I don't know what I've been waiting for (divine inspiration perhaps?) but I'm just going to dive head first into this - to me - new platform and introduce myself:

Hi!

I'm Mette, and yes, that's a hard name for anyone to say outside my own country of Denmark, so don't worry, I respond to a wide variety of noises that approximate it

I write medieval historical fiction and grimdark fantasy and I'm so excited to be here šŸ‘‹ hoping to inspire and be inspired in turn

Welcome!
Medieval fiction sounds interesting. Anything published?
in reply to Jens Rohde

@svabonius thank you!
I have published 6 books in the series The Mowbray Chronicles (one is a stand alone) which center around the last of the Plantagenet kings and takes you around the medieval world
in reply to Mette Holm

Welcome! I hope you like it here.

I've heard the name Mette before, but the term grimdark was new to me. I'll go with the context though and probably get close.

My name is Monte, which is surely WAY more common than Mette, but so many people can't manage it wrap their mouth around it, despite their familiarity with Monty Python. I empathize.

@etnom thank you for the warm welcome, we with uncommon (or to some, un-pronouncable) names must unite šŸ˜

Grimdark is a sub-genre to epic fantasy where all hope is lost and the characters are more morally grey than usual - think dystopian with monsters and magic and you're close to the vibe

in reply to Mette Holm

Go'dav Mette, og velkommen til.
There are so many good people here, and I'm glad to welcome one more. 🫶

When you get around to it, you can fill in a description of your profile. You've already got a good text from this post, to insert if you want.

@kimlockhartga thank you. I've been overthinking how to say hello for so long, and in the end, just thought what the heck, write something and see how it goes šŸ˜† Turns out, it went really well

Jeg kan varmt anbefale at fĆølge #DanskerTrut hvis du sĆøger kontakt med andre dansktalende brugere.

in reply to Mette Holm

yay historical fiction! There's an active book community here. Use #Bookstodon for book posts and follow @bookstodon to see a book feed. A lot of us tag the group in book posts too. There are also lots of writers here, I think they use the tag #WritingCommunity. You can follow hashtags and posts from people with similar interests will show up in your feed and you can follow them.
in reply to Jennifer

@Jennifer thanks for the tips, I've immediately followed @bookstodon šŸ‘
And will be on the look-out for the # you mention
in reply to Mette Holm

hey there.

Welcome, welcome.

Pull a stump or whatever you find. Here's some drink. There's a platter of snacks going around, keep an eye out.

The guys at the corner, muttering by themselves are kinda weird, but sometimes they ave good jokes.

Oh, mind the cables. And, for the love of anything, do NOT poke that thing over there.

in reply to Faraiwe

@faraiwe 🤣🤣
Now I know for sure, I'm in the right place!
I'll be joining the guys in the corner šŸ˜‰ (can't help it, I wanna poke the thing...)
in reply to Mette Holm

Welcome Mette šŸ‘‹

Feel free to ask if you want help using this place šŸ™‚ There is also lots of help for new people on the website at fedi.tips (especially the "Quick Start" section at the top).

in reply to Fedi.Tips

I always recommend people follow @FediTips for lots of hints and tips on navigating the fediverse.

in reply to JuneSim63

@junesim63 thank you - I've immediately followed @FediTips
Glad someone here knows how to say my name, this bodes well for the future 😁
in reply to Emma Cox

@Emmacox thank you§ And that sounds amazing. I sometimes wonder if the two genres are too far apart for most readers so it's extra nice to meet someone who favors both šŸ¤“
in reply to Mette Holm

I don’t think they’re far apart. The historical fiction and fantasy genres are time and location based while grimdark is plot based. Romance is currently smothering most popular fantasy fiction.

My writing has a fantasy flare. I have a typical epic fantasy with a touch of grim and a strong found family plot. I’m currently querying a modern detective fantasy story and drafting a historical fiction with supernatural elements based on local folklore.

in reply to Emma Cox

@Emmacox that is an excellent point. I agree that often fantasy is inspired by history and/or folklore. The grim element covers a wide spectrum from the 'all hope is lost' to 'dystopia with banter' and whatever resides between the two.
Your current projects sound really interesting, I hope your query is successful
in reply to Mette Holm

thanks! There's a lot of folklore specific to Cornwall, but much also overlaps or feels familiar to other Celtic countries. I can understand why many feel frustrated when their cultural folklore and mythology is turned into fiction. But I feel I can write about my own.

My elements of grim are war and discrimination. And I keep things pretty real. I'm not the author you want to read if you're expecting the cute dog and the kid to survive because *gestures at what's happening in Gaza*

in reply to Mette Holm

Glad to meet another person into medieval history and novel writing. What regions are you into?
in reply to Mariam al-Masri

@mariam_al_masri_author yay, the more the merrier. England and France feature dominantly in my current books, but next year I'm inviting readers into the Kalmar Union (Norway, Sweden and Denmark under Margrethe I)
How about you?
in reply to Mette Holm

Yesss, also ohh sounds fun. I write books set in or inspired by medieval China, Central Asia and Arab nations. My current one is an intercultural romance between a Chinese general and female Egyptian merchant set in 7th century China.
in reply to Mariam al-Masri

@mariam_al_masri_author wow! That sounds like an amazing tale, I must find your books and start reading šŸ“š
in reply to Mette Holm

I haven't published yet, but I do talk about my writing process and research rabbit holes on Mastadon. Wbu? Have you published anything yet?
in reply to Mariam al-Masri

@mariam_al_masri_author I am published, I've got 6 books out in historical fiction, writing the 7th in that series as we speak - and another 8-book series in grimdark fantasy

Publishing is always daunting, especially if you go indie as I have, so feel free to ask questions if you've got any, I'll be happy to help

I'll also be happy to beta-read your story, when you get to that stage and if you're interested
