Once again I am experiencing culture shock that most Americans do not have a way to make a couple of cups of boiling water except to turn on the stove.

Edit: I hasten to add that it’s not about electric kettles not being a thing there—though don’t get a 15 A kettle or you’ll be sitting around forever—it’s that boiling a litre or so of water is a specialized thing and you have to want to do that a lot to buy a single-purpose appliance. I could make a similar remark about how most Australians don’t have a rice cooker.

And, in my experience, the most universal basic act of self soothing among Brits is setting a few cups of water to boil.

Hotels in the US will usually have a coffee machine (often a Keurig) but no kettle. Unlike Australian hotels which almost always have a kettle.

@static they almost always have a kettle, the question of whether or not it will fit under the tap to be filled up is another matter.

@mike @static The one time I've been in the US, it kept putting me off balance expecting to be able to make a drinkable cup of tea in my hotel room.

I eventually realised it's the same situation as in mainland Europe: just don't think about tea and I'll be fine 😂

We mostly don't need to boil a couple of cups of water though. :) It's not something I ever felt was missing from my life therr.
