Me, after doing the calculations for a petticoat I'm not planning to make any time soon, just to soothe my whirring brain, coming to the conclusion it would only take 3,6 metres of fabric with these numbers: Hmm, I suppose I could add more ruffle

My voice of reason: NO, absolutely not! You're going to have to gather all of that and then iron it several times a year, you LOON

Can I climb on your other shoulder and talk you into it?

@Sini Tuulia Good thing we're not living close, or I could lend you my gathering foot to encourage you :D

(ironing? that's LONG TERM planning, we (I) are not good at long term planning!)

@valhalla I was eyeing the ruffling foot that goes with my machine, but it looked like it would ruffle things as it wills and not to the exact length I would want, so draw-cord time it is...
But I *did* order a narrow hem foot and I hope it works!

@Sini Tuulia if we're both talking about the contraption thing with gears, with a lot of patience and a few tests it can be setup to ruffle things to an approximate desired lenght, but yeah, it's hard to be really accurate.

@valhalla The Husqvarna Viking ruffler foot looks like this! It's a bizarre looking little thing, but apparently it works, if you're prepared to discard some ruffle because you need extra to have enough etc.

We'll see how the rolled hem foot goes! I've been happily ironing a hem turn into countless metres of fabric for a decade, but I would be willing to not. 😂

@Sini Tuulia no, I was thinking this kind:

detail of a sewing machine; in front and to the side of where a regular foot would be there are levers and gears and screws; rather than being designed to kill somebody they are making regular pleats on a piece of fabric.

picture from thesewingdirectory.co.uk/how-t… (first searx result), which has more pictures.

What this is making are really pleats, but it can be setup to make short pleats every stitch for a more gathered-like look.

@valhalla I don't know but I have the feeling a *pleating* foot should be called a pleating foot. 😂 The one available for my machine does gathering, not pleats. Pleating I tend to do with threads, so I can measure every single pleat so I can fit a specific amount of fabric onto a very specific size waistband. Gathered ruffles have more spring so they're better for under-the-skirts petticoats and 18th century petticoats I do by hand anyway!

@Sini Tuulia Also, I really, really love the narrow hem foot!

It took me a few attempts before I started to be confident in its use, but now I couldn't live (FSVO live :) ) without.
