Is the #Mastodon 500 character post length limit still meaningful in 2025?

Originally, Twitter introduced a 140 character length limit in 2006 because of the technical limitations of old school SMS texts which were used by the Twitter system back in the day.

But is there still a real technical advantage to the limit now, two decades later?

Because if not, I would certainly prefer not having to split my posts into multiple posts.

here is an open poll we can quantify some sentiment.

the 500 character limit...

  • should be lower (4%, 1 vote)
  • should stay as it is (31%, 7 votes)
  • should be higher (40%, 9 votes)
  • [no opinion] (22%, 5 votes)
22 voters. Poll end: 13 ore fa

Since it's just an instance default, it's fine as it is. Run an instance, override it.

@falcennial context missing to make this meaning as a poll. See observations made in other comments.

@randahl@mastodon.social I never did Xhitter, so I guess I don't understand the point of the character limit. Seems like it was meant to eliminate long posts, but all it does is make it difficult to address complex topics.

@Randahl Fink
The AP protocol distinguishes between notes (Mastodon) and articles (e.g. Friendica). Notes are classic short snippets. Articles are correspondingly extensive content. The display of article content should not be a problem for Mastodon either, if the project adhered to AP as a specification. In this case, a post can be truncated after 500 characters and, for example, referred to an expanded view.

Since Mastodon only supports the note type, it creates a problem for itself in an environment that is currently developing towards longer posts.

Personally, I think it's fair if Mastodon wants to stick to its dogma of microblogging. That is, after all, Mastodon's credo and promise. Especially since there are plenty of alternatives in the Fediverse that allow more characters or even offer macroblogging. The beauty of the Fediverse is that you can choose.

With this in mind: Greetings from Friendica

my favorite thing about my self-hosted #GoToSocial account (@elena) is that I set a 2500 character limit and I never have to do threads anymore...

@Randahl Fink I think on mastodon it has always been a cultural limit and not a technical one, so yeah, still meaningful.

but then, I'm writing from Friendica, and we have no limits :D
