After trying some materials I had at home and not finding anything satisfying, I did a panic buy of #macrame cord to be used in the drawstring backpacks I'm making as gift wrappers, from an online shop.

@zephyr my default giftwrapping solution are furoshiki: cut a square of fabric, hem the borders, wrap and knot it around the gift, and then it can be reused in a lot of ways.

here in Italy (possibly Europe?) manitoba flour is a commercial term for very high gluten wheat flour, even if it doesn't come from the Manitoba province: I've just used W310 (medium high gluten?) instead of the mix of flours.
Also, I've used type 1 flour rather than type 00, which is a bit more coarsely ground (but not wholewheat or anything) and IMO improves the recipe.

The white part is a reflection of the light, they are just regular big sewing needles (size 2 sharps - I believe that bookbinding needles should have a rounded tip, but right now this is what I have)

I'm a very slow sewer too. But better slow and you get somewhere, than fast and the result is just rubbish. I'd hate that.
All pieces have been cut, one spool of sewing silk has been placed in my huswif ready to be used, and the rest of the wool (a couple of meters) has been stored away for the next project (TBD).
I still have to baste the seam lines for the armscyes and cut the gussets out of the sleeves (which I'm going to do only when I'm ready to sew them, to avoid losing pieces), and then I'll be able to clear the living room table :D
I haven't posted updates because I haven't reached any milestone yet, but I've been going slow and steady.
I started by cutting and sewing the sleeve gussets (so that all of the cutting is done) and the sleeves are being sewn. I've sewn one of the cuffs, and the next step will probably be the other one, and I've sewn, but not pressed, the collar and small tab for the center front.
The sewing silk is going through the fabric very smoothly, I love working with it and I don't regret not doing the straight seams by machine at all.
The front is done, button placket and gathering, and it has been attached to the yoke.
The back has also been attached to the yoke (straight seams), and I'm attaching the gathered part.
The basic body of the sleeves have been sewn, but I still have to attach the cuffs (which are already sewed and pressed) and the reinforcement patches (I must remember the reinforcement patches.)
The fabric is fraying a bit, which isn't great while working on it, but is not going to be a problem in the finished garment, since every raw edge is nicely finished.
The sleeves are done, ready to be gathered and inserted in the body.
The collar has been attached, but not hemstitched on the inside.
Currently sewing the side seams, and then I'll be able to try the shirt on!
I'm definitely not going to wear this for Christmas (it wouldn't be practical for a number of reasons, even if it was ready), but maybe the New Year sounds reasonable!
I've added the gathering thread in the sleeves, but then it got too late to attach them without risking a disaster, so I almost finished hemming the back instead.

@david There's a handful of feral squirrels in Adelaide - escapees either from the Zoo or from someone's questionable choice of pets, depending on who you ask. (Or, well, there were some circa 2015, they might be gone by now.) Last seen around the archery training club and university, but I'm sure they move with the weather.
This morning I took a break to visit the Risorgimento museum in Milan (and spent something like 15 minutes in the small room dedicated to Garibaldi :D ), but still both sleeve seams have been felled!

The plans for the evening (meeting people online) have changed, so there is a decent chance that the dress code will be “evening dress, i.e. pajamas”, but wearing the new shirt on New Year's Day looks feasible.
Also, there is still a bit of thread on the spool, probably enough for the patches.

I still have to cut and sew at least one detachable collar, but that will happen later, now I think I'll move on to the jacket project and ideally the Augusta Stays.

I've decided I need to do something vaguely useful with a few microcontroller boards I have, use some of the simple ESP8266 ones to collect temperature and humidity data from various rooms of the house to a MQTT server, collect that data in a RRD and show the current values on an epaper panel together with the current time and weather forecast.
Current status is:
* the MQTT server at home is no longer working (uops, that's why I wasn't receiving other unrelated notifications. I believe I know what the reason is, and how to solve it, but not today. I have mosquitto installed also on the laptop and that one is working) * the python library I wanted to use to read data from MQTT is broken in debian testing (bug opened at the end of november) * I can't find the ESP8266 boards. I know that they are around here somewhere, but WHERE???
on the plus side, I now have a not exactly adequate ESP32 board (ESP32-CAM from @Olimex, the -CAM bit is the reason why it isn't the right board for this :D ) that is currently going into deep sleep, waking up every almost-5 minutes and sending a message over MQTT that tells me that there are 18°C (hardcoded :D ).
I wonder if I should change it to 20°C to make it feel warmer :D
or rather, tomorrow I'll try to attach a DHT22 and fill in realistic values :D
hopefully the same #arduino code will work on the ESP8266 boards when I'll find them.

