19th century braiding machine making ricrac In the 1860s, rickrack (yes, it's spelled both ways), was known as waved crochet braid or waved lace braid.
@TazPoltorak the modern stuff definitely isn’t elastic, and I think the structure of the braid works by having one thread that’s going straight down the center; it doesn’t look like the zig zags go past center. So I think that one thread down the middle would stabilize the length. (I’m also thinking about how bobbin lace works because this seems like basically a very particular pattern of bobbin lace.)
