Folks who are into #sewing and #fashion

Where should an amateur with few material limitations start?

I'd love to hem jeans, build clothing from scratch. I suppose I should tag the person whose sharing originally planted these seeds, @tikaro

Recs for ideal machines or resources for patterns are all welcome! To get something to stick I like to do something small and satisfying and then aim for something bigger.

My advice about #sewing is just to start! Use whatever machine you can get your hands on: borrow, or buy one of the many refurbished machines on the market. Begin with a variety of pillow coverings and bags as you gain confidence with the equipment and materials. If there are fabric resellers nearby, pick up low-cost fabric to experiment with.
And then, there's a whole new world out there. Make whatever it is that you want to have!

I started by making handkerchiefs and kitchen towels, which is basically, hemming. Then I made a curtain. I spent money on books but never properly used them. I found instructions on YouTube much more useful.

Have fun and enjoy yourself!

@Ryan @John Young depending on where you live², IKEA duvet cover¹ are an excellent source for fabric that is cheap, easy to work with, often has nice prints, is usually 100% cotton (or at most rayon / lyocell) and is actually usable for things that will get worn (mostly tops, or very lightweight bottoms) and/or used.

And speaking of cotton, one think that will make the difference in the way your clothing will look is pressing all seams as you sew them: you don't need a fancy iron, but an iron is necessary. And cotton and other natural fibers (plus rayon) will work with you under the iron, synthetics will work against you, and will cause you lots of suffering.

¹ other than the very cheapest ones, that tend to be quite lightweight and transparent, and the fancy ones, that are probably good for everything listed above, but not cheap.
² some countries apparently have shops with cheap cotton. I don't live on one of those :D

I recently started sewing (again) and this is what got me going:

for patterns: try dressdeveloper.com/sewingpatte…
they are free and she is also on Mastodon and YouTube.

My machine is a simple >10y old W6 w6-wertarbeit.de/collections/n…

For clothes I found a simple skirt is good for starters.

Don't bother gluing PDF patterns together, try to find a plotting service (I have a local one that is 1EUR/page and has 24h shipping)

We have a local fabric market where you can get VERY cheap fabric for testing patterns and learning skills. So it was easy for me to just try things and fully expecting to throw away the result when the fabric for it was like 5eur..
