I think I'm officially insane, but
new project started: a new backpack, completely sewn by hand,
because I have the fabric (off white coated cotton canvas), and I do have some thread suitable for sewing backpacks by machine, but it's black (and afaik they don't make it in any other colour), or I have some sturdy linen thread in the right colour, but it doesn't go in the machine.
Fabric has been cut, I'll finish this herbal tea and then I'll try to sew it and see how it will work.

perché ho la stoffa (cotone rivestito in color naturale) e ho del filo adatto per cucire gli zaini a mano, ma è nero (e mi risulta che lo facciano solo in quel colore), oppure ho del filo robusto di lino nel colore giusto, ma che non si può usare a macchina.
La stoffa è stata tagliata, finisco questa tisana provo a cucire e vedo come va.

Come misura dovrebbe andare.
Magari 1 cm in più, così ci puoi mettere una cartellina formato A3 con un minimo di gioco.

And while I have made a general plan, I am trying to avoid thinking too much about the steps past the one I'm doing and the next, for my own sanity :D

I have already cut the closure webbing ready to go at the center top, but I need to make the other shoulder strap before I can finish that top seam.

Gustavino Bevilacqua non sono sicura al 100% che in italiano si chiami così, ma è quando si fa una cucitura di due pezzi di stoffa, si apre la cucitura piatta, poi si piega uno dei due margini di cucitura sopra all'altro in modo da coprire tutti i margini vivi
a quel punto se si sta cucendo a macchina si fa una seconda cucitura dritta vicino alla piega, visibile sia dal dritto che dal rovescio, ed è la tipica cucitura dei jeans
se invece si sta cucendo a mano si fa una seconda cucitura lungo la piega usando il punto da orlo invisibile, e dal dritto praticamente non si vede
è un tipo di cucitura che rimane piatta *e* più robusta della cucitura normale stirata aperta, quindi è utile sia nella biancheria (per non avere pezzi sballonzolanti che sfregano) che nei capi da lavoro (che devono essere robusti) che in cose come gli zaini perché da anche un po' di struttura.

I'm currently felling the seams of the bottom, but I may have briefly tried the backpack on before I started doing so O:-)
now I want to add a reinforcement to the bottom, sewn to the outside so that if it gets really grubby and can't be washed it can hopefully be replaced, and then there is just hemming the top and finishing some of the straps.

Sto surgettando :) le cuciture della base, ma potrei prima aver provato ad indossare lo zaino brevemente O:-)
poi voglio aggiungere un rinforzo alla base, cucito all'esterno in modo da poterlo sperabilmente sostituire in caso diventi lercio e non si riesca a lavarlo, e poi mi manca solo l'orlo in alto e rifinire un paio di cinghie.

Unknown parent • •@Kermode usually it's considered quite important to match the strength of the thread to the strength of the fabric, and if a precise match isn't possible to have thread that is *weaker* than the fabric, so that it won't tear it (resewing when thread breaks is always easier than having to mend / patch the fabric *and* resewing it)
of course if the fabric is some kind of abrasion resistant work-clothing synthetic, I see no reason not to use fishing line (other than possibly hand health issues for the seamstress)
