It seems to me that all banking infrastructure has to cope with the lowest-common-denominator of American systems which were state of the art half a century ago and haven't bothered to pay attention to the rest of the world moving on.
@Sion [main] @Sarah Brown afaik it also has to cope with state-of-the-art (back then) backends written in cobol in the 1980s with the tech limitations of the time, and nobody knows how to change anymore.
rewriting in java is in progress every time some regulatory entity orders them to bring something up to the 21th century :D

I was is an Expat in Setúbal in the early 80s. At the time you could only take about $100 out of the country.
