I am, as is my custom, browsing an old catalogue, and chuckling at how utterly gay or otherwise suspect pretty much anything looks when you're a bit tired and utterly gay.
This is an illustration from a serial novel from 1903 and apparently they're talking about a man. Apparently! 😆

A lovely little illustration from an old magazine, yellowed and faint. In it two women are looking at each other in a very coy and playful fashion. A woman in a white lingerie dress, a sort of columnar and frothy affair, is standing up with her fists holding the back of her skirt, like she's attempting not to touch anything else. A woman in black, with a far less frothy but also decorated and columnar dress with a swish of a fish tail shaped train... Is bodily hanging onto the former, hand on her shoulder, smiling up at her and pointing a finger at her, in the fashion of someone playfully extracting a promise. It looks quite flirty and intimate to modern eyes. Under them the text: "What, promise to obey Kenney?"

This one is a fashion magazine but an honorary mention goes to the full page article titled "Coal tar, that wonderful substance" that goes into great detail about how many chemicals, compounds and useful products are made from it. Pretty fascinating, really. But that title. Coal tar, so wonderful!

@valhalla I did have multiple thoughts and theories as I chuckled at it! Perhaps they were planning to marry and murder a man each for their money, and were talking about the oncoming nuptials. The one on the right is already in what could be a mourning dress, so maybe she got hers done already... 🧐
