Window shutters (if they exist at all) in the US are often non functional and decorative. But shutters are really useful!

The ones on our Airbnb in Roma were clearly regularly used - moved easily, no more dirty than I’d expect. People next door clearly opened and closed theirs each night as well.

So I was surprised when I reached out to close the ones in Firenze to block the morning light, only to discover that they were creaky, filthy, and almost no one nearby was using theirs either! 🤔

@Jonobie I guess in Firenze every flat nearby was an airbnb only used by tourists who don't have shutters at home?

@valhalla That’s my guess! I liked that in Roma it was clearly a mix of people - obviously lots of tourists but I also could see down into a living room that clearly had a family living there (lots of boxes of kid’s toys that no Airbnb would have, and too many to travel with).

@valhalla Update: This morning a number of the windows across from our building are shuttered, so maybe this building just has old and somehow particularly dirty shutters! 🤣
