The word “fascism” comes from “fasces,” an ancient symbol of authority in early Rome. This symbol was used in ancient Rome by lictors, who were attendants to magistrates, to signify the authority and penal power of the state
The fasces consisted of 30 rods and an axe, all tied with a red ribbon, representing the 30 tribes of Ancient Rome. Its meaning: the power over the life and death of the Roman citizens.
A "fascist" was the one who wore this command symbol. (Rhymes with Shite;-)

Something often overlooked (ignored?), but right there in plain sight: Behind the dais in the chamber of the US House of Representatives, adorning the wall on either side of the flag, are fasces. They are not small.

I thought the original meaning was 'strength through unity" ie a tied bunch being harder to break than one stick. In Irish, "Ní neart go cur le chéile".

@Patrick O'Beirne @rick murnane @Frank Sonderborg wikipedia says that meaning only started to be around during the Renaissance through an unrelated Greek fable (and was widespread when adopted by the early USA).

But yeah, before Mussolini appropriated them for fascism the range of meanings was more in a range between Rule of Law, Lawful Authority, Justice, Unity and other non-necessarily and some times very much not fascist things.

@valhalla @PatrickOBeirne Yes. It's the trouble with original meanings being usurped by new connotations. An ancient Eurasian symbol, the swastika was also appropriated in more recent times by another unsavoury group. Call me crazy, but I would think that if the House interior designers had used those as decorative symbols instead of fasces, sometime during the Reich we'd have torn them down.
