historical sewist reaction

Please don't take this as a critique of the pattern or its authors: it looks pretty well made, and historical clothing is not their job or interest, and that's perfectly fine.

However. This phrase.

“It seems Marie Antionette is continuing to affect fashion, centuries after the fact. Casual corsets have returned full swing in 2021 and we’re absolutely loving it.”

Marie Antoniette's big contribution to fashion was this:

a flowing, unstructured, comfy garment (which may have been worn on top of structured underwear, just like today we don't usually wear non-structural tops without a bra: thedreamstress.com/2018/02/wha…) which was a reaction to being expected to dress like this:

i.e. heavily structured garments meant to show a big bust / small waist / big hips ratio, or, with certain significant shape differences, what corsets are designed for.

Yessss!! I have 6 meters of cotton lawn to ostensibly make a chemise a la reine out of. There’s a great article somewhere trying to make out undergarments under the chemise (but it goes all the way up to the 1800s by which time it’s a different garment IMO)
