Si! Is Como worth a visit in December? I was a miserable failure at finding him any interesting fabrics when I tramped around Lecco and Varenna for a day with my dad a couple of years ago. @elfkin
@D’jean Provolone @Chris 🏳️🌈🧵🧝🏼 weather-wise there is a decent likelihood of very nice sunny days that are relatively warm (~10°C) and good for a walk in town or somewhere in the nature around the town.
As for fabric shops, I guess that Milan will just have more choice. in Como there was a shop that had very nice (and very expensive) silks right in the historic town, but I've just discovered that it has closed down earlier this year when the owner retired :( There is another fabric shop in Como, but I think they have more plain fabrics.
I think that there are a few factory shops outside como, from the few silk producers left, but I've never been there and I don't know exactly where they are or if they are worth visiting.
Usually I buy my fancy fabric (shirt linen, suiting wool, silks) from a market stall, not in Como but in Varese (Monday), Luino (Wednesday, on lake Maggiore) or Ponte Tresa (Saturday, on lake Lugano, very close to the swiss border); often however I have to choose from a catalogue with samples and then the fabric is available the next week or so.
Not a shop, but in Como there is a museum devoted to the history of silk production in the area (Museo della Seta), and in Cernobbio¹ there is another museum in the 1905 house of the owners of an historical fabric producer (Museo Villa Bernasconi); I've quite enjoyed visiting both.
¹ it can be reached with a nice walk from Como, following the lake front, about one hour from one of the train stations
@valhalla Thank you so much for your suggestions! We both also harbor fantasies of cycling around Maggiore but we’re saving that adventure for slightly warmer conditions. :) @elfkin
