Crazy quilt, hobo quilt, quilt as story, quilt as protest, quilt as climate mitigation upcycling action, quilt as mutual aid, quilting as community building, quilting skill share as building autonomy, quilting as stress management, quilt the future you want to see.
in reply to Michelle / The Giddy Stitcher

been thinking about it for long to time, lots of designs and project ideas on head, nit much time or spoons, tho. Someday.
in reply to Michelle / The Giddy Stitcher

Haha, I'm anti, although you do you, naturally!! I do most of my sewing around quilters and the amount of time and money that they spend on their craft is rather horrifying. Also, there is a limit to how many blankets any family requires.
in reply to Michelle / The Giddy Stitcher

Actually, I know a professional quilter who makes her own patterns, and she'll make several thousand dollars off of just one of her quilts, so she doesn't actually keep all of them for her family. If you have the right connections, you can make a pretty penny doing that. And it's not all blankets--you can make clothing, wall hangings, placemats, mug rugs, & all kinds of other things. It's pretty cool! 😄

@EllenInEdmonton

My practical side says to me that the most lovely piecework quilts aren’t that warm on cold Canadian winters but there’s always someone who wants another cozy throw or sweater.

@AlsoPaisleyCat
Sometimes, I think that "practical" is my only side! I do have stacks and stacks of scraps and plan to eventually patch myself a crazy lapquilt since I always want a warm lap and I'd like to see a bunch of my lovely fabrics more frequently.
in reply to Michelle / The Giddy Stitcher

I have a sister and sister in law who both quilt.

Not for me; don't get the cutting fabric into millions of small pieces then sewing it back together!

The thought!!!

in reply to make & grow

@Steff See as a natural hoarder I already have millions of small pieces of fabric leftovers. They just need turning into more regular shapes! 😄

I want to vicariously learn quilting and I don't want to do that much ironing irl
in reply to Finn

@finn It’s the ironing, isn’t it? If you could skip that part and still end up with something nice, then maaaayyybe. Paper crafts I guess?
@Finn
in reply to Bumble

@A_bee @finn At least you *can* iron fabric. Put a crease in the wrong place on your origami model and that's gonna be noticeable forever! 😂
in reply to Michelle / The Giddy Stitcher

@Michelle / The Giddy Stitcher yes, but only in the traditional way where you reuse scraps of fabric from other projects (and I've seen that you have already mentioned those in the thread).

Which is what I'm trying to do, except for the fact that my scraps aren't in fabric that is really suitable for quilting, aaaaargh :D

in reply to Elena ``of Valhalla''

@valhalla Thankfully a lot of mine are, but if you come up with any good uses for the rest of them please do share because the storage situation is becoming critical 😅
in reply to Michelle / The Giddy Stitcher

@Michelle / The Giddy Stitcher mostly I'm:

* stashing them indefinitely because MY PRECIOUSSSES
* using them to make accessories that match the main garment (hats, gloves, but also underwear with the knits)
* using them to repair or adapt the garment to a new body size
* using the tiny (anything less than two of my standard sewing allowances) scraps as stuffing
* have I mentioned stashing all the things?

(yeah, my storage situation isn't exactly *solved* either :D )

in reply to Michelle / The Giddy Stitcher

Do it so I can live vicariously through you 😅 I can't possibly take on another craft and I don't have a sewing machine, but dang, those quilt designs on Etsy are so tempting.
in reply to Kim

full on enabler mode
@Kim @Michelle / The Giddy Stitcher well, if you don't have a sewing machine English Paper Piecing is sewn by hand :)
in reply to Kim

@nightstitching @valhalla Yeah I'm thinking this might be a Christmas holidays thing for me, when I actually have time to breathe and focus on something new.

Will report back with results and maybe you'll find time one day too! ♥️

in reply to Kim

@nightstitching It would definitely take longer, but you can hand piece scraps into a small quilt design and use it for a mug rug, a placemat, an accent piece on a table, etc. Certain batting are also made to resist heat, so you could make potholders. Quilted Christmas ornaments are really pretty too. Not all quilted projects have to be large to be pretty and/or practical.
@Kim
in reply to Stitch26

@Stitch26 oh dear, oh dear, why would you say that 😩 I don't have enough hours in a day! (I'm definitely NOT staring wistfully at the box of English paper piecing hexagons in my craft room... 🥺)
in reply to Kim

@nightstitching But we're*supposed* to enable each other! Didn't you know that??? 😉😄

Some projects don't even require batting. And some don't require piecing anything at all. I started learning to quilt when my mom taught me to stencil. So one of my first projects was to hand quilt around a stenciled angel. Projects don't have to be large, expensive *or* complicated; you just have to enjoy what you're doing as you do it and get creative! 😄

in reply to Stitch26

@Stitch26 Indeed, the enabling is the best Hahaha in currently starting to learn bobbin lacemaking and that is lovely, but oh I wanna do all the complicated projects. They're so gorgeous!
in reply to Kim

@nightstitching @Stitch26 Me staring at the bobbin lace kit on the shelf that I was supposed to find time for back in September...

Oh no 🙈

in reply to Michelle / The Giddy Stitcher

@nightstitching See? They *talk*! And *guilt trip*! And give *dirty looks*! I hate that part...but they look so pretty once we give in and *just finish the dang-blasted things*!!! 😉😄 You *do* have my sympathy though...sometimes potential projects and WIPs can be *so abusive*! 😉😄
@Kim
in reply to Michelle / The Giddy Stitcher

you’ve already gotten so many encouraging responses, but I wanted to add one more “yes, do!” to the mix. There’s such a supportive quilting community here on Mastodon and we’ll all have your back. Can’t wait to see what you’ll create!
in reply to InarticulateQuilter

@inarticulatequilter Indeed, I love looking at the cool things you all make even if I've got no idea how it works. So this poll is basically all your fault, is what I'm saying 😂
