Anyway, I didn't say zero, I said "near zero". The intrinsic joy of getting software to work is a thing to a very niche part of the population and soon wears off to boot.
This number is not going to change. The number we can affect is the number of people who *don't mind* running a server, because that depends entirely on how demanding it is and how useful it is. And that's where Moxie is wrong, he's looking at the wrong number.
Improve userops, improve this number. Improve what running a server can offer you, improve the number again. And when ISPs charge extra for static IP and open ports the number goes down again.
However, there is a big difference between the set of people who want to run a server and the set of people who will grudgingly accept to run a server if that means having their own server :D
There are projects like the freedombox that aren't managed (as in: there isn't a person to call if something goes wrong), but try to make it as easy as possible to host things, and they run on pretty cheap hardware.
Freedombox is also available pre-installed, and while not extremely cheap it's in a range that is reasonably so for a middle-class (lol) household in the rich part of the world.
