Possibly *the* most important phrase I've learned in Italian to date.

unless you want to buy bread or savory baked goods (or a limited choice of sweet baked goods): then you probably need a panetteria instead.

A panetteria will not have tables to eat what you've bought, and will not serve you coffee, however, while most pasticcerie will (unless they are β€œlaboratorio di pasticceria”.

Ah, then that is definitely more important, because usually I would want to buy sweet baked goods (like in a patisserie here, although generally "bakeries" sell both bread, savoury treats, and sweet treats here). Both mostly don't have to have tables, but often have one or two.

I've seen both pasticcerie and panetterie sell croissants, and some panetterie also sell cakes, but they tend to be simpler than the ones you can find at a pasticceria.

In case you are stranded in Italy outside meal times, I'd recommend trying both :D