* the DHT22 has been in a drawer for years: I don't think I would have put it back in the drawer if it had been burned, but who knows * as I said, I'm powering it through an unholy ratnest of jumper cables. it should provide 5V, but an earlier attempt at powering it at 3.3V with a bit less of a ratnest only provided 2.something V, and with the 5V I didn't have room to actually measure it without breaking the ratnest and disconnecting everything (yes, I tried).
This is caused by the way the board I'm using is being powered (through the programmer, on the single available 5V pin), and since I'm not planning to use this specific board anyway I've decided it's not worth spending any more time. * I'm using the library from Adafruit, it was their documentation that recommended¹ trying things with an arduino uno first, as on some boards it didn't work (but it didn't have a list of working boards, or at least it wasn't directly linked).
¹ following recommendations? from the documentation? NEVER :D the documentation is only skimmed to find the syntax to use :D
Last week we might have received a few ESP32-C3-DevKit-Lipo, yesterday I promptly managed to semi-brick one of them while programming them via arduino.
To avoid that semibricking, the right board to use is ESP32C3 Dev Module, AND you need to enable USB CDC On Boot
And to avoid panicking, bringing GPIO9 to GND will set the board into bootloader mode :D
Then, with the board nicely sitting on a breadboard, a stable 3.3V and no ratnest of jumper cables I've seen that the code I wrote last week works: the board turns on, connects and sends the temperature and humidity data from the DHT22 on mqtt, sets a timer and goes into deep sleep.
As long as you don't use Serial.flush(); before going into deep sleep, otherwise it will hang on it until it *gets* a serial, or something, and it will not have a serial while running on battery (uooops).
(yes, the DHT22 seems to be working fine on 3.3V, probably as long as it's close enough to the board that the voltage isn't dropping. and I'm not going to have 5V while on battery, so 3.3V it is)
The Bag of Random Sensors that had the DHT22 also gifted me with 3 (THREE!) BMP280 (temperature and atmospheric pressure, I2C or SPI).
While playing with them I've learned:
* The #esp32c3 can use #i2c on any pin; the default I believe is 8 and 9, but they are also used while programming, so meh * You can change the i2c pins in #arduino by calling Wire.setPins(I2C_SDA, I2C_SCL); before any Wire.begin(); * There is an example sketch called Wire -> WireScan which scans for i2c devices (you will have to change it to use the pins you want to use with a call to Wire.setPins) which is a godsend.
for some reason, however, right now arduino isn't compiling the sketch twice in a row (with the error “panic: runtime error: index out of range [9] with length 9”).
But I'll look into it probably during the Christmas holidays, for today I'm ok with this.
The whole ESP32 family can do hardware I2C on most of their bidirectional GPIO pins. I2C is a relatively simple protocol that can be simulated in software on any GPIO pin on any MCU (FYI):

@bookandswordblog From what I see in museums (like the V&A), it is mainly the smaller size clothes that survive to this day because the bigger sizes were reworked for smaller people and/or in newer designs. The Costume collection at Worthing Museum has a 1900 dress that I saw there in person (sort of study day) where the neckline/front was reworked at least twice to newer designs.

Interesting idea. My son loves geocaching (and it’s one of the few causes you get a teenager to go for a walk), but the whole scene seems commercialized/centralized on one app/platform. An alternative would be nice.
@fiee I’m an avid Geocacher, and this is a cool idea. But, of all the various apps I use, geocaching seems probably the least money driven organization I use. It’s probably the subscription that gives me the most value per dollar.

Maybe account holders on your new system could create a "travel bug" by pinning a comment that has a name, a pic, link to the TB page on geocaching.com, and where they want the traveller to go. Then anyone could reply to those pinned comments to form threaded discussions, post pics and videos, give status updates, etc. You'd want to mark the physical object somehow with maybe a QR code linking to the Mastodon URL for the pinned post?
@paulio marking is the tricky part, you'd ideally want to only immediate object holders to be able to post (via the encoded QR or similar) but it's a balance of how complex we want to have this be and whether ir not complexity would deter people altogether. Another thing a TB or an object would need to be big and secure enough to have the QR and for it to persist over time
honestly I haven't looked at the ActivityPub protocol either. Maybe studying how PixelFed does it - since over there a photo is an object, that could be like a TB.

I see what you mean, that's a challenging goal. The qr code on the TB would need to maybe have a param in the URL with a unique value, that authorizes the user to add entries to the holder-log. Nobody else can add to that particular log/thread except maybe the owner (creator).
I think it's a great idea. Pathtags are an example of trackables not related to geocaching.com. You could make yours work either way, as a whole new thing, or tied to travel bugs. I wonder if geocaching's API let's you read TB data too, to integrate into your db.
Users are limited to 500 trackable discoveries per 24 hours per API license (500 discovered logs per user/license combination). If a user has surpassed the limit, the API will return a 403 (Forbidden) response.

They are based on a menswear block, so for people who need more fullness in the front than in the back; one day I will also draft the same pattern based on a womanswear block, but right now I don't need jeans-like trousers in non-denim and I don't have a source for decent denim, so don't hold your breath for it :)
I'm not sure how easy valentina is to use (even if just to enter the measurements and print out an existing pattern), and I'm not proficient enough to write a guide myself :(
And if you have any doubts on the instructions part feel free to ask! That part I take full responsibility for :)
Status update on the flannel shirt: all of the main pieces have been assembled, two buttonholes out of five have been done. I still have to fell the seams on the sleeves and the sides, and hemstitch the hems. And then I must not forget the reinforcement patches at the sides and sleeves. The one I've almost forgotten about about every time I think on what's still to do on the shirt :D
Being able to wear it this weekend is starting to sound feasible, unless something unexpected happens.
Also, probably yesterday / this week wasn't a great day to make buckram in the coldest room of the house: it's still not completely dry after more than a day.
I'm quite confident that tomorrow it will be dry enough for a second layer. I hope :D
I have a problem: the tutorial¹ I'm following says to leave the thing in a warm place until it's dry enough that the cat will sleep on it, but I currently don't have a cat.
pliz help: what should I do? wrong answers only :D

Come l'altra volta, partecipando si autorizza la registrazione della call, a partire dalle 21:00 e la sua eventuale pubblicazione.
