@sinituulia @valhalla Hi! You seem to know stuff about handsewing, maybe you can give me advice, how seam for fabric in picture should be strengthened properly? It is a stright back seam of a store-brought linen chemise that I have already unpicked to redo. I wore it mostly under corset, and this pulled out part happened somwhere around my booty. I can afford to cut some half cm away, and I know how to do seamfinishing like in Bernadette's pirate shirt, but will it be enough?

I don't have serger, and my sewing machine does only stright lines, but I can do some neat handstitching and am willing to learn more, if needed.

What you have here is a stress point, to no matter what you do to it it's going to be under strain... So what I'd do is reinforce the whole bit where the threads of the fabric have pulled towards the seam. A sort of half circle shape patch should do it, but a half diamond or triangle is a lot easier to hem. I'd try finagling the threads back towards their original spot with the help of a needle and a lot of pinching, too. And since you're already putting in a patch, you could also extend the seam allowance itself via the patch, so there's slightly more room and less stress on the spot, or it's just gonna fray again!
I'm gonna make a morning cup of tea and draw a shitty little illustration of what I'd do, a moment...

Apologies for the shakiness, it's cold so my hands don't work and Karvinen was licking me. 😆 In any case, put a patch in, redraw the fabric edge at that spot only, then straight seam (with hand or by machine) and fell the seam as per Bernadette and historical techniques by hand. The edge of the patch can be sandwiched within the seam. Any kind of thin fabric will do for the patch, if it's going under it doesn't even need to be linen as long as it's not black. (Though patching with whatever you have at hand is also historically accurate...)

Further thoughts: with a slight bow I'd say like. A centimetre or two at most, it doesn't need to be much to take strain off that specific spot, which has already lessened integrity. It will bubble a bit probably, but if the other option is the seam giving up in a hot second again otherwise, this is preferable to me at least. 🤔 And since it's going under the caboose anyway, it shouldn't be incredibly visible or noticeable unless someone is really staring, so.

Thanks! I really didn't think about the patch! I might sacrifice one of the pockets for patch material if I won't find anything else. It is not like I can access them through corset, bet the thing was originally sold as chemise-cut dress.
One addition question tho. The idea is to put a patch on one side only? Right? Not across the seam? It is a center back seam afterall...

We're not really primed to think about patches, these days! Pockets are absolutely perfect for patches, especially if you can leave one and reuse one, so you're still left with a pocket if you want it... And you can just remake the missing pocket later if you feel like it and have a suitable fabric then.

You could put the patch across the seam, too, absolutely. It's just really difficult to re-sew a frayed seam if the seam allowance is all shot, and taking it in to reach intact fabric will make the thing smaller! If you can put it back together without using a patch, and then put a patch on top (or on the underside as it happens) then that should be as durable, just a bit more fiddly than working fully in the flat. 😄 A little square tipped onto its side to make a diamond in the centre back seam might look nicer, if you can make it look intentional...

(You'd also probably want to affix it to both sides of the seam, so it's a reasonable reinforcement, because linen moves so much otherwise.)

Technically chemise is gathered and roomy enough for me to move freely, I was quite suprised that *this* happened.

Intentional butt diamond feels like a funny idea, but I don't mind my underwear to be funny. If my funny underwear repulses someone, they clearly were not deserving to look at it in the first place.

Probably something to do with the pressures and strains of sitting. I've noticed the same thing happening to the seams of long coats, and thus these days try to make sure there isn't a long centre back seam if it's a material that's even a little bit flimsy. 😄

Intentional Butt Diamond is the name of my new electro-ska band.

I will read it in more detail later in the evening, but I really laughed about Karvinen's participation 😆

@Lauma Pret 🕸️ I see that both @Sini Tuulia and Karvinen have already helped, and I don't have anything to add :)
