To all those users now "desperately" looking for a new home, due to the recent Debian GR outcome: As long as you stay with Linux ... you continue with AI....
So, how do you rage quit the kernel? (Possible, but way harder).
(No, I'm not happy with the result. But switching away, as a user, seems rather useless, if not entirely silly.)

starting with a browser, where the situation is already dire for a number of reasons, including but not limited to AI.

in reply to Joerg Jaspert • • •I also think AI use is largely a consequence and a symptom of the earlier shift towards a more corporate-like culture, and that problem will not go away when the AI stuff dies after subsidies stop.
This is still a hobby that I do, to an extent because it's fun, to an extent because corporate control over computing is a bad thing.
Thinking about "efficiency" in any of this is already the wrong path. The most efficient way would have been to use Windows, it is significantly cheaper than the time I spent fixing Linux bugs.

In the end that shows a very different motivation to work on Debian (or the Open Source ecosystem at large, Debian is just a small place in all this).

in reply to werdahias (tired) • • •@werdahias I can understand anyone stop contirbuting over this. I have a different view (I'm not pro-AI, entirely not) on it and do have hope for the future. I've seen too many GRs that had some split in the community and in the end it worked out in some way, I have hope here too.
Future will tell, I think.

in reply to josch • • •@josch I won't stop, but I will invest the time spent on free software mostly elsewhere. As someone who reviewed a lot of MRs on salsa and sponsored a few packages, you can immediately tell if it's slop, and it is just a waste of my time.
Very sad, when I started contributing Debian struck me as having a sane rationale; guess I was wrong.

in reply to werdahias (tired) • • •@werdahias @josch It's not "Debian has [...]", it's more "The deverlopers have [...]" and those change and adapt and navigate in an ever changing world and all that. And are also a lot of different people from all over.
Some leave, some new ones join, all the time. So values and opinions also change with time passing.
Debians structure and organization means the core values change much slower and it takes more effort to do so, but all in all it's a living thing defined by the at-the-time active set of people.
