Suddenly, the printer I have in my house started to put a lot of stains in the paper. A lot of the toner seems to have dripped off the cartdriges and made a mess. I have no time to fix it today, so we rushed to the office. Here we have another printer - but it's not been used for months and, being an inkjet, it's printing in a very bad way.

I dislike printers.

due to our minimal printing needs and our constant frustration with it, we got rid of our printer in the early 2000s, doing our meager quantity of printing at the library or other outsourcing place like a FedEx/Kinko's/Staples. One of the best tech decisions I ever made when it comes to peace of mind 😆

Other than toner cartridges, doesn't disposed tonor bottle filled up?
in reply to TomAoki

@TomAoki no, it doesn't look like something like this. I've just been to a ink shop in the city center, they say the toner cartdriges is probably too old (7 years) and some of the rubber parts have become loosy. I'll try to clean and check it in the coming days. Meanwhile, we changed the ink in the office one and I'm now printing
in reply to Stefano Marinelli

Ah, 7 years could hurt rubber parts.
I've experienced flooding tonors from disposed tonor bottle as of the broken sensor, thus, my previous comment.
Another example was because someone previously replaced the bottle didn't attached new one properly, thus, leaked.
in reply to TomAoki

@TomAoki yes, exactly. I need to have a careful look at it tomorrow. Or maybe on Wednesday. Or on Thursday. Or on Friday. Or in the weekend, as it'll be a busy busy week 😔
in reply to Stefano Marinelli

@TomAoki I've dealt with this a few times, to the point of purchasing a vacuum for cleaning up toner.

There are mylar/rubber/plastic parts on a toner cartridge that get brittle with age. Even brand new old stock - so you install it and toner goes everywhere

Ask me how I know 😁😈

In HP toners it is the scraper that cleans off the toner from the roller that tends to go bad in 7-10 years. So be careful when purchasing old stock at the swap meet or on fleabay/Craigslist

Printers are definitely the most annoying thing in IT... the second most annoying thing were in my opinions VPNs but WireGuard is challenging this belief I used to hold

get a laser printer and don't look back. The biggest issue with inkjets is that you need to print regularly for them to stay healthy.

I kept buying more and more expensive injkets thinking that they would be better, but nope... they still suffer from the same issues if you're not printing at least once a week year round.

I then bought the cheapest laser printer and it's still working 12 years later.

in reply to Sheldon

@sysop408 I know. I have a good OKI Laser printer at home, but while printing it decided to leave lots of stains on the paper and it's full of toner inside - something must have gone wrong
in reply to Stefano Marinelli

Decades ago, analyzing a log, I stumbled on an IP, apparently from Telefónica in Spain, which requested strange things.

Checking the surrounding IPs I stumbled on an open LaserJet, so I printed the message "¡Cuidado! ¡Tu impresora es accesible para todos!" signing it with my e-mail.

I didn't receive replies, but the day after the printer was no more open.

Stefano Marinelli reshared this.

I had to buy a printer recently, only to print medical records because the alternative was using an online system which explicitly demands full remittance of the patient data privacy rights.

so, to protect my patient data privacy I have to cut down trees and now own a mostly plastic laser printer. IN 2025. THIS IS HAPPENING IN 2025.

in reply to Eva Winterschön

@winterschon yes, absurd. Every time our governments say "we're going to reduce paper waste", they actually increase its usage.
It's so...absurd!

I know things like these have been written a zillion times, but every voice is necessary to fight the oppression of these machines from hell
in reply to Ángel

@angel exactly. Each story is unique. And terrible. Those machines are pure evil.
