Windows has betrayed me one too many times. I'm raising money to buy a Mac for my publishing business.

Coupon code MWL gets you 10% off at my bookstore.

So you switch from Windows to Mac in order to have a good MS Word experience ? 😂
in reply to Jona Joachim

@jaj sadly, yes.

also, to have a single OS-level switch to disable LLM while leaving the machine still bootable

@sungo

same.

otoh, have you MET my people?

@sungo

Well, that sucks. Doesn't DC have enough skyscrapers already?

@sng @sungo

you missed Inferno??? The Hell-themed Plan 9 variant???

@sungo I don’t even know what Inferno is. I’m so damned out of it any more.

@Michael Lucas :flan_set_fire: @arch-packetmancer @sungo you *could* tell people that have issues that they are reading your books wrong and that they should read them under inferno

it probably would not be a sensible business decision, but you *could*

(is there even an epub reader for inferno? I've found traces of one for OEB inferno-os.org/inferno/man/1/e… , but surely that's enough for everybody, right?)

(also, I should be doing things, not wasting time looking for software for niche operating systems!)

InDesign 2019 works very well in wine, as does Word 2016. Might be worth trying out before committing to a walled garden.
in reply to Elena ``of Valhalla''

@valhalla @sungo Now I’m pondering how much I would pay for a book that can only be read under an OS I’ll ( most likely ) never touch. It’s non zero for sure. Crap. We may have just given him an Idea. His wife is gonna murder me next time I see her.
in reply to arch-packetmancer

@sng @valhalla @sungo

I would never do that.

now, a windowed release? hold back the next Beaks epub for 60 days in favor of the inferno-only version? sure.

in reply to Michael Lucas :flan_set_fire:

@sng @valhalla @sungo

And now, I have to install inferno to be able to read that book, whatever it is. I may even send some extra money to Lucas just because.

Great job, everyone.

@arch-packetmancer @sungo @Michael Lucas :flan_set_fire: should I be grateful about the ocean between us? and never go to a BSD conference, just in case? (we all know those are dangerous places)
in reply to Parade du Grotesque 💀

@ParadeGrotesque @sng @valhalla @sungo Open Ebook Format (aka epub) is cross-platform. I'm just surprised someone bothered writing an epub reader for Inferno, a niche research OS (written by the Bell Labs crew who previously wrote Plan 9 and, before that, UNIX).

@valhalla @sungo I’m gonna need to figure out how to install Inferno, aren’t I?

@sungo @sng @ParadeGrotesque @valhalla You *do* know about the PDF that's doing that rounds and when you view it in a sufficiently compliant PDF browser it boots up a Linux kernel and gives you a terminal and userland?

Any reason Dear Abyss is only available as a combo and not EPUB-only?

Eek, $7.42 USPS book rate shipping for one paperback. Thanks, Louis DeJoy.

in reply to Rachel Rawlings

@LinuxAndYarn uh... because I screwed up?

I'll fix that this morning, check back later pls. Thanks for letting me know!

@froztbyte @cstross @sungo @sng @valhalla

Gentlemen, this is the kind of thread I am on the Fediverse for.

And now, I am on a mission to find that Linux booting PDF.

in reply to Michael Lucas :flan_set_fire:

@sng @cstross @sungo @ParadeGrotesque @valhalla
Well, as long as no one takes it as suggesting/implying a competition, everything should be fine!
Now if you'll excuse me, I need to double-check my bugout bag. No reason.
