Dear lazyweb,

I remember that some time ago somebody mentioned a good (well maintained with modern extensions) #xmpp server that offered accounts for a small price (as opposed to free) and wasn't conversations.im, but I can't find which one it was.

I'm writing suggestions for new users, and I'd like to provide more than just one alternative.

#xmpp

good idea!

but, the hosted service is not really publicly available yet, right? snikket.org/hosting/

(my current target are non-technical users that aren't going to be able to run their own server)

jabberfr.org and hot-chilli.net are two other (non-Snikket) XMPP hosting providers.

That said, Snikket hosting is up and running, there are just a few final things we're working on before it's officially launched, such as the billing system and working out the pricing.

Drop an email to hosting@snikket.org if you're interested in trying it out, we're not charging anything during this beta period.

xmpp.org has good resource links and foundational information/ . xmpp.org/getting-started/ has links to open-server lists.

You might also want to mention how gateway accounts can extend a user's reach. Gateways give proxy connections through IRC, matrix, email and a huge number of other network communications, right through a person's everyday client. xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0100.x…

For example, the jmp.chat gateway. Once a person has an account on some server and a client application, then jmp.chat/ gives xmpp phone numbers with standard telephony network connections for a small fee after a free demo period. They are a gateway for voicemail, texts, SIP and other media through xmpp, and committed to the GPL.

For more technically inclined readers, xmpp.org/about/myths.html compares benefits of xmpp with other communication standards protocols.

Thanks everybody!

I've sent what I was writing, it went badly for reasons mostly unrelated to xmpp itself, but this time I'm going to save all those links in a place where I'm going to find them again the next time I need them.
