I've overcome this with remote shutter. All my selfies these days are taken with my camera connected to my phone. It's not perfect but hand held selfies are so hard.. Wish they'd work.
I'm currently discovering the intervalometer feature of magic lantern on my camera (it doesn't natively have one) to take pictures of clothing (basically selfies, but from a neutral height around the navel) so that i have time to reach the distance required by my lens and then to play around with my pose between shots.
