I hope #Element and #Matrix will succeed in all the things at which #Signal is failing, starting from usability, interoperability and decentralization.

@Dashtop But is XMPP really better? A protocol that can't even carry images without base64-encoding them into an XML CDATA section?

And even ignoring the technical limitations... who's actively developing web/desktop/mobile clients these days? At this point, XMPP probably has fewer active users than Matrix and IRC.

I don't mean to troll anyone, but we should at least pick a horse that's still running in the race.

The main xmpp client under heave development I can think of are conversations.im (android, and they are doing some work in improving the general ecosystem), dino-im (desktop) and gajim; only the latter is an old client that is still going strong these days, as opposed to a young project only a few years old (8 years for conversations, 18 years for gajim :D ).

Technically the client I use is also under active development, but as a text-only one I believe it may qualify as a bit niche :D

As for active users, well, most of my friends and family are on xmpp, but I may have been involved in that choice in many cases :D
