fediverse: do you know of any online shop in Europe that sells food-grade paper packaging such as bread bags in quantities suitable for the needs of a household (a min quantity of 100 pieces is fine, 1000 is not, 10000 is definitely way too high)?

Excluding amazon / ebay / other big platforms.

Thanks, and boosts welcome

I have never retracted anything, nor I intend to do so. As one of the first signers I stand behind what is written in the open letter.

I hope that is clear enough.

(I deduce from your messages that you cannot reconcile this with what I wrote in the message that started this thread. And I can live with that.)

in reply to Stefano Zacchiroli

I'm still curious as to what it is that you agree with that article when it comes to getting behind criticism of the open letter, while also standing behind the letter. it sounds a little contradictory to me, and I expect your stating what it was that you criticized would have made it clear, but I get and respect that you won't wish to specify what the criticism you also partially undersigned was, and prefer to leave it up for speculation. I acknowledge and appreciate the self-criticism you imply with this combination of actions. o-o

Please, /please/, don't make /only/ videos, y'all! Make text articles too!

Text is even /easier/ to make it's just /always/ video

always

Not everyone can do videos. Especially long videos that we're expected to Sit Down And Focus Entirely On which means engaging speech parsing AND we can't easily back up and reread things like we could text and we /can't slow down/ like we could text and we can't skim like we could text and just

there's often /no point/ to it being a video and we /can't/.

Sometimes people use “respect” to mean “treating
someone like a person” and sometimes they use
“respect” to mean “treating someone like an authority”

and sometimes people who are used to being treated
like an authority say “if you won’t respect me I won’t
respect you” and they mean “if you won’t treat me like
an authority I won’t treat you like a person”

and they think they’re being fair but they aren’t, and
it’s not okay.

Dear @David Revoy after reading this I also will stop to follow you.

All of you are confusing personal bias with actual facts, attacking RMS for a behavior which is probably spread over the 90% in whole IT industries at any level. We reached the point to decided if it is better mobbing RMS or closing on eye over GAFAM that every day besides making the world a worst place is injecting moneys in the open source and free software space. I think this is the real point.
