"Don't know much about geography
Don't know much trigonometry
Don't know much about algebra
Don't know what a slide rule is for"

"Well, Mr Cooke, I am not sure you are entirely suitable for head of Maths. And, in fact, I am starting to wonder why you are in teaching at all."

in reply to Schroedinger

You must admit, though, that soon no-one will know what a slide rule was for...
in reply to Walter Tross

@Walter Tross @Schroedinger to be fair, even back in their heydays you didn't have much use for a slide rule to do Maths.

@Walter Tross @Schroedinger Engineers don't do Maths, they calculate

edit: while doing engineering. I'm sure that there exist some engineer somewhere who proved a theorem or ten in their spare time or something.

@valhalla
OK, I see what you mean. Maybe it's me, not being a native English speaker, who doesn't know the exact meaning of "doing maths" (or "math", in the USA)

@Walter Tross @Schroedinger I'm not a native English speaker either, so maybe it was me using as literal translation of my native language that isn't the standard English usage :)
