I’m pretty happy with this! The BadgeMaster actually tore right off (I’ll wet it for the final shoes)

My scrapbooking punch worked great on the shoelace eyelets, too

But…

Yes. Many people do not have a dedicated craft area for machines. @inarticulatequilter

I know! But once you have the expensive toy, trying out new stuff just spreads the cost around

I will say this is one of the simplest machines I’ve ever owned. The actual working mechanism takes up 1/8th the outer case. When I spent big $$$ on it I was really disappointed. But it’s a workhorse! I’ve even dropped it once and it still stitches out well. If you do decide to take machine embroidery up it can be worth it

I have a dedicated spot for a knitting machine, but the sewing machine shares a table with many other crafts.

We want lots of the same things! Though I have neither a basement nor a back yard, and I want both of those things. And a workshop space. And a winning lottery ticket.
in reply to ink and yarn

Hah, I have a basement and dedicated studio, but would LOVE a home gym (and friends to work out with). I'm also in need of a quieter back yard, but I can't complain too much about that.

A garage? That sounds heavenly on the one hand. I don't need more space to clutter though.

in reply to Granny Art (Shrimp) (Joni)

Oooh I would like a garage adjacent to the house/flat that would have power, then the garage would be a cool workshop with custom workbenches and all the tools/toys 😍

(My garage is in a row of garages far from the flat. I'm lucky to even have a garage, I know. But I can't have a lathe in there because there's no power 🤣 )

in reply to Blue 💙

We have a bunch of cool tools in the garage (not a lathe, though) but we have to take the cars out to use them! That's why I want workshop space. Ideally, *detached* workshop space so that the noise of the tools doesn't shake the house...
in reply to Blue 💙

A whole makerspace, with a much smaller living area grafted onto the back!
in reply to ink and yarn

What I really want is a space that's garage in front and workshop in the back. Like a makerspace mullet.
in reply to ink and yarn

@emery @artcollisions @bomkatt Yeah we don't need a big living area, it would only be more stuff to clean / tidy / do housework / maintain. We need a 90% makerspace, 10% living space ratio I reckon.
in reply to The Other Brook

@theotherbrook @emery @blue @artcollisions none of this is too much to ask for - may all our creative space dreams come true

But, back to the practical (sorry to be a buzzkill) - @bomkatt, if you do decide you want a sewing machine for a shared work desk, don't forget to mention that when you go to buy. I love my Janome, but moving it on the regular would get old fast because it's crazy heavy! Hopefully they can steer you to a lighter machine, maybe one that's a good traveler?

in reply to InarticulateQuilter

@bomkatt I had two Janome's and loved them both! Bomkatt can incorporate the heavy sewing machine into her workouts :D

@bomkatt @theotherbrook @blue @artcollisions My "problem" is that I want to be able to craft wherever I am, so I have art supplies scattered throughout the house. I couldn't segregate them all into a dedicated craft space; they'd just migrate right back out again!

@bomkatt
I find that a corner where I can set up a machine is adequate for the most part but I also do 90% of my sewing in public spaces including the library, the university, every sewing/quilting shop in town, and an out-of-town sewing/quilting club.
It's just super cool to be able to make and then use one's own garments. And I especially love the hobby since I discovered thrifted fabrics!

@bomkatt oooh, nice. Me too. What'd you do? I did one at 225 and then one at 227!

@bomkatt What a long thread. I have read it all and am marvelling about it all. All I would say is for me machine sewing takes a lot more space than just the room for the machine. There’s always ’stuff’.

@bomkatt
The #makerspace and other public spaces really reduce my distractibility, I've found!

in reply to ink and yarn

@emery OOoooo I would be the opposite. I would have a papercrafts bench (with shelves above for all the relevant stuffs), a yarns bench (ditto storage), a woodworking area with modular benches ON WHEELS, etc etc
Then I can pick up and put down various projects as the fancy takes me without having to put anything away to clear the space for something else. A constant smorgasboard (I just realised I do NOT know how to spell that) of options, and none of them competing for dining table space!!
in reply to Blue 💙

@blue Well, the thing is... I have the watercolours set up in the dining room. There's a spinning wheel in the living room and another in my office. There is knitting *everywhere*. And then the woodworking stuff is in the garage...
in reply to Blue 💙

@blue You never know when you might need to just sit somewhere and knit for a bit!

@bomkatt @blue I'm currently working on a cabled sock (not terribly complex, but I can't talk - or listen - while cabling), swatching for a pair of flip-top mittens for my mom (can knit during meetings if I'm not on camera), and ignoring a pair of pants that need to be ripped back several inches and re-knit (ugh). I may also have a project in the living room so that I can keep my hands busy while we're watching tv - this will also be the project that I work on in the car.

Right now I actually don't have a living room/traveling project, but since we have a six-hour drive each way to visit my inlaws for Christmas, I will certainly be starting one.

in reply to ink and yarn

@ink and yarn @Granny Art (Shrimp) (Joni) @InarticulateQuilter @Bomkatt I'd just say:

“fabbrichetta con la villetta del padrone”

(tiny factory / big workshop with the owner's house)

it's a type of building that sometimes can be found for sale in this area, usually built before the 1980s, often with the production facility at ground level and the house above it.

Some are still in use, even if they are in a mostly residential area.

Sadly they tend to be on big enough plots, expensive enough areas (and bad enough conditions) that they get bought only to be dismantled to build small flats.

But they'd be great to setup a big crafting space :D

@Bomkatt @InarticulateQuilter it depends on whether you need an excuse to avoid buying a sewing machine because you're not ready for other reasons, that's a pretty valid excuse :)

otherwise, many entry level sewing machines are lightweight enough that moving them in and out of a cupboard isn't a big deal
