'Homosexual' as mentioned in the Bible

I'm reading a VERY interesting article on Biblical scholarship, thanks to the poster 'TwistedChick' over at Dreamwidth.

Apparently, the translation of a particular word from Greek wasn't always "homosexual"; rather, it was a word referring to 'boy-molesters', hence the condemnation was properly against NON-CONSENSUAL sex.

@distel, some of the discussion is of German translations, I suspect you'll find it interesting!

thank you for the link!

grrrr.... why do heterosexists always confuse homosexuality with non consensual sex? it seems to have a long history!

Did the ancient Greek really have a concept of consensual sex? It's not like women had a significant say in their marriage, nor would slaves be able to refuse sex with their masters.

From what I remember about greek culture, I suspect that the issue was something else, maybe an excess of something (which they tended to worry about a lot), or worries about the rights of somebody who in the future would become a citizen (contrary to women and slaves).

Still, nothing related to a condemnation of modern homosexuality nor of sex between consenting, adult men.

'Homosexual' as mentioned in the Bible

interesting, it says: " In 1983 Germany didn’t have enough of a Christian population to warrant the cost of a new Bible translation"

Is he talking about east Germany, the GDR? it would be interesting.

I've found a german bible translation called "einheitsübersetzung" in a version of 1980 and it talks about men sleeping with men, which contradicts what he is saying: bibel.github.io/EUe/ot/Lev_18.…

'Homosexual' as mentioned in the Bible

this is in western germany, the catholic version. actually there are quite a lot of bible translations in germany and I'm confused by the statement that germany didn't have enough of a christian population to warrant a new one. there are also translations in german from other countries, like switzerland.

on this website bibelarchiv-vegelahn.de/ i found that the catholic version I linked to was originally published in 1974.

'Homosexual' as mentioned in the Bible

I wished that we did use a gay-friendly bible until the americans came and influenced us badly, but that is obviously not the case.

I looked up some more translations from before 1983 here: bibel.github.io/ and it's really not the case.

I don't even know what1983 translation he's talking about, the two archives I checked do not mention a translation at that time.

These are all worthy data points - thank you for having done some digging for me - since I wouldn't have been in the position to do so myself.

That said, I am wondering if, indeed, they are concentrating on one community or another in their statements regarding the translation issue. There's not so much the reality of the numbers as there would be the constructed realities of the marketers...

no problem at all - when I read the article I had too many "wait..what??" moments to not dig deeper.
