hi fedi! does anyone happen to know how to acquire a nice witch hat?

(i.e. people who sell them, would be willing to make them, or maybe even just instructions I can follow myself)

I desperately need a witch hat to complete my character, especially given the upcoming talks I'll be giving [sup]'[/sup]

by "nice" I mean something that I could wear daily, something that brings joy, something that's well made, looks nice up close, and will last forever. (I can find a lot of bad hats, but what's the point...)

reposts are appreciated, mrrrow,,,

@waffle I have about three quarters of the instructions for making a witch hat, with optional Bernadette Banners' style ear flaps, and I have been sitting on them instead of finishing them for months, if you are interested I can try to bring it up in the priority queue (but I'll need a few days, because I still have to find all of the pictures I had taken and add them to the instructions)

(wow. it has been sitting in the queue for 11 months. git.trueelena.org/crafts/sewin… )

do you have a specific style or material in mind? Are you more interested in paying for one that's customized, or making one? Felting is a super accessible craft to get into if you don't already know it, also a great way to detail a plain premade base. I'm not sure if there are DIY witch hat tutorials that are super easy, but I'm betting there would be. If you want help figuring out something that might work for you or want some tips (specifically on needle felting), feel free to DM me.

@secretsloth not sure about material, but I think I do have a style in mind. Ideally I want a big brim and the pointy bit should be not be straight. probably not surprisingly my biggest inspo is simz's art (I will probably have to compromise on the brim at least a bit bc big brim is hard physically).

I think I'm more interested in paying for one, rather than making it, just on the basis of "I know I'll procrastinate on this forever". but then again, if making it myself isn't too hard, that also sound appealing, I could at least try yk =)

I do know I have some fabric and fiber artists in my mufos, so maybe someone will see the boost, @inherentlee knows stuff about leatherwork and could maybe chime in about that? Unsure about hat knowledge 😅 but! I would think someone could make you a simple hat base pretty easily, the brim could likely be reinforced for stiffness. Texture is the question really when it comes to material. Leather you'll know, real leather I think would be durable enough and probably could be curved.

@inherentlee @secretsloth "Witch hat" as a soft cone and brim sounds do-able, and one you might be able to order on Etsy or otherwise, but I don't have any hatters to point you to.

My own work: 3x "Doc Pop's Checkpoint Charlie Hat" on Instructables (ear flap short bill cap with lining)

1x copy of a Swan Magic soft cap in salvaged jersey knit (ex-athletic pants)

2x flannel beret style caps from an old Simplicity kid's sailor hat pattern

plus grocery bag + tape paper versions of these to test the fit/size/assembly.

Ì found these pins but haven’t tried them myself so can’t give any personal recommendations. Etsy seems to have a range of hats but it’s a bit harder to find handmade stuff on there lately.

if crochet is an option, there are some nice patterns on Etsy. Here is a free one which I personally adore - it's not your typical witch hat but I think you can make it work:

If you don't mind paying someone a lot more than amazon, go to your local tailor or dry cleaner. I bet they'd be excited to do something besides hemlines and waistbands.

Hit up a fabric store, and ask for advice on the materials. Then provide them to the tailor. That way they're less likely to resist [people don't like doing extra work outside their job description]

most folks who want a really "economical" witch hat buy them from costume/masquerade stores. they are often made from a lightweight nylon fabric and have wired edges to hold their shape.

What I would call a "nice" witch hat, as a costumer, is a proper hat made from sturdy felt. That will hold it's shape without being wired. A stunning array of this sort of hat can be found on Etsy.

i have made a couple nice ones with a wet-felting process. it’s not something i want to take commissions for, but if you’re leaning toward DIY i am more than happy to infodump about the process in as much or as little detail as you’d like. it’s not particularly difficult or expensive but it is a bit time-consuming and physically demanding. and your first hat or two will probably come out a little bit…”rustic” aesthetically, so if “nice” means “perfect-looking” you maybe want to buy one.

I'd recommend felting, or at least working with felt-fabric to give a nice texture to the hat. Here's a tutorial for how to sew one:

And another for how to wet felt the existing felt fabric into a hat shape

artisansdazure.com has several, but there's a four month lead time and if you're in the states there might be tariffs etc to pay

I was going to suggest these:
etsy.com/ca/listing/4386398778…
(my daughter has one and it is spectacular) but then you said one to wear every day. Now all I have is Terry Pratchett's Nanny Ogg describing her hat in Witches Abroad:

"It's got willow reinforcing all the way up to the point and eighteen pockets inside. Can stop a blow with a hammer, this hat."

forgive the underside… I was in a hurry and the piece of green fabric was too small 😿 ! If I took my time with it I would have stitched much slower and had an even piece to cover the underside

If you don't get any better option, I've got this one : leonardo-carbone.com/witch-hat…

It doesn't really match your requirements, it's not a really high quality piece of clothing, but it's quite nice and comfortable (to begin with, it's actually made of wool) and, I think, a good value for price.

(The clothes from this site in general are rather cheaply made, I still occasionally shop on it because they're good enough for LARP and sometimes they do sales with really huge discounts. I recommend the hat because it is really a cut above the other stuff I bought from them.)
