@Elena ``of Valhalla'' Counterfactual history is of course all just speculation, but I'm guessing FreeBSD would just have had more drivers and maybe there would have been a GNU/BSD. But maybe that's what you and @Cryptolibertarian Catgirl mean?

Not an issue of drivers per se, more that Linux played nicer with PC hardware than 386BSD since it was designed around it (used standard partitioning schemes instead of BSD disklabels for instance). Even before Linux, Coherent and SysV clones had a large market on PC and any BSD competitor in the vein of Linux would have directly poached those users alongside people who didn't quite agree with the direction of the BSDs (notable examples here would be Alexander Viro, Ted Ts'o, and Larry McVoy)
