My mum has an 'upstairs' book for reading in bed and a 'downstairs' book for reading through the day. When I'm reading something, I can ONLY read THAT book, intensely, until I finish it.
I’m not sure whether to blame the ease of access to toots, the political climate, COVID brain fog (I’ve never got a positive test result but AFAICT that’s kind of meaningless), or small child being a lot of work, but I don’t have any kind of attention span any more.
I don't know about everyone else, but I can read many books in parallel. The secret is to never get to finishing any, an art I have honed to perfection I'm afraid.
I'm an "upstairs/downstairs" guy, too -- but I also have other books scattered around places I might just happen to randomly sit down and need something to read
@Off On One I often have an engaging book near the bed, a not so engaging book of which I can read a bit when I want to avoid going to sleep too late because I've been reading, a fiction ebook in progress on the reader for when I'm not home and a scan of a non-fiction victorian book on the phone, also for when I'm not home.
at times I can do even worse than that.
I probably don't have a downstairs book only because I don't really have a downstairs, getting to the one near the bed is pretty convenient no matter where I am in the home
one heavy book, one light book, alternate depending on mood. Right now I have a book of short stories by a local writers group as my light book and am between heavy books. I also have an audiobook on the go for when I'm on the move.
only one story at a time, regardless of genre. Non-fiction is fine, since I'll mostly just read a bit that I need at the time, but there's no way I can read separate story threads at once. This has proved quite a commitment once I started Wheel of Time...11 books in, I'm getting there!
Hah, now *that* is a question that isn't going to have a simple answer for us. One of the early signs that there might be plural shenanigans going on was that I/we maintained *exactly five* ongoing books or video games at all times.
I have been "currently reading" lord of the rings for something close to 15 years.
Also, I'm currently in the middle of two audiobooks and there's a book on Nuhn's bedtable that I'm most of the way through, but paused because it's her book and she wanted to read it too.
Also, at least 10-15 webcomics reading one newly released page at a time between several times a week and once every few months.

One day, I will have the discipline to go back to non-fiction in the daytime, fiction at night. Today is not that day.

(Don’t tell my boss.)
Maybe we just all need a nap until spring.

in reply to Trans Women Are Women • • •sometimes I will sideline books for a while because I need to read something lighter and read another book then pick up where I left
But reading during the daytime is a rare occurrence in my family so that will not happen haha

in reply to Trans Women Are Women • • •I have both of those, but also a bag book which I read at work, or on the train, or wherever I am.
When I finish the bag book the downstairs book tends to migrate to the bag, and a new one becomes the downstairs book.
