That area is one of the most polluted in the World. It's due to geography, being surrounded for three sides by mountains, and to the high number of factories and small production sites in the area...

@Matthew Garrett ehi! this year the air quality in Lombardy was better than last year!

(by a tiny margin)

(ok, less bad than last year)

(to be fair, I believe it's just one of the most polluted areas of *Europe*, not the World, but yeah, geography doesn't help)
