@π΅ Tribbick @Sylke Vicious I'm sure there will be lasting effects, but I don't think 100% WFH can be the new normal. Some employees don't even want it, and I admit there *are* benefits to meeting face to face.
It would save a ton of money in real estate costs. Esp. true in HK. Instead of 40 employees all with office space, you have reception, 2-3 meeting rooms and 2-3 generic closed offices for when people need to be in to meet clients or for w/e reason. Loo, kitchen. Much less space and cheaper. @trebach
it would also offload quite some costs on the workers (and I see companies as being willing to subside those costs for well payed workers who could afford it anyway, but not for lower paid ones).
Working from home requires decent equipment, starting from a good chair (one of the most common complaint I'm hearing from people who are new to WFH here in Italy is back pain from having to work from regular kitchen chairs).
Also, I'm afraid that a lot of people who have been sent working from home during this emergency (with the whole family home, including children and no privacy, without the ability to leave the home to relax, without time to prepare...) will see all the negative sides and almost none of the positive ones, and that may make them hate the idea do try it again.
(and I'm saying this as somebody who has been WFH exclusively for a few years, and absolutely love it)
I am happy at home and seclusion for long stretches. No bother to me - I'm comfortable being alone. But if my kids were little again, I could see that it would be difficult. It is a good point you make that ppl need to prepare their home too. I did code 2-3 days a week at home with small children for a time - you don't get a lot done frankly. Other than homeostatic needs the one thing kids need is Attention and plenty of it. @clacke @trebach
@Claes Wallin (ιεθͺ ) SE HK Indeed, very few of the problems with WFH aren't solvable (especially in the cases where going back to an office periodically is feasible); they just require being aware of them and in some case some money.
Among the people I know, my SO is quite happy with WFH, but he already had a good chair/monitor/keyboard, good lighting etc. (some of it because I needed it for my own WFH, some because we're just huge nerds who spend a lot of free time at the computer :) ) I'm not sure whether having a work-from-home consultant nearby who enforced some routine such as getting dressed in the morning helped, or if he would have known already those parts :)
@Sylke Vicious I haven't bothered to learn the details. I know I have no business being anywhere but home, office and the occasional trip to the supermarket, and now the company removed the office from the list.
Now I can use my work hours more effectively, save lunch money and also sleep two hours more. Win win win.
@Sylke Vicious Apparently several new categories of businesses and spaces were forced closed last Friday.
I was surprised before that the cinemas were still open, but now that's corrected. Actually I was surprised that they even found any point in being open. We certainly have had no intention of going there for the last two months.
