what if we made a greeting card - a single card - travel the world

idea: every person is given the next recipient in the chain. when they receive the card, they sign it, put it in a new envelope, and send out again to their next recipient

if it gets too beat up, the current holder picks a new card. when it reaches the end of the chain, the last recipient sends it back to the first, who takes a picture to share with all participants.

and then, if we want to, we scramble the list (drop anyone who wants to be dropped, add anyone who wants to be added) and start again with a new card

ya I know I'm starting multiple projects but I'm pretty sure this should be very very very light touch
in reply to lee

I do think if this scales (and it has a far better chance of scaling than the #stationeryExchange) we might do multiple rings, but that's still fairly low touch
in reply to lee

oh oh maybe but my adhd kills my ability to mail things! i dont want to be a weak link in the chain
in reply to lee

ayyyyy

I mean re scaling - theoretically any group of people could do it, right, if they had each other's details to share addresses with the next person (a la postcrossing?) and troubleshoot?

in reply to verity, in a pantry near you

yup! I figure it's easier and a bit safer if one person manages all the addresses though, as that's not sharing your address with the whole circle
in reply to lee

agree - minimum requirement is the next person in the chain
in reply to lee

Can we do a lottery to pick who will be the ultimate recipient, who will be the person being greeted by the said card? 😆
in reply to lee

No I mean the *final* recipient, not the *next* recipient, and this is as opposed to the card stopping whenever it gets too beat up (which is unpredictable). But I’m happy with both!
in reply to Agnes

@agnes yes, the final recipient is also randomly chosen, the whole list will be random unless there are mailing limitations I have to work with
in reply to lee

@agnes (and if so, the only edits to the random list will be for mailing restriction reasons)
in reply to lee

@agnes (also i won't let myself be the start/end of the circle, someone else should be!)
in reply to lee

@lee @Agnes (do you already know about postcrossing.com/postal-monito… ? it only tracks the ability to send postcards (which afaik also covers the ability to send letters, at least for most parts of the world) rather than packages, but it should be what's needed here
in reply to Elena ``of Valhalla''

@valhalla @agnes I knew about postcrossing from a distance but not this specifically!!! I'll check it out in the morning 💗
in reply to lee

@lee @Agnes it's the data they use to avoid assigning people addresses they can't send to, so it should be kept pretty accurate

it doesn't say anything about routes that may be delayed (e.g. from Italy I can send mail to Russia, and eventually it usually arrives, emphasis on eventually (the last two cards I've sent to Russia are still traveling, after 61 days))

in reply to lee

how fun! I would need some peer pressure to remind me to get it back into the mail
in reply to Bomkatt

@bomkatt Reminder emails are totally doable as long as I have some idea of where in the loop it is....I will probably ask people to please kindly ping me on receipt and on sending it back out
in reply to lee

@bomkatt given reminder emails, would you be interested? should I put you on the interest list?
in reply to lee

yes, please! I see the sign up and will get myself to it

sent my info + made sure to include info about which countries i can't send to due to canada post suspending deliveries to them
in reply to lee

In the olden days, bandwidth was scarce and people would make digital copies by mailing optical media around. Setting up a chain mailing list was typical for fans of live recordings of improvisational bands and open source software distributions. With the immense capacity of SD Cards, terabytes of data would fit in a priority mail envelope.

@brothers this isn't intending to send data but just do something fun, but that's cool
