in reply to Charlie Stross

Neither USian or Canuck, but would prefer Charles III. And would prefer becoming part of the British Empire over becoming a US state.

We're up at Karl XVI in Sweden, but we never had a Karl III so he could even keep the numeral! :D

in reply to Gurre Vildskägg

@Gurre The joke is that the British Empire more or less ended in 1997 (there are a handful of tiny islands still theoretically under British rule): Canada is one of 14 independent nations that share the same monarch as mostly-absentee head-of-state. There isn't really a British Empire left that Canada *could* rejoin, swivel-eyed brexiteer bloviations notwithstanding.
in reply to Charlie Stross

At least Brian has been mostly harmless so far. Can't say the same for Andrew, and his son is suspiciously too ambitious.
in reply to random thoughts

@hittitezombie Andrew won't/can't become monarch because Chuckles already spawned: William is next in line, followed by George (who'd be George IX if he kept the name at coronation). I expect the monarchy to be abolished before that point, though: if William becomes king at same age as Chuck, it won't happen until the 2050s.
in reply to Charlie Stross

True, but Andrew doesn't have to be king to be dangerous. He's already being shielded from the law, first by his mother, now by his brother. A preditor doesn't stop being one just because they are told off firmly.
in reply to random thoughts

@hittitezombie Well yes, but that's a law enforcement matter. (Also: the Andrew/Epstein connection is about as close as the Trump/Epstein connection, but how's that prosecution going right now …?)
in reply to Charlie Stross

@hittitezombie Georges VII and VIII must have been between the fnords in my history textbooks.
in reply to Rupert V/

@rupert @hittitezombie I was getting them confused with the Edwards!

Why can't they just be like the French monarchy and all call themselves "Bob"?

in reply to Charlie Stross

this was funny to answer as an Australian, where KCIII is the head of state :)
in reply to Charlie Stross

Charles III _is_ already our (Canada's) head of state and he hasn't exactly leapt to the defence of our sovereignty. He probably shouldn't keep the job if he can't be arsed to do it.
in reply to Superilla

@Superilla He's made some photo shoots wearing Canadian full-dress military uniform—which he's legally entitled to—as a direct snub to Trump. But the monarch is supposed to be above politics: it's not "he can't be arsed", it's "he isn't allowed to". (He reputedly personally loathes Trump.)
in reply to Charlie Stross

I seem to remember the Queen doing more than coded snubs like uniform choice for a photo shoot and being rumoured to personally loathe Mr. Hitler back when a country she was the head of state of was threatened with annexation by a belligerent neighbor.

Defending the sovereignty of a country might be "politics" when it's some random other country. It's existential when it's your own. If the head of state of Canada can't defend Canadian sovereignty because it would interfere with his day job as the head of state of another country, Canada needs to find someone who can.

in reply to Superilla

@Superilla QEII did not become head of state until well after WW2 ended.

Nor has Trump done more than make horrible shouty noises—so far. So HMG is currently in diplomatic mode. I expect that'll change if Trump decides he needs a short, victorious war to distract the MAGA mob from the great depression he's unintentionally set them up for …

in reply to Charlie Stross

With that kind of choice, you probably should have included Bo (The Obama's pet dog) as an alternative choice...
:(
in reply to Charlie Stross

I miss a "random person found on the street" option as a control value.
in reply to Charlie Stross

Okay, here's a BETTER poll:

"Wo would you prefer as your head of state?"

  • Donald Trump (0%, 1 vote)
  • King Charles III (24%, 193 votes)
  • Cthulhu (62%, 485 votes)
  • COVID-19 (21%, 167 votes)
782 voters. Poll end: 8 mesi fa

in reply to Charlie Stross

Cthulu. All the way. Dark impulses incarnate, but at least theres competence and clarity of vision.
in reply to Charlie Stross

Damn I picked Charles because I mistook him for the King Charles who got beheaded.

Charles I had proper term limits.

in reply to Charlie Stross

I'd like more clarity on their respective platforms regarding ritual human sacrifice.
in reply to Charlie Stross

I'm in New Zealand King Charles III is nominally our head of state anyway (with the day today task of being a head of state delegated to the Governor-General of New Zealand Dame Cindy Kiro) and none of the alternative seam in anyway palatable (unless Cthulhu is a non sentence plush toy or covid-19 is a literal normal non sentient sample of the virus in which case I'd vote for Cthulhu at least it would be amusing)
in reply to Charlie Stross

Trump and Charles 3 are just stupid humans. COVID is just nature. Cthulhu is at least smart enough to understand it's impact and what it's doing (it just doesn't care about us)
in reply to Charlie Stross

COVID of course: intelligent people can and will inoculate themselves, while idiots won’t. Natural selection for the win!
in reply to Michael Eberl

@ebiman Thats not how vaccines work, most of the time (the first generation SARS-CoV-1 vaccines are an exception, and a dangerous one because they don't contribute to herd immunity which is how *most* vaccines work, so they confuse the public).
in reply to Charlie Stross

I know, I was just trying to joke around, as you did with your original post, right? Polio would have been a better choice.
in reply to Charlie Stross

I'll bet most of those voting for Cthulhu have no idea how to pronounce it.
in reply to Charlie Stross

If Covid were the king maybe people would stop acting like it's fake? IDK
in reply to Charlie Stross

sarcastic, Caps

in reply to Charlie Stross

COVID clearly, it's already proven to have the greatest positive impact on the environment.

Also I enjoyed the quietness. Sometimes I think we should have a one-month lockdown every year.

in reply to Charlie Stross

Or they could, y'know, go sack Washington. Again.

Maybe time for 'murica to become the newest province.

in reply to Charlie Stross

@Charlie Stross even Trump, under “every time he uses one of his powers¹ parliament revokes it and it can't be used again” would probably be much better than “we still have a 18th century absolute king, but he's not for life so we call him president”

¹ other than soft powers and the ability to keep themselves and their close relatives above the law when committing — in moderation — private crimes, I guess

of course, I'm not Canadian nor USian, and I'd rather keep our own style of head of state, thanks.

in reply to Charlie Stross

I mean, it's not like our head of state is also head of government.
in reply to Charlie Stross

I'm Canadian, and I fucking hate Charles, but better him than Trump.
in reply to Charlie Stross

my (Canadian) preference is to choose a caribou herd and declare our head of state to be whoever that herd's leader is at any given time

Admittedly that worked out very much like a "death or death by snu snu?" poll.
